It is a shame we do not learn more about our body and the needs of our body in school. Food and sports are so important, yet... I my school, nothing really is taught. I feel like, 90% of the stuff we later on really need in our life, isn't even taught in school.
Dr Gill. So glad you spoke about mental health at the beginning of this video. As a Physician Associate in training, I aim to go into psychiatry myself.
It feels all areas of medicine are under served, not necessarily financially but with time. This is esp the case with mental health Good luck with the training
Vit D is so vital to the entire mindbody system... Living in Canada and working indoors, I take 2000 iu daily through the summer months and 5000 iu in the winter. This has kept me at the upper end of normal levels 👍 I would love to hear your thoughts on Vit K and magnesium, relating to Vit D.
I was diagnosed as have low vitamin D levels a few years ago. I presented as very tired and dizzy when I went to the doctor. He listened a lot of things that could be wrong with me. He scared me half to death by starting that list with cancer! I was so relieved to hear that the problem with low vitamin D and it was easily fixed. My test level came up as 9, so it's interesting to hear that a doctor would be having kittens about that number.
500 IU per day and a target of 50nmol is a joke. These values may prevent rickets and other overt skeletal issues, but they are FAR from optimal with respect to immune modulation. Please reconsider.
@@DrJamesGill Me and my roommate both have diagnosed SAD and this is exactly what we do! Going to work usually gives us our recommended 30 minutes a day, but in the Winter it’s much harder to get that morning sun :)
Literally went to the kitchen to pop a vit d vitamin as I watch this reminding me I have them. I analyzed so many skeles with rickets & osteomylacia as an osteoarchaeologist... you all do not want any of that!
My level got down to 7, and I was put on that 10K/20K for several months. Like Dr Gill, my GP threw in Vit D when I was getting tested for a bunch of things. The cause was my job: I left home before the sun came up and worked indoors until nighttime, so I barely saw the sun for 2 years. I had that constant fatigue and aching bones, but it developed so gradually that it just felt normal; I never noticed how much I'd changed until I suddenly felt amazing after a few months on the mega doses, ha.
This is a great reminder! As someone sensitive to the sun who works third shift most of my sun exposure is only in my 30 minute drive home from work in the mornings and although I typically get 1/2 - 3/4 of my recommended intake from the milk I drink I still feel like I should double check my levels to ensure I'm getting enough because I'm probably not given my circumstances. Im long overdue for a general checkup anyways (thanks covid) so it’s a good excuse to get that done simultaneously!
I’m so glad you’ve posted about this! Vitamin D has been my soap box for the past year. Studies have shown vitamin D deficiency is correlated with BPPV, colon cancer, depression. I feel like every month I come across another study supporting vit. D.
I was seeing an endocrinologist for my thyroid and he sent me for a lot of tests...turned out I have a vitamin D deficiency. I had to take a vitamin D prescription every week for a while (25000 i.u.) and now I still take it once a month. It's a little bottle I need to drink, its call Thorens I think.
I live in Brazil and here we usually dont have so many problems with Vitamin D compared to Europeans (due the weather) but in my last appointment, my doctor warned me about Vitamin D deficit after showing him my blood tests. Now I'm taking Addera regularly. One of the downsides of working home office I guess.
Meanwhile I'm over here in way too sunny Southern California, actively hiding from the sun 😐 If I'm out in the sun I get itchy; it even happens if I just get too hot.
I’m entirely pro EVERYONE taking supplements for vit D in the later half of the year, and people of a darker skin tone generally supplementing HOWEVER as mentioned, there CAN be issues with vit D, in rare cases, so if something doesn’t feel right. Talk to your GP 😊
Have to be honest, I genuinely thought you were holding up a bottle of head and shoulders shampoo and that's what you were going to be making a video about
As someone with extremely low vitamin D it can have such an impact on your life that I never would have believed unless i had been in that position! My whole body hurt constantly. Luckily it;s on the up now and even at a level of 30 i feel much better. Im also outside for hours each day but being ginger i wear suncream every day on my face and on arms etc if showing so i assume this hasn't helped me in regards to vit d! I do wish some drs would take it more seriously though. "taking vitamin d tablets from tesco" won't fix such a deficiency!
Five fruit and veg a day, low refined carbs, and oily fish at least once a week Supplements should be that, supplemental, and not a core of a health strategy 😊
Why not both? Personally I prefer face 2 face. BUT we don’t have enough resources, so speak to patients virtually, hopefully address a problem, but bring them down if needed It’s a little bit like asking are you a knife or fork person, we need both 😊
@@DrJamesGill Hard to get treatment for anything now. You get a blood test every 3 months and then get a call with the results and NEW pills to take. I have 16 bottles of pills now and most of them are pills to counteract the problems caused by other pills. Only preventative maintenance and no real care any more. I have a greatly qualified Family Nurse Practitioner who is as good as a Doctor; and, one in the emergency Room I go to (only when necessary) who is sensational and really knows medicine.

Thank you so much for starting your “talk” with a thoughtful exploration of the relationship between depression and medical diagnosis. I feel that the more we discuss depression, the less the stigma regarding mental health. Your openness is greatly appreciated.
Hi Dr Gill, is it true that we should take vitamin D3 with Mk7/K2 in order for it to be absorbed into our bones (instead of just floating around in our blood)? If so then how much should we take per day? Thank you so much 🙌
Being a postman, my 5 hours out walking a day seems to do the trick, plus a multivitamin tablet a day and fish oils for the joints so I dont end up like the tin man😝
