I've always liked how Tails' perspective made Eggman sound way more menacing. That line he says during the fight, "I'll make mince meat out of you." Is genuinely terrifying and what I imagine a child would come up with when faced with danger.
@@Transparencyboo Although some of those events get into an argument on what really happened, it wouldn't be fair to only have Sonic's account be validated, as Tails' story mentioned saving Station Square from Eggman;s missile, which turned out to be true in Adventure 2, as Tails got a Chaos Emerald for such an achievement.
Something I always liked that adds to each characters perspective is their unique narration if you quit a characters story mid way through then re-enter it. When you do that you get a brief page reminding you about the most recent story event, but notably they're written from the characters perspective and sometimes contain neat perspective details you might not notice otherwise. An example: Sonic wasn't really listening to Tails talk about his upgraded plane after Emerald Coast, he just appreciated his passion for tech while zoning out, only really hearing Tails ask him to visit his workshop. These are in Adventure 2 as well, fully voice acted unlike Adventure 1, and they even tell you about events prior to what we see in game, neat stuff. (Something else just as neat is the idle chatter for each character in each stage but that's not as in depth.)
Something inherently neurodivergent about Sonic zoning out to Tails info dumping onto him, but still appreciating his passion, and listening when it’s important.
truly, the most important metatextual lesson: treat old friends like new. apprecuate every moment with them as novel and endearing, because just like you can never step in the same river twice, you can never meet the same friend twice
I'm amazed you didn't even mention the NPCs around the game that have their own little stories going on in the background. It only adds to the theme of perspective, since you could easily miss parts of their stories if you aren't paying attention or actively looking for them, while from their perspectives at most they're just confused about the story you play through (they'll just be like "woah, I saw a giant ship in the sky. I wonder what it is?" with the Egg Carrier instead of perceiving it as a threat like the main characters do).
Hehe, it's all about pacing you know. Sometimes you just have to kill your darlings to make the video more 'clean' and keep the flow going. We simply decided to specifically talk about the playable characters this time around because it made the script work a bit better for us. But it is a good point either way.
This was an incredible analysis of the uses of subjective storytelling and the role of the reader within the story that neatly places Sonic Adventure within the tradition of such Modernist masterpieces as Absalom, Absalom and Pale Fire, where it belongs
Thank you for this! I remember really liking Gamma's story over all the others and being really sad when he died. I remember it being cruel that Gamma had to die in order to free the poor bird that was in him fueling his "life".
this reminds me in the best of way writing art analysis essays in school, constructing the most obtuse yet well evidenced and argued interpretations that feel so wholly divorced from yet intrinsically part of the text. it was a joy to see you having fun with it as well!
hearing "Comfort Zone Act 1" made me do a double take LOL. I loved the video!!! I really enjoy when people make these more nuanced looks at older sonic media. it gives me inspiration to write stuff!!!!!!!!!! (also how seriously you took some of the little writing bits are funny)
We loooove doing these kind of dead pan, blink and you'll miss it jokes in the middle of sentences. It's really funny to us really, haha. Glad you liked the video so much by the way, it's really fun to hear people say that we've inspired them in some way! That always gives a real boost! Thank you
I never knew why I had this extreme fascination with SA1. I didn't have a Dreamcast, so I played this series the only way a little girl with a Gamecube was able to: SA2 -> SA1. Yet, I had known about SA1. I had played it before at a friend's house and I was always extremely enamored with it, especially because of the 6 characters. I used to think it was only because I enjoyed how many different gameplay styles there was there, and that is certainly still true. But I think, even to my non-english speaking young self, the concept of having 6 characters experience the same story differently was always incredibly fascinating, and I love how this video made me think more about it and more on why I still think it's a brilliant game. This video was an absolute joy, thank you for making it!!
Thank you so much for this video. So much of these points are thoughts that have been bouncing around in my head for years! Through what have been probably dozens of playthroughs, I knew Sonic Adventure was communicating something very meaningful and deep. It's why I kept coming back and always have felt a strange allure that I felt less so for its sequel, which (sadly, I think to its detriment) streamlined the whole multiple perspectives angle. I feel Tails' desire for self-acceptance and betterment thay comes from having Sonic as a role model. I feel Amy's desire for excitement in what's seemingly a mundane life that turns into a realization that one must give their own life meaning through actualization of one's own passions into achieving self made goals. I feel Knuckles' existential ponderings on his role in this world and the recontextualization of this same role when one is forced by circumstance to go and experience unknown and seemingly chaotic scenarios. I empathize with Gamma in his realization that the assignment of your role given to you through your upbringing may be entirely contrary to your true thoughts and feelings (can Gamma be read as trans allegory? haha probably not). I.... envy? Big's unquestionable assurance that he knows exactly his place in the world and his undying and unbetrayed faith in the friend he wants to share it with. Finally, I've opened my heart (ha ha) to the dangers of holding onto the unresolved bitterness and hatred of my past trauma and letting it color the perceptions and actions I take in the present. Thank you Sonic Adventure, and thank you for this video.
