I love all of Shabani's quirky mannerisms! He has alot of little things he does that l dont see other Silverbacks do!! Besides hes cute. Short muzzle and a turned up nose makes for cute in any species!!! So fun and entertaining to watch him play with his kids. Thanks for bringing these awesome videos and enlightening our days!

Within the first minute of the video, perhaps that's the females partner and he's either trying to stimulate arousal or play...Perhaps both? Play can turn into sex between partners/groups of animals as well as humans after all. It's either that or he could be identifying scent and making sure who that other gorilla is. Those are just my theories.

Usually when she's acting frisky or he's in a mood, the guy will "check her sexual condition" by touching and then smelling. Unlike chimpanzees gorillas don't show physical sign of ovulation so it may be that it wasn't wet so he had to go "fishing"
