we were at the game as we followed the tour around the UK as Kiwis living in London, Wigan were the super club in the UK Between 85-90 and were absolutely smashed in this game...finally an opposition that was too big ,fast & skillful...awesome team
Thats the best thing about rugby league and union fans . they admire and respect rival fans and players. I bet you the Wigan fans that day loved this game no matter who won . The legends in both teams on display . Games with this level of skill and passion are true games for the rugby purist indeed
Invariably the standard, it's truly a beautiful aspect of these two codes, such esteemed company and talent brings the best out of players and fans alike, it was an honour and privilege to have witnessed this era.
Much better style of play than post-Super League NRL. Only 5m gap, but deeper backline to compensate, and some very long passes to create space. Proper legs tackles by both sides, with a few high shots. Heaps of offloads without the wrestle. Wigan played well, but that Kangaroo side was ridiculously talented
If I recall correctly Bob won "player of the tour" as voted by the players themselves. I went to school with Bob so I took an interest in those sorts of things. Even at school he was a fantastic natural athlete in every sport he tried.
Unbelievable what they got away with back then. Steal the ball with 2 in the tackle; All over the man playing the ball; Late shots and high, and minimal padding on the uprights. Todays players would not survive.
I slowed it RIGHT down and it WAS off the hand of the Australian ..so it was a knock on BUT the freree didnt play a LOT of Wigan knock ons that were fenuine.
Yep sure was, different interpretations of obstruction or a ‘shepherd’ back then, scooting behind a decoy runner was common too. Check out Parramatta’s offensive wall in the early 80’s you’ll be mortified lol.

Graham Lowe Australia battered them in 94, they got 5 first half tries and then had a rest in the second half. Still won easily, and this was supposed to be the 'great' wigan side.
Graham Lowe garbage time points brought it closer than the game was, that game was a training run before the first test after the first 50 min for the aussies.
Oh betide me oh mighty swinging arm, The lads of red and white stripes don't mean no harm, Tis the travelling hoppers with crowns galore, It's only football says the commentary but the crowd cries more,. A little stoush, a bust up and throwing right hand, Now you know why these lads visited your land, Not to win or to lose or to draw, But to teach you english boys there's always more, We're faster and stronger and more keenly aware, That when we kangaroos are on tour, we'll take you any bloody where!
This is one-eyed Australian commentary and some one-eyed Australian comments below. The commentator is calling out some 'swinging arms' which actually aren't and Steve Roach was one of the dirtiest players on the pitch. This test series was the best and closest series in living memory though.
could never work out why Australia play these clubs, they are an australian test side, why would you put these players up against a team who just want to hurt or injure them and show how tough they are to there local fans, always bewildered me why ?
That's what proper rugby tours were about, the non-test games. Gives a chance for more fans to see games, keeps players match fit and competing for test places.
Wigan thought they were doing well at 6-0, but 34 unanswered points later...... Still, their Lions internationals definitely played better against the Kangaroos 2 weeks later at Wembley.
Why did they not have a referee on field in this game. / I NOTICED A GUY DRESSED IN BLACK .. don't know why he was there. Perhaps it might have something to do with out and out bias , corruption and disgraceful disregard for those pesky things called rules?? /
I was just wondering, how good of a game would it have been if the grubby poms turned up to play football instead of making themselves look even worse in the eyes of the sporting world, if that is even possible, to try to play on skill ? They obviously think they have No chance in a game of skill and as such resort to grubby tactics ? What a damn pity they have such a low skill set as to not let them compete in open competition !

9:20 Anyone else notice Belcher’s kick went 60m plus on the fly? It landed about 15m outside the goal line
Commentary from Graeme Hughes, David Morrow & Tony Durkin. Televised on Network Ten on Sunday October 14th 1990.
What an amazing Aussie team we had then, full of legends.
Kelvin Skerrett a flat track bully. Played like a little lamb against the Aussie props Steve Roach and Martin Bella.
Yes mate ,& yep , Blocker would have sorted him.
Skerrit must have a family of sht cnts
Skerrett would of flattened the pair of them 😂
Skerrett just flattened an Aussie with a high tackle & Roach did nothing 😂😂😂
@@franko1174 😂 I don’t think so…all the Aussies openly called him a Nancy because he was
Skerrit ; The only break he ever makes is to break the rules
Belcher ran more yards this match than most players do in a year
@J G you must be jealous of rugby league cause you keep posting on all nrl vids haha, nrl the greatest sport on earth. hehe
@J G Wow great statistics, professor
Standing close to each other at the 'toss', Hanley appears bigger than Meninga.
I think Bob Lindner was the best Aussie forward in this series.
If I recall correctly Bob won "player of the tour" as voted by the players themselves. I went to school with Bob so I took an interest in those sorts of things. Even at school he was a fantastic natural athlete in every sport he tried.
@@ivanjulian2532 ......and he was as fast as most centres.
Commentator even blaming the English balls for Meninga's woeful goal kicking!
Wigan sure were sore losers. All those deliberate high tackles in the last few minutes.
...ettingshausen throws the pass but Hanley is there to incept the pass.... I dunno what it means to INCEPT a pass because I only saw him catch it!😅
Unbelievable what they got away with back then. Steal the ball with 2 in the tackle; All over the man playing the ball; Late shots and high, and minimal padding on the uprights. Todays players would not survive.

Great game by Hancock
Were you allowed to run behind your own players in those days? Wigan were doing it so much..were you allowed to in those days?
Yep sure was, different interpretations of obstruction or a ‘shepherd’ back then, scooting behind a decoy runner was common too.

Why's the referee the littlest bloke on the field?
..... well alfie langer hasn't been on since fifteen minutes 😅
Wigan and the GB international teams from this era were full of scum bags
Awww, had a bad day hun 😢
@bobbytreetop1701 no Australia still consistently flog them, so all good
ouch. battered, a half fit gregory hanley, Australia battered them not like 86. 82 94 .
Graham Lowe Australia battered them in 94, they got 5 first half tries and then had a rest in the second half. Still won easily, and this was supposed to be the 'great' wigan side.

30 points behind so just reduced to thuggery.

At the 40:13 mark, Andy Gregory argues with the touch judge, how out of character for him ?

.... Lindner should have gotten a stint in the bin, disgraceful conduct.
Pom refs are shite. Not a single sin bin for this festival of head hunting.
Skerrit should Ferret back down into his hole-Wigan got hammered, they wee a nothing team , a disgrace to sport
The commentators were an embarassment!
Such biased commentary from the Ausie
So, pommie commentators are nuetral, lol.
Well lets just focus on facts then shall we? Australia won, by quite a margin.