we could all learn a thing or two about ourselves, our limitations, and our humanity from sonic the hedgehog... thank y'all for talking about this funny weird game! I love it and I love this look at it. I genuinely did take everything at face value whenever I played it, and it is funny what parts of these stories do and don't line up, in retrospect also chaotix looks so funky to play, tether platformer... oh and this is in advance but thanks again for your work on the captioning, hopefully youtube is less of a pain about it soon!
Thanks! We had a lot of fun with this one, it took a bit of work and iteration to get there but I think it ended up pretty good. Also, Chaotix is really rad. People dismiss it too easily honestly. About the captioning, we really wanted to get it out in time, but like you saw on twitter RUclips had other plans. It will be priority number one once it gets through the system. Then we'll let you know :)
I'm not even halfway through and I have to say that your inflection is very impressive and the content itself is well written!! Definitely underrated creator in the making, here. 0/
Thank you! 😃 We've had a few videos for me to practice I guess, haha. Let's just say a lot of effort goes into just recording the voice overs for these videos. A LOT.
Did you know that, in the Sonic levels, you can use the second controller to control Tails? He can’t move outside the camera but, uh, maybe he can win?
I played this game a lot when I was a kid but never really thought much about it's story then. Seeing an analysis on it now is so interesting!! You did a great job on this one!
ah yes... the modern rashomon....!!! so excited for your coverage on this!!! perception... truth... only by reaching out to the tenuous threads that connect us can this be Everyone's Adventure
As a kid, noticing that the same events had different voice lines and specifics depending on the character you were playing as absolutely fascinated me, and I think was the first time I realized a video game's story could be anything more than just a straightforward portrayal of events. I'm so glad you all made this video and dove into Adventure further!
Stuff like this is what makes Sonic Adventure my favorite Sonic game. Normally when games do a “See the same story from different perspectives” thing, it might be kinda heavy-handed and gimmicky, something to put on the back of the box. This game does it so much more subtly and gracefully. The game still calls them “Stories” but most would probably just view it as a catchy name used as a vessel to just play some levels as a different character. The story isn’t even the real main focus, this is a fun platform game where you go zoom and jump around, but the story is both very solid and entertaining while also being mostly un-intrusive to the gameplay and game design. I love it and I love this video! Great work, you just earned a new subscriber!
This is probably the first time I've heard Sonic Adventure explained in a way that makes me think "I should play that" Sonic Mania is my main point of reference for the franchise, which is all but devoid of story and themes. Hearing SA described this way has really helped me appreciate this other side of the franchise though. I can see why so many people are enamored with it.
As usual we can't promise you'll love it yourself, but I think a lot of it comes down to perspective too. Sonic Adventure is a janky ass game from the late 90', it takes some getting used to. But it's just a really charming tour into the creativity that existed in the early 3D era of games. It's super interesting if nothing else :)
Play Sonic Adventure, Adventure 2, and Generations. The rest of the MODERN Sonic games suck, (not the classic ones) Yes, that includes Unleashed and Heroes
It's truly bizarre how often Sonic games will literally sing their point at you VS how long it takes for someone to come out with an analysis that actually pays attention to it and gives it the benefit of the doubt. Thank you for making this! (e.g. whenever critics point out the rashomon thing sonic adventure has going for it, they usually see it as a superficial thing that doesn't work)
It's funny, yeah. Half of the time writing this I felt a bit silly because of how blatant a lot of it is, but the fact that it's so underdiscussed kept me going.
This was such a fantastic analysis. Thank you so much!! … I will say the way Pachacamac was pronounced absolutely tickled me, if only because I don’t hear people trying to pronounce it in English. It’s a cultural heritage site and connected to our mythology so yeah, rare to hear outside our country! Thank you so much for sharing again and how much love has gone into this analysis. Sonic Adventure remains one of my favorite games of all time and y’all have just made me love it even more ❤️
You're very welcome! We've heard a lot of people do that old joke where they stumble over themselves trying to say it, and we just find that to be a bit tacky, haha. The best we can do is try after all, without exaggeration. Thank you
I also think some of the inconsistencies in Tails' story stem from the fact that he's only 8. How many of us remember those years precisely? Given his strong desire to be a hero on his own merits, it's not too surprising that he'd mistakenly remember himself as having a more active role. A fun tidbit a lot of people don't know about is that if you fall too far behind in a "race" against Sonic, he'll actually stop and wait for you to catch up. Not enough to let you win, but enough that he won't kill his little brother's confidence by blowing him out of the water--either that or he just doesn't want the kid to fall too far behind because he wants to keep an eye on him. The fact that it's not even acknowledged in Sonic's objectives just shows how natural this tendency is for him. Am I reading too much into the A.I.? Maybe, but I think it's adorable.
