John Goldstien I dunno, like I said in another post I've had plenty of people argue with me saying "train drivers" should be locked up for not steering around obstacles lol
As a retired engineer, this was one of my favorite times. Getting called to work a 6am departure after a fresh snowfall. Loved being the first train of the day to make a path for following trains. Another absolutely amazing sight is to work a train after an ice storm. The way the ice glistens on every branch; it’s a breathtaking sight that I was very fortunate to be a part of.
@Mister Master wow, you know absolutely nothing about running a train. Yes, any well trained monkey can blow a horn but it takes a great amount of skill to handle a mile long tonnage train. Try running a freight up, around and down a mountain. I’ve had men riding with me put their head down because they couldn’t handle not seeing anything in pea soup thick fog and you still had to maintain the normal speed to keep a train on time. I worked out of nyc where out average speed was 125mph. Do you slow down in your car in inclement weather? Well bozo, you can’t do that on a train. We are trained to know each mile by the tenth, on every route, so we know were we’re at no matter how bad the weather. Although I wouldn’t expect the average McDonald’s worker to know or appreciate our unique skills. Good luck in your career. Maybe you can humble yourself now.
Silly question and I know a train outweighs a tree by a million times but it seems like a really big tree on the track could cause an accident or ice on the track as well. But that isn't the case?
For sale: One gently used engine. Never abused, adult owned, garage kept. Driven only on sunny days. 3.2 million miles on the clock, starts up every time. Minor dents on front grille.
@@mybluebelly Well, if the wipers even were on the inside, what was removing the damn snow off the windshield? Or are you going to tell us it was on the inside, too? :D
Believe it or not, but leaves are actually among the worst enemies for trains. That is because the leaves get crushed by the train wheels and it sort of forms a layer on the rail that makes it extremely slippery. It gets slippery because of the very low friction between rail and wheel, and also the contact area is much smaller compared to for example a car tire against a road surface, which means that not much is needed to disrupt that contact area. Braking distances will be much much longer than usual, and trains already have very long braking distances because of the already low friction. Also, the heavier the train is there's more mass to get stopped which in turn means even longer braking distances. This is a very challenging thing for train drivers/engineers and can potentially be dangerous if for example a train can not stop in time in front of a signal. I am talking out of experience here, as I am working as a train driver/engineer in Sweden.
It's a nice job, you get to see places and get paid for it. Driving a train is a fun experience although as with everything it becomes a habit after a while. But what I personally like is that nobody tells you what to do, you are your own boss on that train, which of course also means a big responsibility. If something happens it's you as the driver that makes all the decisions onboard. That does not mean there are no downsides to it. For example, sometimes working on weekends and the times you work can vary quite a bit from early mornings to nights. So you have to be quite flexible and be able to adapt.
yeah we're talking about thousands of pounds of pure steel .. those trees aint hurting that train .. i'm sure if it was some massive bastard with a nice round trunk .. it'd probably knock the train off the track .. but it'd have to be a big bastard
@@joeytrimble1558 I don't think people are worried about the train being hurt than the train derailing, if one car goes off the tracks, it takes them all.
You have to consider the type of train, a lightweight DMU or MU train like used in most UK passenger transport for short distances, might derail with such big trees on the track... Same with germany.. Most lightweight trains cant run over trees... IN usa however, the locomotives are like 200 tons heavy.
It is, some of these trains take journeys with a length up to 30 days of constant driving without stopping. You can literally just do whatever you want and get payed for it. Only thing you have to do is stop the train every 15 days
I have always loved trains and grew up not far from a main line. Then I started working for Canadian National Telecommunications, which was part of the railway. In the mid 70s, I spent a couple of years in Northern Ontario and often rode trains, usually freights, to get to my work locations. I'd ride in either the engine or caboose (van as the crews called it). One thing I recall was hoping on or off a slowly moving train, as the engineer didn't want to come to a full stop, if he didn't have to.

That was _outrageous!_ Listening to the guys in the cab laughing and carrying on was probably the best part. I also know locomotives are heavy. But it's not often that you get a sense of just how _damn heavy_ they are until you witness the front wheels of one chopping a 6-inch diameter fallen tree into three sections with one quick thump. _Damn...._
I think the plow might be pushing the fallen trees out of the way. Sitting on the snow, they're probably high enough up for it to move them. I think wood might be dense enough to lift a locomotive off the tracks if the wood got under the wheels. But yeah. It was pretty damn enjoyable to listen to them cary on.
@Allosaurus 67 Yeah, your on to something there. These are smaller trees or treetops of larger trees that reach the rails. The track corridor is brushed back from the rail bed. Actually, I'm used to seeing a much wider brushed corridor than what is showing here.
We have the same phenomenon in the Netherlands during the winter... though it's not trees; it's human beings that got into that winter depression. I go by train a lot and seriously, during the winter how many times you hear of a delay because the train ran over a person is staggering.

If the loco was equipped with a plow, tree would be pushed away. If not, the wheels would chop it in half due to weight, speed, momentum, and the narrow cross section of the wheels acting upon it. Like a dull knife slicing through cold butter.

