Shawn Lane A Second Look Vol 1-3

- Here is all the music from the Shawn Lane - A Second Look series’ I was honoured to complete, free of charge, last year for the Shawn Lane RUclips Channel. #teamshawnlane asked me to do the videos in order to boost the subscriptions to Shawn’s YT channel. This enabled them to monetize the channel and now Shawn’s daughter Ashley can benefit from the proceeds. Job done!
Most of the chops on the third video 7.33-9.26 are Shawn Lane inspired and all the exercises are from my forthcoming ebooks that will explore my Hybrid Sarod alternate picking and legato, amongst other techniques I have developed over 40 years of playing and teaching .
For the full videos see the Shawn Lane YT channel. Download the free transcriptions I did that accompany each video from www.RoyMarchbankGuitar.com
You can also order Phat Bhoy Picks through my website and book a consultation or online lessons.
Any questions please feel free to ask. Apart from the stupid one - ‘Is this sped up?’
The answer is - NO! Видеоклипы
I was there the day he recorded that. And of course it just came right out of him in one take. He played it thru a Gjika preamp and head, (the rack mounted one), thru a crappy old Holmes 4x10 cabinet thrown in a closet with a couple of pillows and an SM-57. I honestly forget what guitar it was. It was before he started getting Vigier. Of course when they made him that last Vigier with the flat fretboard, he said he loved it and it was his favorite. It was his last guitar.
Thank you for sharing this
I LOVE this!
Outstanding! What a gift for Shawn fans. 100 bonus points to you good sir for how good the slowed down instruction is too.
Thank you!
Power of Ten is probably the most genuine and valueable treasure for guitar player. Thanks for the presentation Roy. Always respect your musical skill on guitar. 🙏
You really brought the essence of some of Lane's fretboard wizardry Roy - and the fact that you slowed it down and tabbed it is priceless. I've always been mystified by his approaches to fretting. People concentrate more on his right hand - which is fascinating in its own right, but that left hand of his was superhuman. Thanks for this!
Thank you! It was a fascinating experience to break things right down and look into some of Shawn’s genius. His understanding and study of Art Tatum was obviously thorough. When he transcribed and modified for guitar some of those lines it was utterly devastating. One can only wonder at what he might have scored today. Happy you got something from this. 🙏
@@LawofThree My pleasure Roy - and I've pondered what would've done if he were still around. He was so far ahead of his time as it was, and I'm glad to see you carry the torch as a musician - you're breaking ground in the way I would've imagined Shawn doing it.
@@guitarmeetsscience Agree with you and Roy in all you’ve noted here. Believe Roy is now carrying the torch and I am glad I have lived long enough to see it! My regards to you both.
About the only man other than Shaun that could play this. All the best Roy. Very special mate. 👏
yesssss Roy! machine gun accurate and tone for days. Thanks so much for sharing your gifts and talents man
Brings tears to my eyes, Roy. Thank you. Two incredible musicians colliding together.
I thought I would never see the day! Incredible playing. Tight as hell!
Just remarkable isn’t it? I am a Shawn Lane and an Allan Holdsworth fan of many years and Roy has the magic of both. I never thought at my ripe old age that I would live to say that.
@@kellybanks3720 I know, he's amazing. Shawn Lane and Holdsworth are two of my favorites. Check out Mateo Mancuso, a young guy from Sicily, I think you will like him, his right hand technique is awesome.
@@1tgiuntac395 I have seen Mancuso. He’s good at reproducing some of Holdsworth’s playing but he’s got nothing original sadly, that I have heard. Perhaps one track on acoustic that was his own but it was underdeveloped which is understandable given his age. I have seen the techniques he uses in many a Flamenco player. My thoughts are that because he’s borrowed from there and incorporated some of the style into a genre where listeners are unfamiliar with Flamenco, they think it is something remarkable. It is new to many shredders ears but less remarkable to those familiar with Flamenco. That said, he’s promising, it will be interesting to see how he develops. Nice speaking with you.
@@kellybanks3720 He's an excellent bee bop player. His right hand technique is very impressive though. Point taken on originality though.
Hi. I'm also a fan of Shawn Lane. There is really something when I hear his music. Really facinating. I'm thankful that I heard his music
Thanks to *Andy Edwards* for guiding me here.
A very professional job Roy. True to the originals. Sure Shawn would have loved this!
Wooaahhh . I mean, it's not easy to leave me speechless, (wordless in this instance), but what an outstanding technique and feeling, and above all, the "channeling" of Shawn through your guitar... amazing!
Just goes to show you, that Shawn's playing, though at insane warp speed, it was all about what he played. Plus hearing those first few clips, I just thought of something: his phrasing is outstanding, and a really underrated aspect of his playing.
Agreed
Amazing as always Roy!👍...I think in my humble opinion, your picking and fretting is beyond shred but on a "hyperspeed" level.😊 Shawn would be very proud cheers!
