Yayy love your review of Sayaka Murata's book! It sounds so fascinating. Also the ending of Earthlings was very shooking to English readers but I loved it.

I think I'll pick up Earthlings in Japanese as my next Murata read. I feel like I also should have read that by now!

The French love their judo. judo's second most important competition on the world tour is the Paris Grand Slam. As an American, I'm totally jealous that Paris has a judo grand slam but New York does not.

The Alchemist - requires a heavy dose of suspension of disbelief. I read it in my early 20s and very much enjoyed it. now you can look down on my taste. :P
Vanishing World - you've gotten me very interested. I will keep an eye out for a translation.
any recommendations for adult slice of life manga?
i've never read manga, but the little bits i have read i have not liked the fantasy/science fiction/horror/etc aspect of it, which seems very out of character for me since i do read Tolkien and Sanderson, although I always seem to put them lower on my TBR.

As I said, I think The Alchemist has a demographic that it works well with and I definitely believe that the moment in our lives at which we read has a huge influence. Vanishing World is a pretty good idea for the title translation. Better than I could have done. lol Adult slice of life manga... I would say Barakamon. Very cute, funny, endearing.

I've not gotten into "Our Story" yet but I know it'll be an easy read, once I do, and so much of it will be familiar to me, albeit secondhand, from the incidents my ex(Chinese) husband told me and our daughters about his childhood in China, and then in Taiwan. I know my elder daughter will want to read this also, when I am done with it, even though I have not mentioned it yet to her. She will also identify with it in her own way.

こんにちは! 私も消滅世界を読了しました. The world is bizarre but for some reason, it feels really realistic. A lot of Japanese couples become sexless after having children because a spouse is no longer a "lover" therefore having sex with a family is キモ. Some satisfied their sexual need by going to 風俗 which they do not (maybe not all) consider cheating. The idea of husband and wife is incest in the book makes sense.

Yes, the book is firmly rooted in reality! Everything feels so current.