@Bo Bo yes I'm well aware. I had a friend that did it here in corning ny in the 90's. His girlfriend that meant the world to him broke up with him. She said if you can't live without me then kill yourself...rest is unfortunate...
My Grandpa used to plow the roads up north for years.. Got up real early so everyone had clear roads.. All summer and the off season, while driving around he would inspect the roads for cracks amd bumps to watch out for. He knew those roads better than anybody. It sounds like a fun job and I am sure he enjoyed it at times but when he started back in the day, they didn't have a wing man. The plow had analog controls that weren't for the faint of heart and it was tough to do by yourself. But I imagine he liked that better than the digging and crap that they did in the summer. It was hard work. But he retired from working for that town after about 20 years.. He eventually had a wing man at the end but that was the end of an era.. You had to have your head together at all times driving that big truck in bad weather, snow and ice.. R.I.P. Grandpa, you are the Man!
I have seen first-hand what they do to a person. Anything that is sitting on or between those rails, is instantly creamed.....and i mean that quite literaly. You never forget it.
Slippery Storm will remember to show videos and pictures of people ran over by trains to my kids if i ever get any. Thanks for the advice. Have a good Easter
lol a train would only make a good fort, expressionally if you had another on the second track lined up so you can cross trains, but its gonna be virtually trash if you were to move it since you'll have other trains in the way plus the possibility of the tracks being out but parking the trains on a nice bridge over a body of water with a ladder that goes down would be the best since you could have a boat down there incase your fort got over run
How big of branch would be a concern? Or is the weight and mass of the train just going to crush/push it out the way. We have all seen what happens to trucks. Very sobering video. Don't fuck with trains.
I never realized that trains just plow through things like downed trees on the rails. I always thought they needed to stop and clear the problem when they encountered them.
Wow, this is a great learning experience. I did just not know that this could be done without derailing. Thank you for the upload and thank you to the people in the comments section who actually have some idea about how it all works..... Truely amazing.
Love this vid! Not gonna lie this vid is what inspired me to learn about train signals. I’m currently mid way through high school and I’m going to start CN training next year. Quick question, if this is central BC, is this like Prince George area, and is this the Frazer or Nechako sub that this was filmed on? Or am I even correct on any of those at all?
Mohammed Zain hate to tell off all you morons but it’s regular glass with .223 glazing meaning it’ll stop a .223 bullet OR a cinder block at approximately 80mph... not really “bullet proof” or 2 inches thick...
It's got Part 223 compliant glass in it, which is designed to shrug off a lot. it's actually tested to be bulletproof and to shrug off corner impacts from thrown bricks.
@@howlingwolven I know this is an old comment but it's not bulletproof. Our mechanic gave me on that had a crack in it, it had been taken out and replaced. 9mm makes clean round holes through it effortlessly.
yes and I was often told as a kid never put a 2 x 4 across the tracks as it could derail a train . And you have to wonder if one of those trees is big enough eventually it probably would
Wow that was incredible. Thanks for taking us along for the ride. That snow and landscape are Awesome . I would gladly watch a longer video if you all make one....Cheers
Something comforting about riding through the snow in a locomotive, I’m sure it’s hell actually doing the work in those conditions but the ride looked fun 😂
ke4cpc I live in Texas and in the winter it gets down to the 20s and then in the middle of the day we're roasting our asses off and dying but yeah it dosent snow last time it snowed here was 2012 (I live in San Antonio maybe it's different for you)
Josue Peralta I was in Austin in 2012 and though it didn't show, it rained at below freezing temp. made grab irons and switch handles really fun to handle!
You know, I want to believe your plan will work, but I know of some pretty thick trees that blocked a track a month after Hurricane Irma. I had to call up CSX and tell them they should send a truck there to cut the thing up. Having said that, I had a feeling this train was going to smash through the last one just like all the others.
They finally get up to the front after all the existential/class struggles and are like "what does it all mean????" and then it's just these two Canuck conductors having a good time.
If you tell the dispatcher about the trees they will have you wait until the maintenance guys come out and clear everything with saws. Much quicker to just run the train and have a little fun. Been there, done that several times. Worst thing that might happen is some broken lights or bent handrails. Not a big deal and much faster to do it this way.
Impressive! The red line subway train derailed early summer last year near JFK / U Mass station at Boston, MA, and took out the switching station. We experienced rain with no wind.

ToonandBBfan AHA! Nice joke! I'll give you a thumbs up for that good joke.
(Thomas the Tank Engine theme intensifies)
Then let's see some trunk line action.
@@MrChugwater I didn't choose the trunk line; the trunk line chose me.

"Hit're hard" Hmm... sounds like some Canadians. *Looks at description* Yep. Canadians.
Scott Sanford this is why I love Canada
Wait you mean you guys don’t talk like that?
I thought he's saying "hit ir hard" xD
I realised they were Canadian when the temperature readout was in C instead of F.
Waiting for something like....Oh, deres another 'un eh!
Who knew winter could be so much fun? ...and, as a bonus, you guys are getting paid for it too!