Y'all make videos so good that I forget how long they are. I just am like "wow, new Transparency video!" and then one to three hours of my day are gone
I actually noticed this but initially thought it was my autism playing tricks on me. In Sonic's story, Amy rushes into Twinkle Park. Sonic says, "That girl is such a pain!" But in Amy's story, same scene, but Sonic says something completely different. He says, "That girl is so weird!"
I dont think Tails is lying, is just that nobody really acknowledges him as much when he is near Sonic, the main star. Gamma was trained to focus on Sonic. They see tails as a pawn, Tails considered he fought alongside Sonic while the rest only considers Sonic.
wonderful video! I had always thought of the events in this game not as something thats happening in the moment as you play, but instead something thats being told back to you about by the individual characters, like you said as an unreliable testimony. All those little inconsistencies were great to see being talked about, but you added so much more extra depth to it, rather than just stating this and leaving it as that, you got so much additional meaning out of it that makes me appreciate the way this game's story is put together even more
Thank you! Glad you liked it! Kiki did an amazing job writing this one, just squeezing out meaning and importance out of this old classic. She's the best co-youtuber you could ever ask for
I like when people search for meaning or narratives in media even when they're in there completely by mistake. I've done it myself and felt really good There's something amazing about interpreting a story in a unique way. I loved this unique interpretation of Sonic Adventure's story, that, on its own is an inconsistent mess of translation errors and plot holes, but can be viewed as one big message.
In Sonic Adventure's case we don't necessarily think it's all unintentional, but there certainly are things that probably were, haha. It's a bit of a mish-mash. But yeah, it's fun making readings and really look at video games as pieces of art and try to mine some meaning out of them. It's delightful!
I love you. But no seriously, really well done! I've always loved the subtle differences in the story in sonic adventure, it gives the game a unique voice in terms of writing that I don't think they've delivered on anything comparable since. It's really nice to see analysis of sonic adventure that goes deeper than the "sonic adventure is actually BAD/actually GOOD" discourse that I see so frequently. Course, I'm incredibly biased. Adventure was my first sonic game after an early childhood of watching the cartoons, so it holds a special place in my heart. Admittedly I probably wouldn't have even caught on to these subtleties had I picked the game up as an adult, I just wouldn't have the patience to watch those cutscenes now. Regardless, making you question the validity of the narrator is even now something reserved for narrative and art focused experiences, so the fact that a mainstream sonic title did so near the series peak is super admirable. Subbed for sure!
Haha, hey, thanks! Glad you liked it so much! The whole discourse around this game being good or bad is basically part of the reason we wanted to make it actually, in fact that often fuels us in a way, haha. It's just nice to come with new perspectives, either by not dealing too much with value statements or simply by challenging the status quo. Kind of like Sonic Adventure really, haha. Thanks again
There's something unique in how you two approach each video, each theme... Never played Sonic Adventure before and didn't know a lot of the things you discussed (like the different scenes and perspectives) and I never thought about a game with different characters having different perspectives of the same thing AND being shown. I hope this channel continues so far because your dedication to investigate and give your own point of view amazes me.
Aw, glad you like it! We really enjoy doing this readings and interpretations of media, so I doubt we will stop anytime soon. Especially when people seem to appreciate it :)
What a delight. The thing is I regretfully don't really play videogames anymore, but your channel got me hooked on gaming essays anyway. Something about your content has become comfort food for me. It's always fun watching your refreshing perspective on titles I'm unfamiliar with. This time, however, Sonic Adventure is one of my beloved childhood series so you can imagine the smile I had on my face when I saw the notification for this video! Actually, I've recently watched a couple stuff from other RUclipsrs about this game + its sequel but none of them brought the angle that you guys did come up with. As always, I get out of your videos with a lot of things I didn't consider about a piece of art, but it also makes me want to play this game again! A future video about Sonic Adventure 2 would also make my day as it's literally one of my all time favorites.
