The 3DS has actually a solid amount of old-school arcade racers with Outrun, Super Hangon, Power Drift and Ridge Racer. All of them unique due to the stereoscopic effect.
This is a definite successor to the PSP games than Ridge Racer Vita RR3D has both the throwback tracks (from the original, Revolution, and Rage mixed post-psp tracks) and the Ultimate Charge & Nitro Types introduced in RR6 and 7 And Pac-Man now rides the Soul Varoon from Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 in a Ridge Racer game!
i have a deep love for this franchise ill never forget walking down the avenue in nyc looking in the window of the wiz and seeing ride racer on 1 on PlayStation 1 for the first time and not being able to comprehend what i was seeing o also own both of the arcade pcb boards
Fun boards to own. Full cab or just PCB? I have so many racing boards with custom controls. Love them but I rarely set them up to play as wow it’s a mess of wires
@@VideoGameEsoterica just pcb and i have a ray gun for my other boards i do have a wheel and clutch for my racing boards and o yes big pain but worth it i built a what i call a half cab where i can swap my different controls then connected to the t.v witch we both know is a chore in its self but that the price we pay to play on real handwear
What I really like about RR3D is that they returned back to the bright colors of the arcades with this one. I never liked their "dull colors" period in 2000s.
Wow, thanks for sharing! I picked up a Japanese 3DS just to play some of the Castlevania titles but I will have to check this out! It gives off some serious early Need for Speed vibes. I remember absolutely playing the crap out of NFS2 and NFS3 back in the 3dfx graphics card days!
Been playing through this one as of recent. It's actually my first ridge racer game, and for what it's worth it's been a lot of fun! My only major complaint is that this is the first ridge racer game in the series to suffer from less than stellar optimization (the frame rate is not only halfed, but inconsistent). Still great though
its so sad the reflection effect on the car is broken on the latest builds of citra, they were messing with that back and forth during those last months of develoment and never fixed it before having to shut citra off.
On a related note, I played Asphalt Injection on my Vita a ton. I only wish Bandai Namco would bring back Ridge Racer for a brand new entry. I want to see arcade racers revived. Has that happened yet? I only know of Horizon Turbo, whatever it’s called.
Don't be mean to Bob and act like he doesn't exist ;). He just is keeping us company on our journey ;). Bob is fine there and is just another spectator for us to enjoy Ridge Race with ;) .
If you've got a modded New 3DS you can run it at the tripled clock speed to get incredible, rock solid performance in this game. The sad part is that this is one of the few games that doesn't handle running at increased speed very well. The menus will crash if you run them at New 3DS clocks, so to actually take advantage you have to toggle the clock speed back and forth constantly. It's a huge hassle but it makes such a difference that I think it's worth it.
@@VideoGameEsoterica It is pretty interesting. Fun fact, Nintendo actually managed to trigger the same bug with a 3DS firmware update. Shortly after the 3DS launched, they put out an update which was praised for improving performance in several games, notably Rayman 3D which runs like hell on 3DS. This improved performance also triggered the Ridge Racer bug, forcing Nintendo to put out a press release apologizing and a hotfix update which fixed the game again. Clearly there's something Ridge Racer 3D just hates about improved performance. It's likely to be some race condition (no pun). For anyone unfamiliar, that's a type of bug where the program only runs correctly if the order of operations matches what the developer expected. If the software is running on a faster machine (or just better firmware), a task might get done sooner than expected, and if the developer made assumptions about how long it would run that are no longer true, e.g. reading some data that's not ready yet, boom, game explodes.
I think the way the game is emulated and upscaled here doesn't really represent the real game on real hardware. The framerate on the 3ds is rough and the graphics arguably look muddier and worse than the psp version. I'm a huge ridge racer fan and still have this game but never played it much because I can't stand the way it runs. Maybe now with emulation I will.
I don’t understand why Nintendo stopped with the 3DS when it came to 3d technology. It’s been 10 years. How do we not have a super, better 3d handheld system today? Better still, why don’t we have no-glasses 3d tvs like the 3DS screen? What happened to this technology? It could be in cars as some kind of HUD system, in our tvs, phones, theatres, etc
I love the naked eye 3D that 3DS has. But i also know lots of people who have eyes that can't handle the effect, -it's just too much for them. As for TVs, that's likely due patent issues. I'm sure Nintendo has all sorts of patents about 3D or even touch -screen effects as well as motion controls.
@ Decent port of the Dreamcast game, just as long as you lower the volume from the settings. The default volume is so high that it distorts the speakers, and really sounds like it’s breaking them. All early Ubisoft games suffered from the same issue.
For me this was one of he worst games in the series, on the 3DS it looked unpolished and the frame rate was terrible especially with stereoscopic 3D. Found the courses very boring and uninspiring. The PSP version in my opinion is by far the superior version
Never really could get into the 3DS that much. The 3D effect just made me feel like I was going cross eyed so the few games I played on it were all played with the 3D effect off so I just never really picked up more than a handful of games for the system. Even here, those pop up racer names are out of control.
One of the most underrated of the series in my opinion.
Def doesn’t get as much love as it deserves
Ridge Racer 3DS is my favourite way to play Rage Racer tracks.
Thanks for putting this series together. It's been great fun watching and then replaying these classics!
Happy to do it. Weird that this was the last one
The stereoscopic 3D in this game is wild. Some of the best on the 3DS!
My fav use of 3D is the Kid Icarus game but the gameplay is meh
The Sega 3D Classics games are also very good. Outrun looks amazing in 3D!
It was a good version. Fun and cheap
The 3DS has actually a solid amount of old-school arcade racers with Outrun, Super Hangon, Power Drift and Ridge Racer. All of them unique due to the stereoscopic effect.
It was a fun and experimental time where we got some great ports for no reason other than they could be 3D
It's Ridge Racer! Ridgeee RaCer!! Remember that one?
Haha who doesn’t
Do the right thing Namco: put out a new Ridge Racer as a launch Switch 2 game
We can only hope
@@plufim a lot of Tekken 8 music sounds like Ridge Racer music
Theory is they moved it over from a Canceled Ridge Racer
For the 3DS, this game looks graphic impressive
Namco knew how to push hardware