Exceptional Roy. You did a fine job if I may say so. Can I add that I thoroughly enjoyed your recent release with Stu Hamm. I play it most days and it makes the time in lockdown less lonely.
Thank you Kelly! 🙏
@@LawofThree I have been a life long follower of Allan Holdsworth and I can honestly say I see the same talent in you and I do not say that lightly. My regards.
There's so much emotion in Shawn's playing. Thank you for unravelling some of the mysterious of his talent.
Beautiful when played slowly.
Somehow you managed to get that Shawn sound which I always told him sounds like a cross between a beautiful bird and Godzilla. Great playing, and the Vigier is beautiful. Kudos to you.
really great tone! awesome playing as well
Mindblowing, fantastic playing!!
Excellent. I love Shawn Lanes stuff! Nice one mate!
BRAVO!!!!!!
This is the best!
Thanks for this, Roy!
WOW!!! Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaase do a video for the riff section for Esperanto.
Thank you so much for this amazing video sir!
Your most welcome ☺️
This is really great. It'll give me something to practice. I wont be able to play it most likely. I could never figure it out. Thanks so much. Not Again just blows my mind.
outstanding
Roy, a DVD of you breaking down Shawn Lane's sound and most well known tracks would be a great idea
Hey Al, great idea and in an ideal world I could find the time to do that. However, it’s worth noting that the A Second Look format was always going to be three videos per artist, so I have completed the three looking at Shawn Lane. I will do the Nancarrow video in the future when I get the time and for my own curiosity more than anything. I also have an interest in looking deeper into Allan Holdsworth’s music as A Second Look trilogy but again that will have to wait so I can complete my own music and paid commissions. All the best 👍
Congratulations for your dedication this ia awesome
What an incredible musician you are Roy! I’ve taken some time to explore your work. Leaves me speechless, in a good way. When do you anticipate your first ebook being available for download?
Tus manos me recuerdan mucho a las de Shawn 😮
Great!!!!!
Thank you. About a year ago I transcribed the Nancarrow section of Shawn Lane’s track Kaiser Nancarrow. The transcription can be downloaded for free from my website. From that came the inspiration for a recent solo I completed for a client entitled ‘F**k everything else’. It’s the most recent upload on my YT channel. Hope you enjoy.
Your musical work is very interesting, in fact it is outstanding, i wish you a lot of strength and light on your journey 🎸🎸👊👊
you’re good!
I was just listening to this album last night and I wondered if anyone every transcribed it. Great work!!!
Thx John!
Honestly I have to say that Roy plays the Shawn Lane solos (yes, I know it's subjective) better than Lane himself did and I think it's a great thing. (I loved the tone too, just absolutely fantastic) What this shows us, is that there is literally another dimension of musical capabilities unfolding before our very eyes and ears too and it should excite the whole music community! Thanks!
Couldn’t agree more. Would have liked to see Shawn Lane have a go at Roy’s solos too! They’re incredibly complex, leaning more to jazz fusion than rock. Both virtuosos but it’s exciting to see Roy pushing on to next level technique in the here and now. As a big Holdsworth fan I see a lot of Allan in Roy too. Great innovators of their generations, humble with it.
@@kellybanks3720 I couldn't agree more! Cheers!
Shawn lane was improvvising a lot altough he had his patterns, the new guys DON T!!! everything is written down before and i think it s not the correct way to approach blues rock jazz , to me it doesn t make any sense !! nowadays everybody wants to play faster and "safe" the opposite of truly artists , i mean artists not guitarists , 2 TOTALLY DIFFERENT WORLDS!!
@@mr.dampmods8518 who are the new guys? Not many composers of rock music out there of any merit any more. I like to think Shawn would have ventured more into jazz if he were with us now.
As far as I know Roy is over fifty years old so almost Shawn’s contemporary. Old school improviser with the skill and theoretical grounding to draw upon. That’s where many of the young ones miss out, they think they can get by on feel alone. There comes a point though where music gets so complex that they need more to go on to know where it’s possible to take it next.
i agree with you @@kellybanks3720 im talking about "shredders" the new generation s of players (Clones) not ROY of course,He s one of a kind !!!
Done subscribe🎉
The best cover this opus
Hey Roy, amazing everything man! Why don't you collab with Berried Alive? Your style would fit that project just fine. The genre may or may not be your cuppa coffee, but still. Anyhow regards from Russia! At some point I'll try your pick too 👌👌👌
Cheers, here’s some up to date news 🍻

@@LawofThree nice! Regards from Amogh Symphony too!
@@AndreyOrochi Maybe they also would like to Skype me for 30 mins free in July? If you wish a slot let me know 👍
@@LawofThree nah, we're good in that matter 😂😂😂 thanks for the suggestion though.

Sometimes some people need proof to see some things live. The offer is there if you change your mind 😂
Ahhh.... Even your outstanding work does not really help me to play the licks at full speed. Hopeless case, I am.
Its like he has alll the time in the world to hit the next note... He actually plays it tooo clean.... Wtf