Aw, thank you! That's really nice to hear! We always try to add some new perspectives and do our best to talk about things that people haven't really touched upon that much before. That's just how we roll, it's fun to add to the discourse basically, haha. Glad we could do that for a game that you have fond memories of! There are no plans for a Sonic Adventure 2 video at this point in time, but we won't say never. Who knows. Maybe one day we'll get back to it! :)
I’m always impressed by how you come up with the ideas for these videos let alone execute them well too, this was a really fun watch :) Also I hope that “problem” continues to get worse haha, congrats on 200 patrons!
0:29 - 0:52 Sonic Team's mindset after 2006. And unless Isuka was lying about there not being any other playable character(s) in Sonic Frontiers that doesn't look to be changing anytime soon. And that upsets me.
I understand the dilemma of course. It's hard to make big 3D games with a lot of different characters who have their own separate mechanics. But I'd love to see more of these goobers be playable in the future. Especially Amy. Her hammer jump could be an entire game on its own, haha.
I will never understand people who think Sonic Adventure is a bad game. But even despite all of its flaws, it's impossible to deny the amount of intricate interwoven details in every character's perspective of the story. They had no business making such a clever way of storytelling, yet they did. Adventure tends to get buried under the much "better" games like S3&K, SA2, Heroes, and Unleashed. So I'm glad you covered one of the most unique aspects of that game that I think even SA2 misses, as much as I love that game too.
You know, at this point it kind of doesn't matter if Sonic Adventure is good/bad. It's kind of a boring conclusion to come to in a video, because in the end, as a piece of art, Sonic Adventure is super interesting and valuable in its own right. Anyway, thank you for sharing your thoughts
Thank you for talking about why I've loved this game for so long. The way it plays with perspective and narrative always fascinated me. It feels like one of those things games can do that has rarely been attempted since.
First time watching your channel and this video was actually a blast and a delightful discovery. Keep having fun, loved the laughter, the joy is infectious.
The game also involves the player through the Chao Gardens, as the Chao are a background element that the characters never interact with in the story, yet form the foundation for Choas' motivation. It is their peaceful integration into modern society that finally convinces Chaos to rest, but only the player will see that integration through the gardens, needing to participate in a side activity outside of the character's personal lives to understand what Tikal means by the end.
1 Mistake is that you can unlock Big before Knuckles if you go back to Station Square & talk to him as Sonic or Tails after clearing Ice Cap & before fighting him. This was an interesting essay about how characters like Big & Gamma are given parts of Tikal's Past for the sole purpose of the player.
Holy shit, ' infect them with the virus of ourselves and make them playable' is the most metal way to look at player perspective i've heard and i love it.
I can barely tell where the satire and the more legitimate analysis divide… and I feel like many in the comments section missed the tongue in cheek nature of the whole thing, but the goofiness of taking all this so seriously didn’t stop you from having something genuine to say about all this. I kinda love it.
Haha, thank you! I really liked the comment. We're 100% genuine about our analysis in these videos, basically we don't say anything that we don't believe to be a legitimate reading on our part. At the same time we're very self-aware about the subject matter. You kind of have to be a bit goofy to ease people into your "deep analysis" about something like Sonic the Hedgehog I suppose, haha. The tongue in cheek stuff is just sort of a presentation we have developed over time really. It's a lot of fun to us.
completely tangential comment: gamma's story has given me thoughts about omega (from later games), recently namely, that while gamma seemed of the opinion that it was better there be a small bird who was once gamma, than there be gamma who was once a small bird, omega instead seems to be Fine With This which will probably never be "officially" explored but i absolutely love to think about just an edgy trans robot (i refuse to consider a lack of any small bird being involved in omega's core, simply because that would be so much less interesting)
i think the sad truth really is that there's no bird inside of gamma, or at the very least, he was designed with a back-up power source or upgraded to no longer need one at some point. in sonic 06, there's a point that reveals omega will at some point sit in standby for roughly 200 years before awakening to assist shadow in the future. the only other alternative i can reasonably see here is that eggman designs his machines to effectively put the animal in a cryosleep state should the robot go into standby. which imo is honestly reasonable, but i'm not confident in believing it was the original intent, sadly.
Eggman-robots in general weren't powered by animals anymore after SA2, except in Lost World and the mobile games. Even if Omega had a bird inside of him, his character has nothing to do with it anyhow. The only connection between him and what happened in Adventure is that he uses Gamma and Beta as benchmarks to surpass.(When one gets the lowest rank in Heroes, he comments on it)
@@Transparencyboo the plot was done so much better than adventure 2, shadow should’ve had clues and snippets of Maria’s true story other than a misguided flashback, saving rogue for an unspecified reason and then a turnaround from Amy rose. That felt forced.
