I do have a question. As someone who wants to do music I’m from Baltimore. We do have a music scene but I feel my voice doesn’t match it and I’m not honestly a fan of the lyrical or instrumental content. I was always a fan of other cities instrumental styles such as New York and Chicago ( No ID and old Kanye west). I agree with the premise of sauce walka because I feel Drake does just hop on a sound without an appreciation for it and genuinely working with artists from Houston and it being mutually beneficial. So my question is do you just work with established artists outside your city and is it enough to just take a sound you were influenced by and add a twist to it? Sorry for the wordiness
It’s not wordy. You explained yourself very well. The one way to be 100 percent sure would be to ask those artists that you plan on working with. But in my opinion if you are coming up alongside those artists it wouldn’t be a problem. Esepcially if you plan on sticking with that sound for a significant amount of time. The only issue I have with what Drake is he used Houston/Texas to sell people on “Drake”. But that’s about as far as his appreciation for Houston goes. It’s a “thanks for that,but I got it from here” vibe.

New York has a lyrical scene even if it’s underground. A lot of people have still heard of Griselda records or guys like roc Marciano and action Bronson. Some cities like Atlanta don’t have a very lyrical scene outside of JID so I think it’s just collaborating out of sheer common subject matter and sound. I feel as art you shouldn’t do anything you don’t love and I love the type of music I write. Yes I was influenced by certain cities but I think everyone gets pass a certain stage of imitation into making your influences into your own works
