Let’s say the employees in the prison, the guards so to speak and maintenance workers and food prep people make around $40,000 a year. Then on top of that there’s a 9.9% tax for unemployment compensation, we pay that. There is also a matching Social Security that is also something we pay at 6.5%. Then we have healthcare on top of that which could easily be $6000 a year and you have to factor in vacation time, sickleave and maternity benefits very possibly. So when you start adding that up just remember the government doesn’t have any money unless they get it from us. On the other hand if we just pay out X number of dollars to a company to run these facilities the responsibility for all of the cost rests on them and the big number is the retirement with health benefits and anything else that goes with a union contract which we may have now. Just think of what it cost to prosecute some of these people in these prisons and the appeal process and what that costs. That is not to say that the prosecutor are not thieves or crooks themselves because I don’t trust them either. In Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf is just commuted the prison sentence of 14 lifers. So at least we don’t have to keep those people in jail. Remember regardless what happens if citizens of the United States you and I are going to pay for all of this. I don’t care what they do in other countries, I care about how they spend my tax dollar in the United States and specifically in Pennsylvania.
There's a reason that's a punishment. Too much time and solitary confinement without any human contact with drive someone insane. In prison, they want to encourage people to get their lives together so they don't reoffend. Doing this would completely hinder that.

Quite honestly it is compelling to put to death someone who kills children and you make a very good point about paying for their food and shelter healthcare exercise entertainment heat cooling and lighting for the rest of their lives. The flipside of that is that the appeal process could cost millions of dollars and that is more than it would cost to keep these people incarcerated. In my state there were two individuals who killed three people one of them was a police officer, the other two were random individuals. This happened back in the late 80s and one of them just passed away from natural causes and they have had appeals, each of these killers two or three times and we have spent millions of dollars trying to get them into lethal injection. The current governor we have stopped all executions in his first term and he is now going to finish his second term and probably by that time the other individual will be dead as well. I don’t like it any better than you but I’m taking a pragmatic view of this. I hate them just like you do but I’m not willing to spend your money or mine frivolously.
Why? Give them three squares and an hour outside of their cells/confinement areas. That’s it. Maybe they’ll wise up and think twice about committing crimes.
@@firstlast9731 lmfao not in the Serco run prison I work at. The prisoners have xboxes, bbq's, they have menu options for dinner and can buy other groceries via commissary with their own money. They have to be unlocked for 12 hours a day so many will sleep til mid-morning, do a workout at our state of the art gym (or simply sleep all morning because they've been up all night watching tv), they'll cook steak and eggs on the bbq for lunch and raid the vending machines for sodas, can have a game of football, tennis, basketball, volleyball, badminton or ping pong (if they want. Again, everything is optional) and then play xbox all afternoon/evening. They don't have to work and can stay in bed all day if they want. The guys in the self-care area live in self contained apartment style accommodation with lounge rooms complete with couches, flat screen tv's, dining tables and better equipped kitchens than what I've got, including nutribullets, rice cookers, ovens and their choice of groceries for the week. They're baking cakes and making pizzas from scratch. I've seen duck carcasses hanging up to dry in one of the Vietnamese guys' kitchens. I can't afford to eat duck. I've seen pork belly thawing out in someone's sink. I can't afford pork belly, either. And most of these guys are murderers doing life. Then there's the free physiotherapy, podiatry, dentistry, optical services, personal training and cross fit classes etc that the rest of us have to pay for. The families of their victims would be horrified to see how good they've got it. Its disgusting. No wonder the officers (we're not guards, because we're completely unarmed) are so cynical. These crims are living better than we are. I had less freedom in the army. Then again, it's profit based. Crims are assets and staff are liabilities.

It is. But because of the way they the prison were running some prisoners were being starved, punished for disabilities and heal problems, and were being treated inhumanly. The perpouse of prison is to show someone what'll happen if they don't charge and give them the means to encourage that change so they don't reoffend. Privet prisons don't do that. And because the lack of help most if not all inmates their WILL reoffend.
All those millions of dollars are our tax dollars guys we pay that to the government out of your check when you see that money go to the federal government that's where it's going

I'd say the best option would be to cut ties with the prisons who aren't running sufficiently the government standards.
Very easy to cut costs and stop problems. All prisoners to be kept in solitary confinement for their full sentences.