Once again all of your opinions are objectively correct. I've been saying a very similar thing about Sonic Adventure whenever I can get someone to listen. My high school English class was not willing to accept it as an example of brilliant use of the 'unreliable narrator' device, but that's because they're philistines. I'm my own favorite Sonic character now by accident maybe. Thanks for making this.
Came to see if this was Tails slander and was ready for an argumentative comment. Instantly knew I was baited into something much better. Such a great essay.
Honestly, Sonic Adventure is one of my favorite games of all time, because I can't think of a single other video game that delves as deeply into the differences of different people's accounts and perspectives, even when they're both witnessing the same event at the same time.
this is the kind of analysis you don't find from most people on youtube. how many people would make a video about differing character perspectives framed through Sonic Adventure of all things
Heh, that's one of our goals I suppose. We always try our best to make something different that strays away from the usual on RUclips. Thank you for pointing it out! :)
This game has been my favourite game ever since I was 8! It's still a big special interest of mine. I'm so happy to see a new, long, in-depth video about it.🥳
Ngl, I'd wanna see an Sonic Adventure game literally take the idea of the story being made by the characters getting interogated to tell their experience of what happened as "witnesses"
My brain just grew five sizes. My skull is positively bursting with brain power. My head is becoming as big as Sonic's. This video is turning me into the ultimate lifeform.
I of course dont have a source but I've been told that the way the actors were just given random lines with extremely little information is just how voice acting went for japanese-developed video games of that era
36:18 Transparency: “Even though no one sees or overtly acknowledges our existence” Meanwhile Amy: “Look it’s, Sonic.” *looks into the camera* “My hero.”
i'm surprised you didn't mention my favorite little dialogue difference! It's when the heroes confront Eggman outside Tails's workshop. In Sonic's story, Eggman greets both of them with "Well, if it isn't Sonic!" In Tails's story, it's a little different: "Well, if it isn't Sonic and Tails!" From Sonic's view, Tails isn't even important enough to mention. But from Tails's view, Eggman views him as one of the heroes... second in the list, but still! It's the line that first got me thinking about this stuff way back when, so thank you for giving me a more thorough view on all of this, and for enlightening everyone else on it too. ❤
Making videos is pretty hard sometimes, you gotta kill your darlings a lot to keep a good pace basically. If we could we would add a heck ton more quotes, but there are just so many to choose from. So in the end something has to be cut, and honestly it is probably for the best. It is fun when the audience gets a chance to share their own favourites and really add to the video in a natural way. Like you did now, thank you :)
really nice video which explains why i like this game despite playing it for the first time recently and not even getting the final ending(now i need more games like this)
sonic adventure was the only sonic game i've ever played, and i remember briefly playing as tails and amy before we gave over to raising and breeding chao's. actually i think we only played as tails and amy to get materials for Chao raising. so thank you for this sharp analysis of a game i sort of played, giving me all the aspects i never thought about it.
Chao Garden is cool and Amy is a super rad playable character. Her hammer jumps and overall moveset should honestly just have been a game on its own. It's that good.
This is exactly why I always loved Sonic Adventure, and never really understood why so many did not. Ironically, the part about so many others just taking everything at face value was the biggest, most informative part from my perspective. Because somehow, despite so much of the game being commentary ABOUT how different perspectives can be about the same events, I never considered the possibility that people DIDN'T see that depth, that from their perspective the game was literally just repeating the exact same cutscenes and that they weren't simply being dismissive when saying that. I missed others' perspectives about a piece of media... about perspectives.
It can also be hard to expect that kind of thing from a younger audience that plays or has played it. Like when I was little I certainly didn't understand (at least fully) that everyone's different stories had perspective biases, for me it just seemed like jumping from one persons view to the next without issues of perspective or interpretation being different. Obviously there were big concepts that stood out like Tails' perspective litterally being Sonic's story and battles against Eggman and it being a struggle for the want to be like Sonic, but the other subtler things like dialogue differences in cutscenes, camera perspectives in them and the different speech intonations were usually above my head until I looked back later in life and thought deeper into it.
Hehe, that's a really interesting really. I like the conclusion there at the end. Glad we could inspire some thought provoking introspection I guess :)
honestly the best vid in my recommendations . this is a fantastic analysis , i enjoyed it immensely !! your voice is amazing btw it made this analysis incredibly engaging !! thank you very much for putting this together !! it's always great seeing the love for sonic adventure still going strong 💗 definitely subbing !!
this game really opened my mind as a kid it taught me Perspective like we can go throught the same levels but it be different for others maybe it open my heart? to other and how they veiw events
I am just... It's nice to see someone else find the multiple contradictory narrators in Sonic Adventure interesting. Just becuase "Tails The Fox Is An Unreliable Narrator" is the silliest sentence I've ever said, it is also true. Also jeez, this video did not feel an hour long, everything in here feels essential and good. I have no more words. I feed what I have given to the algorithm to aid you.
what an interesting video!! i haven't played sonic adventure, but i still enjoyed watching it. this is a very interesting way to read and view a game's story
One of our goals have always kind of been to be the kind of youtubers that people just watch no matter what they talk about and even if they haven't played the game we speak about. So this is really nice, haha!