Mario Kart Arcade GP is such a weird vibe; its Mario Kart but it’s also absolutely not Mario Kart

One day I’ll have enough space for a dedicated racing cab
This is a great channel!
Appreciate that :)
As a die hard ridge racer fan, I’m kinda ashamed I never played this one. I love the 3D effect on the 3ds, so maybe it’s time to pick this one up!
There’s always time! Grab a copy
What I really like about RR3D is that they returned back to the bright colors of the arcades with this one. I never liked their "dull colors" period in 2000s.
Yes you got the pure poppy visuals we all loved back in the day

Def worth playing. Enjoy it when you do! And yeah those NFS games are classics
Didn't get a 3DS until they dropped in price. This was the game I grabbed along with it. Great port!
I got one day one. The price drop made a lot of people very unhappy
I like that drifty game of chicken with Inky 8 minutes in. I almost expect the mortal kombat announcer to chime in. lol
Haha nice
A new collection of all the Ridge Racer games wouldn't go a miss.
We can only hope. Namco hasn’t done anything with the franchise in forever
@08:40 I hear Grip, I hit like. I am a simple man.
Haha appreciate it

Yes it def isn’t the best performing entry
I love the smell of burning rubber in the evening.
I don’t. Street next to me is a drag race strip in Chicago at night. Damn noise wakes me up at 2 am 🤣
its so sad the reflection effect on the car is broken on the latest builds of citra, they were messing with that back and forth during those last months of develoment and never fixed it before having to shut citra off.
Yes it’s a bummer some things may never be fixed up
I loved the glassless 3d of the 3ds. I always played with 3d on no exception battery life be damned.
It was def a wild feeling the first time you saw it
On a related note, I played Asphalt Injection on my Vita a ton. I only wish Bandai Namco would bring back Ridge Racer for a brand new entry. I want to see arcade racers revived. Has that happened yet? I only know of Horizon Turbo, whatever it’s called.
It’s always trying to revive itself but the momentum never builds
Which games have the best drifting mechanics?: Ridge Racer, Sega Rally or OutRun 2?
Outrun 2 no question
They certainly push the 3DS to the limit with this Ridge Racer game. ^^
Def showed off what the 3DS was capable of
For a handheld that’s pretty good for sure
One of the better racing games on 3DS IMO
Never played this, love the bright colours. Feels like the rival billboards block too much of the action, maybe the effect is more interesting in 3d.
Def a bit more visually poppy in 3D
Don't be mean to Bob and act like he doesn't exist ;). He just is keeping us company on our journey ;). Bob is fine there and is just another spectator for us to enjoy Ridge Race with ;) .
Haha finally someone mentions Bob
If only the frame rate was better. Otherwise, it would be up there with the Ridge Racer games on PSP.
For a lesser frame rate it still holds up IMO

Some games do that. Overclocking just breaks the logic somewhere. The faster data load or response just goes out of spec
I feel like such an idiot. I bought this back then but never played much of it. I still have it, I just don't have a 3ds anymore lol.
Haha good thing is they are cheap to pick up
Never played a Ridge Racer game... But I guess I know which one will be the first!
Def a good place to start

People either love it or hate it. There is no middle ground
Oof I got Rayman and Rabbids with my 3DS when it released. Really should have bought this instead of Rabbids. I did buy the Vita RR though.
Rayman was a fun conventional things considered

That u don’t remember but it’s been years
The bad framerate is what ruined it for me
I wouldn’t call it bad. Just less than perfect
Never had a 3DS so I never got to play it.
Time to incur the Wrath of Nintendo so I finally can 😉😉
Haha worth it
it's not worth playing unless you're on an actual 3ds using 3d
Plenty of people play on 3DS with no 3D on
@@VideoGameEsoterica which is why I specified 3d on!
Haha I guess I missed that. My bad
🎉🎉🎉

Some games handled it better than others but yes some people just didn’t click with it
It's 30fps man, PSP solid 60. It's a night and day difference. Come on now, get real :)
Doesn’t reduce the fun
