Not quite, as you could see from him tapping his foot on it, it resists flowing the more force is applied to it. You can even run across it if your feet are quick enough. Mostly the can was floating on the quicksand before he pushed it in. The issue is when you do start sinking, which is when the behavior turns against you, between the vacuum seal and the non-newtonian behavior solidifying the quicksand around you. From what I was taught when I was younger by books and TV I was expecting quicksand to be a much bigger problem in the world than it is.. Reality is often disappointing...
The only dangerous thing about quicksand is that if you mess around in it and don't know how to properly get out, you can get stuck until the tide comes and drowns you.
@Not Sure it's also because in quicksand you only sink until you displace an amount of quicksand equal to your own weight which in most cases ain't much unless your 300+ pounds
As someone born in the mid 1980’s and having grown up watching cartoons from that era, I always thought that quicksand was something that was a constant threat out in the world.
Fun fact: it’s virtually impossible to drown on quicksand, as long as you stay calm and use your upper body to pull yourself backwards by slowly doing a swimming motion instead of wiggling your legs like a maniac, you should be fine.
Get stuck in a swamp for several days, my good man. Most people nowadays, struggle to run a mile. Do you really think those swimming motions, through extremely stubborn sand, are going to keep them safe for a long time?

This phenomenon is called “liquefaction”. This loss in strength is due to the sand particles densifying, causing the pore water pressure to increase and to come to the top. That’s why the man had to continuously vibrate the soil. If not it wouldn’t do anything, except maybe settle a little, which is natural. There is an excellent book called “Soil Liquefaction During Earthquakes” by I.M Idriss and R.W. Boulanger. I highly recommend it. I graduated with my M.S.C.E. with my specialty being Geotechnical Engineering. It’s a super interesting field!
“It doesn’t even move quickly” Actually the reason it’s called quicksand is because “quick” used to be an old timey term meaning alive! Ex why mercury was called “quicksilver”. The more you know 💫
Until you get both feet stuck, then you have to wait for someone with a rope Otherwise every time you move your legs you sink down further unless you're able to pull a leg up in one motion, but it usually sinks the other leg down further
@@shimes424 best bet is to put your back on the surface of the sand and make minor movements. Making big ones will cause the body to sink further. If someone doesnt move atall, the only danger would be the sand turning hard.
I just realized that I used to play with quicksand when I was younger and I thought absolutely nothing about it; but my parents would freak out every time I started getting in it

Oh yeah?? And then what??.... He used his dying breaths to upload it to his RUclips channel?? 😅🤦🏻♂️. Unless your account name starts with C then don't comment. We already have A and B. We need the whole alphabet!!.
@Robert TL;DR most people don't drown in quicksand, they drown in the ocean-when the tide comes in, the quicksand holds them under. Wilderness first responder here, based in what I was taught in wilderness training, quicksand realistically doesn't drown people on its own. Your suspicions are correct; it is much too dense to sink in. Theoretically, you should float better in quicksand than in water. But if you do struggle, you can still sink in deeper and deeper, and while it's unlikely that you would sink deep enough to go under, if you were to get stuck in a position where your head went under, it would be a struggle to get it back out. It can also compress your chest and make it difficult to breathe. But overwhelmingly, the most dangerous thing about quicksand is simple. You get stuck in it. Full rescue teams are often required to dig people out. If I remember correctly, compressed air or additional water can sometimes be used to change the viscosity of the quicksand, because pulling alone can put a dangerous amount of tension (hundreds of kilos) on a person's limbs. In lieu of a rescue team, most people can't get out on their own. They get stuck there, exposed to the elements, hypothermia, dehydration. But what really makes quicksand lethal is a factor of where it usually forms: tidal zones. As I understand it, the vast majority of people killed by quicksand don't drown in quicksand, they drown in the ocean, when the tide comes in and they can't get free. So yeah, that's pretty terrifying, to think that you would have hours to anticipate your imminent drowning.
Remember when you were 5 and you thought quicksand was going to be a major obstacle in life?

As a child I learned to expect quick sand would be a much greater challenge than it actually turned out to be.
Doesn’t moving make sinking in quicksand faster? It behaves like a non-Newtonian fluid? I have so many questions for Google.

Quicksand is just sand and "leire" (google translate it) with moisture/water
It can definitely kill you if you got stuck and struggled
@@marthamaravilla8005 yeah, nobody said it couldn’t.