Never realized that SA1 used so much unreliable narration honestly. That's surprisingly kinda arty for a 90s platformer. This game definitely had a touch of RPG influence in its presentation, with how it does character introductions, over-world, NPC's, and bigger emphasis on story. (Also classic Amy is cute)

I've always liked how Tails' perspective made Eggman sound way more menacing. That line he says during the fight, "I'll make mince meat out of you."
Is genuinely terrifying and what I imagine a child would come up with when faced with danger.
Tails has a wild imagination. As expected of a kid :)
Well, if I was eight and a grown man was planning on destroying a city, I would be thinking that guy is menacing too
It's could be debatable as side remarks aimed directly at Tails after he quips at Eggman while being serious to sonic.
That's a really good point! Thanks for adding to our little thing here. :)

Great comment, love it!
Tikal's expression at 44:51 is great. The Dreamcast was so realistic for its time.
A really cool console, gotta love it!
Sonic Adventure, a true masterpiece of our age.
Thank you for this! I remember really liking Gamma's story over all the others and being really sad when he died. I remember it being cruel that Gamma had to die in order to free the poor bird that was in him fueling his "life".
I think it's a beloved story among fans for a reason. It's a really well told narrative that puts an interesting spin on an old Sonic concept.
19:28 that offscreen laugh was incredible!
Hahah, thanks!
Love that you decided to write this. Sonic adventure is so full of latent meaning and I love it's open book qualities
Thank you! Glad you decided to watch it too! :)
this reminds me in the best of way writing art analysis essays in school, constructing the most obtuse yet well evidenced and argued interpretations that feel so wholly divorced from yet intrinsically part of the text. it was a joy to see you having fun with it as well!
They're an absolute joy to make :)
hearing "Comfort Zone Act 1" made me do a double take LOL.
Thank you
Time to grab a cold drink and a bucket of chilli dogs.
Just like Sonic would've wanted!
Thank you, glad you liked it so much! The Gamecube order is basically our experience as well, haha.
I just live for the line, "Coincidentally, the best game ever made."
We love saying it, haha. It's just delightful.
And thank YOU for sharing your thoughts
we could all learn a thing or two about ourselves, our limitations, and our humanity from sonic the hedgehog...
thank y'all for talking about this funny weird game! I love it and I love this look at it. I genuinely did take everything at face value whenever I played it, and it is funny what parts of these stories do and don't line up, in retrospect
also chaotix looks so funky to play, tether platformer...
oh and this is in advance but thanks again for your work on the captioning, hopefully youtube is less of a pain about it soon!
Haha, yeah, maybe. We'll just have to try it and make Tails' dream come true.
I played this game a lot when I was a kid but never really thought much about it's story then. Seeing an analysis on it now is so interesting!! You did a great job on this one!
Thanks! Glad you liked it! :)
ah yes... the modern rashomon....!!! so excited for your coverage on this!!! perception... truth... only by reaching out to the tenuous threads that connect us can this be Everyone's Adventure
Thank you! We're pretty excited about it too, haha :)
I sorta zoned out for a minute around 36:25 and THEN I SAW IT and nearly spat out my drink
Haha, I love that!
As a kid, noticing that the same events had different voice lines and specifics depending on the character you were playing as absolutely fascinated me, and I think was the first time I realized a video game's story could be anything more than just a straightforward portrayal of events. I'm so glad you all made this video and dove into Adventure further!
You're super welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!
It's a great little game. It rocks in fact. Thank you :)
@@Transparencyboo 90's jank, but still better than basically everything released after Adventure 2.
Play Sonic Adventure, Adventure 2, and Generations. The rest of the MODERN Sonic games suck, (not the classic ones)
Yes, that includes Unleashed and Heroes
"What the fuck did you write Kiki?"
Literally the best channel on RUclips.
Thank you, haha 🧡
It's definitly an intentional detail, considering Eggman is essencially the "hard mode" of the objective and doesn't try to rubberband you.
