Thank you Gary! I’m enjoying your new book! I wanted to tell you how you have helped me a lot this year as I’ve purposed to step up my gardening game as I look towards retirement years over the next decade, like my grandparents did. (Seems there’s a consistent pattern of our grandparents setting the example in gardening-I’ve got two granddaughters next door maybe I’m having an influence on ... now and in 30 or 40 years!) I follow several gardening channels here (MIGardener, Gardener Scott and Next Level Gardening, the main three, and a few other homestead gardening type vlogs) but the main thing you have helped me with is worrying less, fussing less and just getting started. I’m seeing that same pattern as I’m reading your book. Every step this year, as I’ve tried to educate myself and make decisions, while I’ve gotten great, experienced information from the other channels, it’s you that helped me just get it done, with the materials I have or can easily purchase. It was your videos that helped me stop freaking out when I joined the many panicking gardeners and ordered and bought way more seeds in December and January than I can even possibly use, even with expanding my backyard garden by 64 square feet of raised beds. Your channel told me I could safely save seeds for another year or more! (That search was how I found your channel.) When I was trying to grow my own starts from seed this year, overwhelmed with all the costs and options, it was your videos about lighting that put my mind at ease and got me started with the right inexpensive lightning and one heat mat. When I kept worrying and obsessing on getting two 8’x6’ raised beds built, really stressing over what wood to use, it was your recent video making a raised bed for your son from materials from Home Depot that finally made me stop worrying if the Weathershield wood from HD was safe, and I got it done (HD is just around the corner.). And when I was trying to figure out where to plant my 14 tomato plants I started from seed (not really wanting to use up my new raised beds space for that), it was your book that told me if I have grass and weeds growing in my yard, my soil will work! Yesterday I dug nine holes (where future raised beds will go) a couple of feet part, added some good compost and garden mix, worm castings and got 9 different tomato plants in! And today, this video put my mind at ease that my 6 pepper plants I had started and planted yesterday will be fine in one of my raised beds planted a little closer together than the package recommended. Your years of experience, expertise and doing things right are very obvious, but it’s your passion to help us get it done without fear or fuss, that really makes a difference and sets you apart. (I think that’s one of your goals!) Besides, your videos are shorter because you talk twice as fast as Gardener Scott! Lol! 😉🤣😄
Thanks so much for buying it! So glad to help with less worry. It really matters to care but not over stress and we don't have to over love the plants. Yep seeds last for years and years, some even decades. I very much appreciate the thoughtful comment. And yes I try and get to the point... to give you more time in your garden. Enjoy this year!
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Full disclosure-I got the book at our local library in Independence, Missouri, which I thought that was really cool they got it as soon as it came out! (Trying it before buying it, which I will.)

I have over 70 hot pepper plant seedlings. Getting larger now. I LOVE growing hot peppers, from seed-started in Feb as peppers take a long time. Weird thing is, I can't eat them! The hot ones. I dehydrate to make flakes/powder etc...and give to my hot pepper friends/family who love them. I just love growing them and sharing to other people. I also start lots of other veggies along with many other herbs/flowers. Being in S.E.Ontario Cda...I will very soon be able to get them outside. Hardening off at the moment. P.S. LOVE your videos!
I can eat the super hots either. I like giving them away. I understand. Good advice on peppers, hoping mine will do better this year. I used picture this and found that my humming bird vine is toxic, I have it three years didn't bloom yet but will have to move it to the edge of prperty.

I had hard time scooping all the wood chips off the top in the fall. Keep finding bits in the soil. Let’s see what happens this year to plants in the area.
If it is shredded hardwood, which this is not, I just mix it into the soil the following year. Ill just scrape this away and toss into the paths. You just have to remove most of them. I grew alot of different peppers this year. I was running out of room so I planted them even closer than you did. (6"-8" apart) They all seem to be doing well. I will keep my fingers crossed. They're starting to produce fruit now. Maybe I'll be lucky that close to each other.

