Finally at 1:31:00 I found proof that Bryan Hitch is the unsung designer of the Spider-Man 2002 promo art!! For TWENTY YEARS I longed for a source concerning who was the artist of those beautiful pieces of art which were everywhere, from coloring books and pencil cases to sticker albums and action figure cards, and now I finally know!!!

That little bit near the end about Watchmen being structured like a waltz and The Dark Knight a march was something I’ve never heard before. Loved the whole discussion - thank you so much for taking the time to make these!

40:35 As a creator this is very inspiring to hear. Even amazing talents like Bryan Hitch and Frank Quitely struggle with this. Also, it makes me very happy to here Millar talk about the normies.

I now know what Byran Hitch looks like. He comes off as that charming high class British person we put in our American pop culture stuff. 🤘

The She-Bat issues of She-Hulk is when I first took notice of Bryan’s art. It reminded of Alan Davis, a favorite of mine.
Then MSY-TECH WARS came along and …. OMG what a game changer!!
Hitch’s depictions the Marvel heroes horribly failing had so much more impact and emotion than the Infinity Gauntlet just a few years earlier.
Best Wishes and Thanks for All the Years of Hard Work!! You both have brought me so many others great, imaginative entertainment.

That hawkman run was great. One of the few decent things going on in msinstream comics at the time. Thanks.

I read both the JLA and the Hawkman titles done by Bryan. For all the stress in that tale about the page of Hawkman which missed the background (and no-one noticed) I have very odd explanation: It really was a clear case to the readers 'these people (writer and artist) are where they are are meant to be.' So that situation and how it came to be published was also the way it was meant to be. Sorry JLA (and sorry to Bryan's royalties) - but that Hawkman run brought fans along - it was the last proper issue to issue story-run where people would talk about runs (online)... I mean it, its the last one where people were happy and being "fans." Sadly it got way-laid by this stupid 'title wide' event (of some sort) where certain heroes went Evil for some stupid reason - that hurt the title. The other artist that eventually came on did great work as well.... And Bryan was right when he bagged DC for not promoting it enough.... Lost opportunity. So glad to hear this much chatter on Hawkman.

I think you're both right on the money when it comes to superhero movies. I'm in my mid 20s so I grew up with the ultimates and your generation of creators in general and the boom of the movies. something like the ultimates, and a lot of your generations work in the genre basically are written and drawn as movies. I think the guys that have been making the movies are sort of scared of the material or try to clown on it. I get that 20 years ago when I was a kid superhero movies were still testing the waters but now as big as they are, it's insane to me we don't just have comic writers working on the scripts and superhero artists doing the concept work and storyboarding. I just want to see the stuff I love dearly done straight. It's also always interesting to hear you UK guys talk about Superman because it seems like nobody in the US gives him any love but across the pond he gets more respect. He's my favorite hero but I'm from Kansas lol

It's a shame to hear Bryan a bit down on his JLA. It was my favorite justice league run in the 2010s. It was the first time in the entire new 52 they felt like a fucking team and somebody managed to have the whole lineup around. It's got such good character moments. I think all the time about that issue where they're sitting around in a kitchen trying to figure out wtf is happening before the bad guys bust in. Power and Glory has the most badass Superman moment in a long time when rao is rambling on and thinks Superman's trying to bust free and then it turns out he's not struggling, he's flying the ship into the moon. Throughout his run it felt like every character was given their due and moments, which is something I can't say for a lot of modern jla. The Johns run before it had a different line-up every arc it seemed and was constantly trying to be or tying into an event and it was good for what it was but I was really happy with a lot of the Hitch justice league.

1:58:00 I am very much one of those dudes who is terribly interested in the craft. I've been getting into ID'ing letterers. My obsession with craft (despite a lack of impetus to actually write or draw comics) I think nears critic level, but I am just some nerd who pours over this stuff for free

I loved this conversation but I think it is sheer LUNACY when Bryan Hitch said that Zack Snyder “clearly doesn’t like comics”. Thats insane. He loves comics. I’d say he just doesn’t like the aspects that are “hokey”, and prefers to strip away that in cases when what you’re left with would be either awe inspiring, terrifying, or otherwise captivating. I wish I could have a conversation with you guys about what I think he completely nailed with these characters, and see what you think.

Interesting to hear Mark's comments about people being able to recognise an artist/inker's work nowadays. I can't talk for the US but here in Scotland the number of people able to recognise "classic" creators is probably diminishing by the day. I could probably talk the hind legs off the proverbial asinine quadruped about classic artists and their styles and "tells" but there's damn few people who would invest the time or interest to listen so I just keep it in my head and get on with life. 2 main reasons: the decision to take US comics off the news-stands killed a vast potential UK audience imho and then the curates egg that is the Internet. Too many options these days so the knowledge database that the average collector keeps in their head about who did what is completely diluted. I could pretty much guarantee I could recognise art styles right up to the time these greats passed away but the new batch - with a few exceptions - are so generic and bland and derivative to me so I simply don't have the interest in them. Thank gawd guys like Mark and Bryan are still doing God's work.

Bryan Hitch looks like he's filled with hatred in the Bullpen Bulletins ad in Venom 222. Can you imagine an employee of the month photo like that at a coffee shop? He looks like a very unfriendly person. Marvel should stop putting photos of their employees in their books.
