~ recommended by youtube for me, i've always admired Bowie and John Frusciante but wasn't familiar with the song either... and being intrigued by the artists, image and information about, i had to come see, listen... my god... i'm trembling i so overwhelmed by this in all it's entirety... hitting replay again and again... and again ~
It's also Maynard James Keenan on backing vocals. I think we can all agree that it's silly to subjectively compare artists. John, David, and Maynard are all great musicians in their own right with very distinctive styles. I'm just grateful they all came together and now we have this beautiful music.
Bring Me the Disco King (Danny Lohner Mix) is a song from Underworld, and is track 6 on the Underworld soundtrack. It is performed by David Bowie, with additional performances by Maynard James Keenan, Milla Jovovich, Josh Freese and John Frusciante. A small part of the song can be heard in the movie at the part where Kraven finds out Selene is going to Michael's apartment.
It's originally from "Black Tie/White Noise" released in 1993. Apparently he took egregious offense to discotheques playing his singles and the anger never left him because he didn't want associated with that whole vapid scene. He recorded 3 versions of it, could never figure out the musical arrangement for it. The 2003 version with Mike Garson playing piano was him stripping it all the way back. Apparently it was the version he felt most satisfied with and the version Lohner used for this rebuild (you can't even call it a remix, really). I'd love to hear what he thought of Danny Lohner's version. Bowie was asked for a contribution and this was the song given but I've never heard what he thinks of it. Maybe it's out there, archived somewhere in cyberspace, in an interview.

I’m so obsessed with this song. A bunch of people I love came together and really… wow. Incredible. The feelings this songs produces. Hearing Bowie’s voice tugged on my heart strings and then the guitar!!! And the backing vocals! Are you kidding me? A masterpiece
Maynard did the backing vocals for the remix on the underworld soundtrack, with Josh Freese and Mila Jovovich. The song was remixed by Danny Lohner. The original song is a bit different though.
The song is so moving and the video brought me to tears. Heartbreaking. "Soon there will be nothing left of me, nothing left to release". Those words say it all.
This song…these lyrics… smelling love in the moist wind. Don't let me know when you're opening the door. Close me in the dark until you disappear. Sure there will be nothing left of me. Nothing left to release. Dance dance dance though the fire…
I think it's about the deal he made with the devil (disco king). But hearing the tone of the music and the rest of the lyrics, he probably thinks it's a bad deal in hindsight.. but is trying to take it like a man..
the version of this song was recorded around the time when Bowie was called out for "trying too hard" - ie trying to hang out with all the 'cool cats' The recording of this song was one he was unhappy with that it went through several re-recordings over a span of 20 years, and settled with a final version, placed at the end of an album that no-one listened to
This is Bowie's songwriting entirely (words and music). This remix preceded the Reality album for 2 weeks, but was nevertheless far subsequent from the first unknown versions of this song - in the BlackTie-WhiteNoise sessions (1992) and in the Earthling sessions (1997).

You promised me the ending would be clear
You'd let me know when the time was now
Don't let me know when you're opening the door
Stab me in the dark
Let me disappear
Memories that flutter like bats out of hell
Stab you from the city spires
Life wasn't worth the balance
Or the crumbled paper it was written on
(Don't let me know we're invisible)
(Don't let me know we're invisible)
Hot-cached days that you trailed around
Cold, cold nights under chrome & glass
Let me down a river of perfulance
Set me to the streets where the good times go
(Don't let me know we're invisible)
(Don't let me know we're invisible)
We can dance, dance, dance through the fire
Dance, dance, dance through the fire
Feed me no lies
(I don't know about you)
(I don't know about you)
Breathe through the years
(I don't know about you)
(I don't know about you)
Bring me the Disco King
(I don't know about you)
(I don't know about you)
Dead or alive
Feed me no lies
(Bring me the Disco King)
(Bring me the Disco King)
(Bring me the Disco King)
(Bring me the head of the Disco King)
*Interlude*
Spin-ups with those who slept like corpses
Damp morning rays in the stiff, bad clubs
Killing time in the 70's
(Smelling of love through the moist winds)
Don't let me know when you're opening the door
Close me in the dark
Let me disappear
Soon there'll be nothing left of me
Nothing left to release
Dance, dance, dance through the fire
Dance, dance, dance through the fire
Tell me no lies
(I don't know about you)
(I don't know about you)
Breathe through the years
(I don't know about you)
(I don't know about you)
Bring me the Disco King
(I don't know about you)
(I don't know about you)