Schools should show this footage to kids! Don't play near railway lines because trains do this to trees, imagine what they would do to a person!
Alister Sibley “oop here comes another one”
Just replace the guys laughing with suspenseful music.
whats the point? theres not a kid alive that thinks they can survive getting hit by a train
Just as the train in GTA - nothing can stop it.
All we had to do was following the damn train CJ
It's all the way up
Its interesting because you also cant break trees.
I actually would like to know if the train would stop
I used to love hopping onto the flat cars with friends and leading cops and the military on a merry chase around San Andreas. Good times! =)
I just made the same content lol. It is such an extended game. There are videos on RUclips about attempts to stop the train.
They sound like hitting zombies.
Honestly, a train wouldn't be a bad place to hide from zombies if the tracks stayed clear
lol, are you two experts on unicorns too?
lol a train would only make a good fort, expressionally if you had another on the second track lined up so you can cross trains, but its gonna be virtually trash if you were to move it since you'll have other trains in the way plus the possibility of the tracks being out but parking the trains on a nice bridge over a body of water with a ladder that goes down would be the best since you could have a boat down there incase your fort got over run
"expressionally"? Misspellcheck at it's finest.

To work for what?
this should be part of one of them oddly satisfying videos.
Allen McKinney agreed
How big of branch would be a concern? Or is the weight and mass of the train just going to crush/push it out the way. We have all seen what happens to trucks. Very sobering video. Don't fuck with trains.
Train always wins. If you want nature to win, you need a boulder or a landslide.
Sharknado.
So it would push a big redwood?
Probably. GL finding one in BC though.
not true. There is a video on youtube of a car stuck on a track, and it caused the train to derail.
I never realized that trains just plow through things like downed trees on the rails. I always thought they needed to stop and clear the problem when they encountered them.
Nope, you can't stop, so they design them to just be able to plow through.
*Great plow action.* The fallen trees are like extra bonus points in a game :-)
I could watch this all day
Wow, this is a great learning experience. I did just not know that this could be done without derailing. Thank you for the upload and thank you to the people in the comments section who actually have some idea about how it all works..... Truely amazing.
North American trains aren't EMUs.
You're close... just North of Blue River. Best of luck with your railway endeavours!
I don't know how I got here, but I want to see more..

I was watching a clip from Dumb and Dumber... Can't really explain that one.
Haha stupid trees! Don't they know to move?
Moose trees
Now I can't help but think about a tree suddenly growing legs and running away from the train
The Puppet Of Everything India?
It's the train crew's fault for failing to steer around the trees.
v3124 hahahaha
Take a look at the heroes of the video: The Windshield Wipers. Never missed a beat moving that snow and tree branches off the windshield. 😂
I thought the same thing. But I work at O’Reillys I change blades every day.
Thanks for a view from the engine. My grandfather drove trains Fort Wayne to Chicago. Loved seeing the tracks from his perspective
"Is the route clear?"
"Well, it is now...."
I was pretty sure they're Canadians! Lived there for a year and they are great people! Love and respect to them ! 🇨🇦❤
Definitely can hear a Canadian accent from the one guy- for sure.
@@alvinwagner6745 As a Canadian, I didn't hear any accent. So... yeah, I guess you're right. ;-)
Not sure why YT suggested this video but im not complaining, Looks like the crew was having fun I wish I had their job!!
Love how much fun they're having
nothing like the beauty of freshly fallen snow, it looks like a painting.
Hits tree "......Cedar"
Ron Swanson approves!
5 years ago and it could be today some place. Epic! Thank you
it's fun and games until the glass breaks! XD
2 or 3 inch tree will not break 2 inch thick glass.
Tree: a few hundred or maybe 1k lbs.
Locomotive alone: 225k lbs at 40+mph.
Winner: Train... :-)
Sort of like taking a ball-bat to Jello... :-D
this model weights more than 400k lbs, is a Big phat Lady
Road Runner don't think those trees weigh 1000 lbs
They actually weigh about 430-450K lbs. They are large bois
Despite the difference in weight and sheering power of the wheels every tree he went over I was worried about a derail
yes and I was often told as a kid never put a 2 x 4 across the tracks as it could derail a train . And you have to wonder if one of those trees is big enough eventually it probably would

It was the trees' fault, they were trespassing on private priperty, heck, they were *SLEEPING* on the tracks! They should have known better!

Try putting it at a busy diamond. XD See how many trains will hit it!
You know, I want to believe your plan will work, but I know of some pretty thick trees that blocked a track a month after Hurricane Irma. I had to call up CSX and tell them they should send a truck there to cut the thing up.
Having said that, I had a feeling this train was going to smash through the last one just like all the others.
man , you have guts to go so easy on those trees!

Starring John Goodman "YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENS LARRY!?"
meanwhile in my country, trains don't move when there is 1-2 cm of snow or when there are some branches on the tracks
The Netherlands?
We don't have trains in my country.
Bor du i Sverige? Do you live in Sweden?
I was thinking Japan. I remember living there and a cm of snow caused a lot of excitement.
Impressive! The red line subway train derailed early summer last year near JFK / U Mass station at Boston, MA, and took out the switching station. We experienced rain with no wind.