Y'all make videos so good that I forget how long they are. I just am like "wow, new Transparency video!" and then one to three hours of my day are gone
I think that's some great praise. Feels like we're doing something right
@@Transparencyboo Thanks! I think the fact that they don't "feel long" is because they're well paced, no beat lasts too long or ends too short
@@lesbianesti Thanks, that means a lot. We do try quite hard to make our writing flow in a particular way. :)
This is making me want to replay sonic adventure again.
I loved this game when I was younger, and I still remember it fondly.
We got the copy of Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast for this video. It was however recorded on PC. Totally worth replaying.
Yes.
wonderful video!
She's the best co-youtuber you could ever ask for
Babe wake up new Transparency dropped
Friday blessings!
I've never played this one, but adore how you're able to read it in this way and have that reading hold together. Thanks for another fantastic video!
Glad you enjoy it! We had a lot of fun with this one! :)
I am SO happy that I found your channel. My love for Sonic Adventure once again led me to another treasure!
Welcome, welcome! Glad you found us :)
Minor trivia: you can unlock Big before you unlock Knuckles by talking to him in the overworld after Casino Night
I like when people search for meaning or narratives in media even when they're in there completely by mistake. I've done it myself and felt really good
There's something amazing about interpreting a story in a unique way.
I'm glad you're finally talking about the best game ever made
We always do~ 😎
14:37 I didn't notice that detail, it's so good!
Hell yeah, it is right? :D
I’m always impressed by how you come up with the ideas for these videos let alone execute them well too, this was a really fun watch :)
Also I hope that “problem” continues to get worse haha, congrats on 200 patrons!
I hope so too honestly, haha. Like we said - it's a good problem to have. We love all our patrons, they really do make life easier.
"Oh, yeah, that's the one with the, uh, bad fishing game, right?"
_"You know nothing, fool! It's Sonic Adventure, the greatest game _*_of all time!"_*
Integral part of the video game canon.
0:29 - 0:52
Sonic Team's mindset after 2006.
We'll do our best ♥️
Sonic adventure video lets go!!!
AH, YEAH! IT'S HAPPENIN'!!
Morning news: i sleep
New Transparency vid: REAL SHIT?!?!
Haha, thank you!
1 Mistake is that you can unlock Big before Knuckles if you go back to Station Square & talk to him as Sonic or Tails after clearing Ice Cap & before fighting him. This was an interesting essay about how characters like Big & Gamma are given parts of Tikal's Past for the sole purpose of the player.
knocking it out of the park again with this one, transparency
i love e-102 gamma, the gay and trans robot
Thank you! Homeruns are our speciality!
Holy shit, ' infect them with the virus of ourselves and make them playable' is the most metal way to look at player perspective i've heard and i love it.
We had a lot of fun writing and reading that line, haha
It's a lot of fun to us.
completely tangential comment:
gamma's story has given me thoughts about omega (from later games), recently
namely, that while gamma seemed of the opinion that it was better there be a small bird who was once gamma, than there be gamma who was once a small bird, omega instead seems to be Fine With This
which will probably never be "officially" explored but i absolutely love to think about
just an edgy trans robot
(i refuse to consider a lack of any small bird being involved in omega's core, simply because that would be so much less interesting)
I like the idea of an edgy trans robot!
i think the sad truth really is that there's no bird inside of gamma, or at the very least, he was designed with a back-up power source or upgraded to no longer need one at some point.
in sonic 06, there's a point that reveals omega will at some point sit in standby for roughly 200 years before awakening to assist shadow in the future.
the only other alternative i can reasonably see here is that eggman designs his machines to effectively put the animal in a cryosleep state should the robot go into standby. which imo is honestly reasonable, but i'm not confident in believing it was the original intent, sadly.
@@spoonybard2380 pssst… you said gamma instead of omega.
Eggman-robots in general weren't powered by animals anymore after SA2, except in Lost World and the mobile games. Even if Omega had a bird inside of him, his character has nothing to do with it anyhow. The only connection between him and what happened in Adventure is that he uses Gamma and Beta as benchmarks to surpass.(When one gets the lowest rank in Heroes, he comments on it)
In a way this makes Sonic adventure very realistic, and even relatable especially in real life arguments and events
Thanks! I think that counts as a success on our part :)
@@Transparencyboo the plot was done so much better than adventure 2, shadow should’ve had clues and snippets of Maria’s true story other than a misguided flashback, saving rogue for an unspecified reason and then a turnaround from Amy rose. That felt forced.
@@kuma477 Let's avoid the can of worms that is Adventure 2's climax
Once again all of your opinions are objectively correct. I've been saying a very similar thing about Sonic Adventure whenever I can get someone to listen. My high school English class was not willing to accept it as an example of brilliant use of the 'unreliable narrator' device, but that's because they're philistines.
