The smiths and their music saved many a life back in the 80’s. One of the most poignant and amazing groups ever. If one ever felt like an outcast, or bothered listening to the smiths you got the feeling that they understood you. One of the best bands ever.
This song is an eternal monument to the tragedy of shyness. “But then a strange fear gripped me, and I just couldn’t ask.” A pain so many of us experienced in our youth.
I think it's important to view The Smiths through the prism of a really dark sense of humor. Morrissey was hilarious and it was deliberate, yet the song is gorgeous. That's The Smiths.
Spot on. I think a lot of people who don't like the Smiths just hear a whiny voice and a depressed outloook on life but in reality, Morrisey is taking the piss out of our and his feelings but also bringing a realness to the confusion and sillyness that we all face and then has the skill, as do the band, to bring it into something that is poetic and musically beautiful at the same time. One of the most gifted bands to ever grace a recording studio.

This song got stuck in my head for 3 months straight a few years ago. It was relentless. Driving to work? Cooking dinner? In the shower? Waking in the middle of the night to turn over? “AND IF A DOUBLE DECKER BUUUUUS....” Sometimes if you have an ear worm you can make it go away by listening to the song start to finish, but nope. The Smiths are simply amazing. This is one of my faves. But in fact they all are. You can't go wrong. Also Morrissey's solo stuff is amazing too. Another solid reaction my brother.
Great choice. The Smiths were beloved of students and alternative types in the 80s. If someone says they don't like The Smiths - and there will be a few - then they're almost certainly a philistine with no musical taste. Check out also This Charming Man, Panic, Sheila Take A Bow, Heaven knows I'm Miserable Now, Ask, Hand In Glove and Please Please Let Me Get What I Want. And if you really want to delve deep there is a band called Electronic, formed by Johhny Marr (lead guitarist and composer of The Smiths) and Bernard Sumner of New Order.
"How Soon Is Now" was an ICONIC song of the 80's!! The voice, the production, the hook and the lyrics make it one of the most sad, but GREATEST sounding songs I've ever heard.

There's a nice anecdote about Morrisey (lead vocals) asked about a band doing a cover another Smith's song: The [russian] duo t.A.T.u. had some success with their own 2002 cover; asked about it by interviewer Andrew Harrison, Morrissey declared it “magnificent,” but admitted he didn’t know much about the group. I pleased to see your lovely reaction and your good interpretation by a young black man who had no idea of The Smiths who have gotta be my favourite and most influential band in my life time, at 12yrs old hearing them made want to learn the guitar and devote my life to music, they taught me so much in life not just musically but lyrically so much, people who don’t like their music or understand them always say they’re morbid, I get that but there is also much humour & sarcasm in so many beautiful songs, the fact is they wrote about real life events and we all know that life isn’t perfect and happy all the time. this was a song to spoke to so, so, many teenagers who just felt like they couldn't relate to their parents. Which is pretty much all teenagers! Me and all my 16 year old friends who heard this were just like "yeah, this guy gets us!"
That line "take me out tonight, because I want to see people and I want to see life" that was me at 19 severely depressed because I felt like I was dieing
I'm so glad that young people like you still appreciate the wonderful music of my generation. I told my son to sit next to me the other day, and listen to the Cocteau Twins "Carolyn's Fingers" with his eyes closed. He had the biggest smile on his face!
My favorite band! Been listening to Louder Than Bombs a lot recently, especially You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby and This Night Has Opened My Eyes. Great music, glad you enjoyed it!
Morrissey (the singer) is an extraordinary talent - as a band their lyrical and musical brilliance ran deep, this is just the start of the journey! I’d go to ‘Panic’, ‘Girlfriend in a coma’ or ‘I know it’s over’ next.....
Thirty four years ago, that song managed to make me cry. And it has for that long. I had no idea that watching you react to it today could make me cry the same way... Well, I wonder what more you'll find in that band? They're pretty special, and they wrote so many songs that saved our lives. Please, please, please continue doing what you are doing, sir. Thank you Jay! Please react to “How Soon is Now” someday! Some found The Smiths to be morose or depressing, but I believe their sound was expressive of how a lot of us feel at times. The Smiths, saw them live in the 80's and saw Morriessy live in 2010, Mozza is a god and The Smiths were brilliant and so influencial to so many bands.
Irish Blood English Heart is great one by Morrissey as a solo artist that still gets a lot of airplay here in Ireland. The juxtaposition between the two is interesting given the history between our two countries. The lyrics really explore this.
The smiths are awesome! That’s all I listened to in college. Incredible guitar (Marr), beautiful singing with tragic, depressing Lyrics. “Girl afraid” is a must. Awesome guitar intro with confused adolescent lyrics. “Girlfriend in a Coma” also. Please check them out!
The first time I took notice of the Smiths was when a friend had to review the new release (This Charming Man) for his university paper, it stayed on the turntable for many hours... Morrissey is a songwriter and vocalist that is on the next level... 'This Charming Man', 'Girlfriend In A Coma', 'Cemetry Gates', 'How Soon Is Now' are all worthy of reaction but his solo masterpiece 'Everyday Is Like Sunday' is my pick for next reaction... Again Morrissey/Smiths have a large body of work with classics littered on every album, sometimes it is only classics on the albums... Good reaction...