I’m trying to grow a pepper that is popular in Peru but only have one or two plants ready to transplant from the very limited number of seeds I was able to acquire. I hope to save the seeds from the pepper if the planting is successful. Do I need to keep the plant(s) separate from the other peppers in the garden to keep from developing a hybrid from the seeds?
In theory yes but peppers are self pollinating so crossing is more difficult than you might thing. So you don't have to put them super far away. Hey Gary could you plant 2 in one hole like your other videos? So 24 peppers? Or that’s a bit too much and the 2 in one hole would need more than 12 inch spacing?
You could but that would be a lot. I put them closer together but maybe do 2 per hole and get 16-18 with more spacing. How do you stop ground hog from eating all your vegetables in your garden I start my seeds in side and when it was ti.e to put them out in the garden I put them out in about three days all my vegetables plant was eaten by the ground hog I have my plants in the grow bag the only thing it didn't eat was the string beans and okra
Well a solid fence or trap and release them. Ground Hogs in my area can be shot freely. I had one years ago. It wandered away finally after we kept disturbing it. When we called pest control to come get it... they said you are allowed to shoot them and they don't help with ground hogs. I've been able to find it only at Wal-Mart in the East Bay. But I've never seen the yellow organic bag anywhere. Just the standard bag. I can confirm, it's awesome stuff. You can make your own if you cannot find it. He's got plenty of videos on DIY potting mix. You do have to shop around for the ingredients though. If you order from the wrong place, you can pay 10x for peat moss or coir. It's marked up something nuts online, and even in store sometimes -- the peat or coir, not the Pro-Mix, that is.

Unless you are saving seeds for next year, there's no need to worry about this. If saving seeds just put something over flower so it doesn't cross pollinate
Not for the fruit this year. But the can for seeds planted next year. However, peppers are self pollinating so it is rare. I've noticed that you're not adding lime to prevent blossom end rot for peppers and tomatoes (2018 video) . So I gather that you're recommending just good fertilzer and proper watering to prevent blossom end rot, but no lime.

I would not place Bell Peppers that close together in a raised bed, as they do grow pretty tall and they do sprawl out a good bit, once they get around 4' tall they will start leaning over, and growing into each other.
I would rather spend $11 On 3.5 cubic ft of peat moss over $12-15 On 2 cubic feet of pro mix peat moss, because that's all pro mix is basically, is peat moss
That is good way to go if you are making your own. If you have the green and white bag of peat, it is probably a PM product too. Promix is considered high quality soil. It's too expensive for me but I wouldn't blame someone for recommending this soil if they want to help you grow healthy plants. Gary has videos on making your soil but it's cool of him showing other options.

Looks great Gary. What do you do with the wood chips once the peppers are done so as to not mix them in?
I am curious about that also.
Some in the soil is fine.

I accidentally forgot to mix in the granular fertilizer and my pepper plant is sitting on top of it.
What is my worst case outcome?
If these plants were already flowering (or tomatoes that were already flowering), would you still use fish emulsion? Or is the N too high at that stage for the plant and instead you want to encourage more flowering with more K? Thanks for all your awesome videos!

I've scrambled my pepper plant labels this year. If I plant hot and sweet peppers together, will they cross pollinate?
Unless you are saving seeds for next year, there's no need to worry about this. If saving seeds just put something over flower so it doesn't cross pollinate
^ Excellent advice.

Do you cage or stake these eventually?
Either for these. I tend to change peppers. But at the farm we use what is available as repurpose

You can. It really isn't needed though. the top 12 inches is more than enough. However you do it, just make sure you blend the native earth with the PM for about 6 inches, where they meet.

My heirlooms I've breed, maybe wiggle in 3. They get huge with very high production. I like your idea but good soil with iodine, less is more.
Nice on your heirloom creation

It looks like you planted your bell peppers fairly close. I came on here to ask if I could get away with spacing my peppers about a foot from each other?
You can for sure. I have a lot of videos on that.

Why do you wet the leaves? Here in Florida your plants would burn up.
Not in Maryland. No issues for decades. But... I water early in the morning or later in the evening. So they aren't in full sun. Plus it was in the 60's

Gary
gloves, and don't do Samurai with the knife.
So that knuckle burn with with gloves on. I was shaping some very large fabric pots by pushing soil down the sides and this happened.

Becoming corporate. Poor dude. Wont be going the pro route. I have to make my own soil and hope for the best.
Nope. Lots of products out there and people buy from bags. I have a lot of videos on making your own soil too. It is less expensive that way but some people don't like to make it. I stick by PM for those that want to buy ready to products.

Promix is considered high quality soil. It's too expensive for me but I wouldn't blame someone for recommending this soil if they want to help you grow healthy plants. Gary has videos on making your soil but it's cool of him showing other options.
I like your video, but you have too much advertising, first one at 1:00, too much is too much
They are automated. Usually the first one is a pop up. Ill check the locations. I usually look but sometimes they place them really close

That Pro Mix is very expensive
You can buy their peat bale at Home Depot for about $12 and make your own mix to save money.

Nope full size. Even grow 2 peppers in the same. planting hole at my home garden. I have been doing it for years. They will need to be supported but they will grow nicely. Ill be showing updated for sure. Lots of room down below for the roots.

So, is this part of your property? Or just a passion project you're contributing to? Is garden tourism a thing?!?!