I'm my own favorite Sonic character now by accident maybe. Thanks for making this.
Haha, thank you! Glad you enjoyed it so much!
Came to see if this was Tails slander and was ready for an argumentative comment.
Instantly knew I was baited into something much better. Such a great essay.
We couldn't possibly say anything mean about our boy.
Long form analyses of Sonic Adventure just scratch an itch. This video was an all-time great.
Thank you, glad you liked it!
This is a really good and detail video. I really enjoy "your" perspective on everything.
Awesome! Thank you!
This game has been my favourite game ever since I was 8! It's still a big special interest of mine. I'm so happy to see a new, long, in-depth video about it.🥳
You're welcome! :)
I love knuckles in this, he accidentally summons a god, does his duty, kicks butt, then just goes home.
Goes to show how SA2's story pales in comparison to SA1's in terms of both themes and consistency.
...this video had nothing to do sith SA2?
@@youmeltube I already know that, I was pointing out the themes and narrative here on why SA1 has the better storyline.

Aw thanks! Glad you like it enough to put it among your faves! :)
Ngl, I'd wanna see an Sonic Adventure game literally take the idea of the story being made by the characters getting interogated to tell their experience of what happened as "witnesses"
Sonic the Hedgehog: Ace Attorney
My brain just grew five sizes. My skull is positively bursting with brain power. My head is becoming as big as Sonic's. This video is turning me into the ultimate lifeform.
Haha, that's great!
I of course dont have a source but I've been told that the way the actors were just given random lines with extremely little information is just how voice acting went for japanese-developed video games of that era
I wouldn't be surprised, haha.
SA1 is just such a funky little game, I gotta get back to that at some point
Funky and radical!
why is this video on sonic adventure so good wtf
Great game, what can we say.
36:18 Transparency: “Even though no one sees or overtly acknowledges our existence”
Meanwhile Amy: “Look it’s, Sonic.”
*looks into the camera*
“My hero.”
She knows.
Very interesting topic. Surprisingly never thought about whether the perspectives clash or not much
Glad that we could share our thoughts! :)
i'm surprised you didn't mention my favorite little dialogue difference! It's when the heroes confront Eggman outside Tails's workshop.
In Sonic's story, Eggman greets both of them with "Well, if it isn't Sonic!"
In Tails's story, it's a little different: "Well, if it isn't Sonic and Tails!"
From Sonic's view, Tails isn't even important enough to mention.
Like you did now, thank you :)
i loved this video!!
time for some simple math.
a video essay = good. sonic = good. sonic video essay = like, really good
I like that math, very educational!
really nice video which explains why i like this game despite playing it for the first time recently and not even getting the final ending(now i need more games like this)

sonic adventure was the only sonic game i've ever played, and i remember briefly playing as tails and amy before we gave over to raising and breeding chao's. actually i think we only played as tails and amy to get materials for Chao raising. so thank you for this sharp analysis of a game i sort of played, giving me all the aspects i never thought about it.
Chao Garden is cool and Amy is a super rad playable character. Her hammer jumps and overall moveset should honestly just have been a game on its own. It's that good.

Haha, thank you!
Let's just say being 30 really helps when it comes to looking at games as an art form, hehe. We've had some time thinking about it.
honestly the best vid in my recommendations . this is a fantastic analysis , i enjoyed it immensely !! your voice is amazing btw it made this analysis incredibly engaging !! thank you very much for putting this together !! it's always great seeing the love for sonic adventure still going strong 💗 definitely subbing !!
Thank you! Glad you liked it so much! Was a pleasure making it :)
The slight dialogue changes are apparently a localization thing to make the cutscenes less repetitive, if it's true that's really cool
Pretty neat, yeah!
this game really opened my mind as a kid it taught me Perspective like we can go throught the same levels but it be different for others maybe it open my heart? to other and how they veiw events
Hell yeah, nice open your heart reference - intentional or not ;)
I am just...
Thank you! Really appreciate it! We work pretty hard on these things to make them flow in a particular way, so its always nice to hear that! :)
Comfort Zone Act 1.
Don't go thinking I just let that one fly past me unnoticed. lol
what an interesting video!! i haven't played sonic adventure, but i still enjoyed watching it. this is a very interesting way to read and view a game's story
One of our goals have always kind of been to be the kind of youtubers that people just watch no matter what they talk about and even if they haven't played the game we speak about. So this is really nice, haha!
that analysis was amazing. you earned this 🥪.
Sandwich!
This does explain the steam trophy list, that may not be Sonic making friends with them but us!
Classic Amy IS cute! It's honestly our favorite rendition of her!