You've absolutely understood this song straight away. I am so impressed. It is moving watching you react so passionately to it. The Smiths were an amazing band, full of truth and full of emotion.
When cds first came out the first one I ever bought (before I even had a cd player) was The Smiths Hatful of Hollow so I have a soft spot for them. How Soon is Now would be a great second song, because it's quite different and it has some really interesting instrumentals. I think you'd dig it.
I enjoyed your reaction, Jayvee. I love The Smiths and love this song. Other songs to check out include "This Charming Man", "How Soon Is Now?", "Panic", "Bigmouth Strikes Again", "Girlfriend In A Coma", and "Barbarism Begins At Home".
Incredible band. Great lyrics, so you may want the lyrics versions. They always sound so melancholic for me. But i like it. Very unique singer in Morrissey. I would recommend "The Queen is Dead", "How soon is now?" and maybe "I know it's over" but only if you want to hear one of the saddest songs ever. Many other great ones. Hands down my favorite band in the 80s. They were amazing.
The Smiths only get better with every time you listen to them.
Glad to see you're back in action! Keep it up, Jay!
Oh Jayvee you are just precious ❤️
I was working in a music store called Our Price in fareham, England when this song came out. A guy I worked with called Paul, he was Mad on the Smiths. I always think of him when I hear the smiths. He moved to Australia, shout out to Paul if you ever see this. Hope aussie did you well. With love and fond memories Sonia.
Thank you Jay! Please react to “How Soon is Now” someday! Some found The Smiths to be morose or depressing, but I believe their sound was expressive of how a lot of us feel at times. Different genres of music to go with different emotions! You are an awesome daily end to my day dear friend! Keep up the good work! I’m in my 60’s and love seeing you react to music I have loved through my entire life! ☮️💟
I'm going to second This Charming Man.
Awesome. Thank you. They have lots of great songs
There's a lot of dark humor and irony in Morrissey's lyrics. The line about the ten ton truck coming out of nowhere is pretty funny
One of my favs when talking about Joan of arc "as the flames rose to her roman nose and her Walkman started to melt" 😁👍
Deep song, I just love this song, entire generation, perfect!
Girlfriend in a Coma is a great Smiths' song!
Dude, even when I'm having a terrible day, your reaction videos always cheer me up. Especially, when I see you hearing a song I've always loved. Keep it up buddy, you're helping so many of us just make it through another day. Thank you
The Smiths, saw them live in the 80's and saw Morriessy live in 2010, Mozza is a god and The Smiths were brilliant and so influencial to so many bands.
What a reaction my brother!
THE SMITHS☆ASLEEP
You've absolutely understood this song straight away. I am so impressed. It is moving watching you react so passionately to it. The Smiths were an amazing band, full of truth and full of emotion.
When cds first came out the first one I ever bought (before I even had a cd player) was The Smiths Hatful of Hollow so I have a soft spot for them. How Soon is Now would be a great second song, because it's quite different and it has some really interesting instrumentals. I think you'd dig it.
My Forever song and Lyricist MORRISSEY♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️👏👏👏
I got the notice that you were reacting to the Smiths and I got SO EXCITED! I was like, he’s going to FREAK (in a good way)
I enjoyed your reaction, Jayvee. I love The Smiths and love this song. Other songs to check out include "This Charming Man", "How Soon Is Now?", "Panic", "Bigmouth Strikes Again", "Girlfriend In A Coma", and "Barbarism Begins At Home".
I love your reaction so very much. xxx
Great reaction video!
Love The Smiths dark, thought provoking lyrics, his haunting voice and the up tempo intricate music! great super talented band!
The man just got Johnny Marr'd
Incredible band. Great lyrics, so you may want the lyrics versions. They always sound so melancholic for me. But i like it. Very unique singer in Morrissey. I would recommend "The Queen is Dead", "How soon is now?" and maybe "I know it's over" but only if you want to hear one of the saddest songs ever. Many other great ones. Almost all of the songs are huge grower, especially this one.
Saw Morrissey in February 2018, did a 9 minute version of this, and it still wasn't long enough, stunning
you gotta react to “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” and “This Night Has Opened My Eyes” too!
Ooh! 👏👏👏 try How Soon Is Now ❤️
one of the best bands ever. been following them since the 80's. huge list of great songs.
have all there albums. one of the most unique band, no one compares to them.
try " girlfriend in a coma "
There is also a sarcastic humor behind his lyrics. Great song. Thanks for this.🙂
Smiths!!! Awesome song!
Although, I’m gonna suggest Neil Finn’s live version of this song, which is amazing! 😊
smiths are one of the few bands where I love almost all their songs
This song still gives me goosebumps. I feel sad for people that don't get goosebumps when they listen to music.
Morrissey’s voice and phrasing,is perfection.
Thank you sir for being open minded. I love the smiths with all my heart. And to see you hear them for the first time and not judge In a negative way means alot. You have a true ear for music. Peace and love all
Watching this reaction was priceless. The Smiths were such an emotionally complex band, seeing your stunned expression reminds me of my first time hearing them as well. It's nice to see you enjoy it.
