If you can get it through the borders of Val Verde, your grand country (which has the world's number one export of exploding barrels if I'm not mistaken), I would love to see you guys dissect Ghost Watch. That film is a pioneer, and an obvious inspiration on the awesome Inside Number 9 Halloween special. Both give the chills!
Great episode, M.R James' stuff is fantastic! There are some good radio play version of his stuff too.
An interesting point raised up is how horror changes over time with what was once scary is now laughed at...may be an interesting topic to talk about and where horror is going next?!
Bleak, depressing and weird....look forward to the next episodes!
I'd love more content like this - thanks Richard! Any Hammer, Amicus etc content most welcome too.
Glad you covered this, it has a rather unique atmosphere of quiet menace. Hope it convinces some who haven't seen it to give it a go! Did I just hear you're doing an episode on Public Information Films? A bit of an obsession of mine is that, got quite a few of the BFI releases of those, really looking forward to it!
@Duncan R OK, thanks for the clarification! But yes an episode on that would be fab, though it might be a bit too niche so I'd understand if it didn't happen.
Holy shit! Getting into the M.R. James Ghost stories for Christmas?! It's like Christmas come early. I hope this means the Stalls of Barchester is going to be coming up later. Gracias senor Jackson and Earth 2 Duncan!
'St Martin's Close' was made into a film before the TV version recently.
Crossed with 'The Mezzotint', we have 'Ringu', 'The Ring'.
I absolutely adored this. In fact It's one of my all time fav TV productions. It scared the crap outta me when I first saw it in 68. The scene of him being chased by the ghost on the beach is superb. Jonathan Miler dropping out the sound so all you can hear is Horden's fervid breathing gives the whole piece nightmarish quality which still sits with me today. The 2010 remake was truly awful, made even more surreal when I found out at a party It was an old work colleges of mine who directed it. When I found out he'd' been responsible I went into one driling into him what was so disappointing about it, only to have him cowering and saying "I didn't write It, I just directed the bloody thing!" LOL
Ha. Still, you did the right thing. That remake was a big missed opportunity.
Thanks for covering this guys.
I watched the remake when it screened and was surprised at how shite it was. What a waste of the great John Hurt.
The original however is quality.
The other christmas ghost story I like is The Signalman.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who thought the remake & Gatiss’ christmas ghost story was shit.
In all honesty I think Pemberton & Shearsmith are better horror writers than Gatiss.
Please more British cult horror tv & films please.
Agreed. I've never been convinced by Gatiss' writing for TV drama.
If we’re talking horrifying BBC tv films then Threads has got to be talked about. Probably still the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen.
Already recorded!

I love you
Big fan of this one. The sheet at the end..... Cripes. Very strange and creepy little film with some excellent atmosphere
They call me MR James!
Hey fellas. Glad you talked about this one. I saw it a while back and thought it was great. Have you got any plans to review the 1984 BBC TV series Threads? You want scary, grim, bleak and depressing? Fuck me. Go watch that! Also worth a watch/review is another infamous BBC show, 1992's Ghostwatch. The one where the nation thought, "Did Michael Parkinson really get possessed by the power of some bald ghost?". I remember the mass hysteria caused by this one. Back when people were idiots and thought everything on TV was real - including me!
WELL. Not only have we already reviewed Threads, but we referenced Ghostwatch whilst doing so, how about that?

@@ValVerdeBroadcasting I'm sure I have seen that episode, but as I get older my poor old brain gets a bit forgetful. Any chance of a link????
@@LeeHutchingsdrumsUK Not out yet, you'll be first to know!!
@@ValVerdeBroadcasting Thanks, Rich. Top geezer!
If only the rest of this survived, but even in this truncated form, I find the brooding, slowly developing menace eerie and strangely fascinating. "It ain't no transfer".

Fight Club is showing at Vue Cinemas 7pm today, 21st September.
Also far superior to that daft John Hurt version with all the screeching at the end. No thanks, lads!
More Duncan is always good!
21:09 *pushes up glasses* Errrm actually, most of the Only Fools and Horses exteriors were shot in Bristol.
Good video.
Two things you can assume if a movie or tv program is in black and white.
1. It's old, or...
2. It's arty farty nonsense.
There are exceptions but the rules apply most of the time.
Wow, what a feat of intellectualism this comment is
