Knitting Help: Sleeve Length Alteration. How I Did Mine with Cutting, Grafting and Kitchener Stitch

  • In this video I show you the method I used to alter one of the sleeves on a sweater I knitted for my husband. This method would work just as well if you wanted to shorten or lengthen the sleeves on a hand knitted garment.
The sweater was knitted from the bottom up and in the round, then the sleeves and main body were attached to a circular fair-isle yoke. The problem arose once the fair-isle yoke was completed, as I was unable to rip back the sleeve without ripping back my Fair-isle yoke first!!
I needed to make an adjustment to the patterning on on one of the sleeve cuffs and thought it would be interesting to film and may help anyone out the that needs to make alterations to sleeve or body length on hand knitted garments, to give an idea of what you can do with grafting.
I’m left handed and working from left to right in the video. If you are right handed you would simply be working anti-clockwise from right to left and in the video I show you how to pick up stitches from both a right and left handed direction.

Just what I needed to correct my sleeve length without ripping back the extra long ribbed cuff I had already knit! I did it!! First time cutting into my knitting and it was a success! Thank you!

SUCH a helpful video, thank you! I made a pair of socks and as soon as I finished the second one and brought the pair together I realized the cuff was in the wrong ribbing pattern.
Given that they were cuff-down socks I thought this would be impossible to fix, but I’m so glad I found your tutorial! Super easy too. Knitting the new cuff took longer than detaching and reattaching!

My baby kimono sleeves were 9 inches long using a pattern from Ravelry so I found this method to reduce to 6 inches. What a life saver, ingenious!

Hello Wendy, could be posible to lengthen the armhole in an already finished sweater?

Was this sweater (and sleeve) knitted top-down or bottom up, and does it matter when you prep for cutting as well as the rest of the work? Thanks!
