- Catherine Full Body is the latest in Atlus' line of "new waifu" enhanced rereleases. In it, we're introduced to Qatherine, also known as Rin. Is she a perfect addition to Atlus' most unique story? or is she an unfitting distraction? And does the new story content make her a Marie or a Miyako?

FINALLY someone that agrees with me. The original story was consistent and tight. The pacing, characters, and atmosphere all factored in to this specific story wirh a clear *balance* in mind. It had some flaws (like both Cat and Kat being unlikeable a lot of the time) but it had this flow down.
Not Fullbody. Rin is a flat character, and his plot breaks the game. If you choose Rin, the other 2 girls get written out of the game completely. Vincent's struggle between them is thrown out. This was a core part of the game, Catherine and Katherine represented freedom and order respectively. By ditching them, you're throwing one of the biggest parts of the game out the window; you're throwing the *game's theme* out the window. The sliding scale that detirmines Vincent's fate is replaced with the "Dont be an asshole" Flower gauge. And then he wont shut up about Rin. RIIIIN! RIIIIN! Every damn floor of the Cathedral. But what else is he going to say? He's already made up his mind. But if you dont pick Rin, he's written out and there's this gaping hole where he used to be.
Between Catherine and Katherine, Rin seems to be the only healthy option. Rin is the only character that Vincent can feel like himself around. So they have scenes where Vincent is just a normal guy and he's truly happy with Rin. But to write that in, they pretend the rest of the game isnt happening. These scenes would be fine if he wasnt having all this other shit going on at the same time.
The real dilemma is "Would you risk true happiness if it challenged your current sexuality." That is an intriguing idea. And it would be great if this game wasnt already something completely different.
All that said, i think its good for Catherine fans who want more content. The new scenes with the same assets, but new voice lines and characters are all wonderful. It's like discovering extra parts of the game you already loved, rather than just playing a sequel.
Thank you for making this review, it felt like closure to have another Catherine fan feel similarly.

I'd argue that Digital Devil Saga was Atlus' first attempt at a more cinematic presentation. Catherine just pushes even further into that side of things.

Omg I'm glad I'm not the only one who had issues w/Rin's route, the 2D scenes, and the lack of any real backstory to Vincent and Katherine's relationship. Primarily I have a bone to pick w/Rin's story bc it could've been 100x better if they actually tried to make it match while making sense. Rin also feels very 1D to me and lacks depth, which I can understand as he had his memories taken away; but I would've liked a little more pizzazz or something.
Then that alien bs made me so mad, I think that ruined the whole thing for me. Like I tried to ignore everything else, but that did not butter my biscuit at all; in fact, it crumbled it. They did my boy dirty, it's like they wanted to rebrand Catherine and make Rin's route different, but they just haphazardly threw it together and bs'd it thinking all those unnecessary twists would make it better. It definitely has a different feel than Catherine and Katherine's route, which was disappointing. I was expecting Rin's route to be like theirs and it wasn't. It feels like once again lgbt+ characters miss the opportunity to have dynamic stories and dimensional character outside of plot devices or shock value.
That being said I don't hate Rin's route and I love Rin, and I love that Vincent found someone who gives him the balance he needs. I just wish they hadn't fumbled Rin's story when it could've added to the greatness that is the Catherine game.

I feel like watching this peaks my urge to write/draw a fanfic version of an alternative Rin route, because I absolutely fell in love with Rin's character as an IDEA, but I absolutely HATE the execution.
Maybe I'll do it, just to give my mind some peace.

@@Macca I know it's been over a year, but Angels being aliens adds more evidence to the Sumerian mythology being canon. Nergal is the god of war & husband to the Queen of the underworld. Ishtar is his sister in law. Boss is Ishtar's ex-husband. The only character missing is Ereshkigal, Nergal's wife, the true ruler of the underworld & Ishtar's more responsible sister.
Now I'm interested in the Classic version.

Damn.... got kinda hyped when you said Rin's a boy, because I'm a real big fan of cute crossdressing characters. Unfortunately, his route seems like a hot mess... though I might still get the game solely for him, ngl. Games with trap routes are pretty damn rare to begin with, not to mention one with a happy ending.

Yeah Rin is the best! Femboys ftw! Steins;Gate also kind of has a "trap ending," but it's arguably the worst out of all of them (none of the endings are explicitly "bad endings" though) and the character in question is female in that timeline due to time travel shinangans. My Darling's Embrace (the non-canon dating sim spinoff) has a lot happier of an ending with him and in that timeline he's actually male. So there's that too. (the character in question is Luka Ushibara)
I'd love a comprehensive understanding of the first Catherine
Many people get frustrated for Rin's true ending (and rightfully so). I totally understand that. But, let's be honest. Catherine was supposed to be an engine test for Persona 5. It really wasn't supposed to be a serious game. That's why I came to the game with low expectations. For the original, it was good for an engine test. For Full Body, it was much more fun to watch AND play. Many people get frustrated because they saw the dark elements and stuck with it. And I understand that (It was literally stated in the opening bit of the game). But, for those who are like me who wanted to have fun and just fuck around, I REALLY ENJOYED FULL BODY. AND MWAH MWAH RIN 👁️👄👁️

Full body has me really conflicted cause I really like Rin and his rout as someone who onced struggled with discovering their heterosexulaity (also he's really cute), I even like the ending (it was so goofy and funny). However, I heavily agree that it feels out of place and does not flow well with the rest of the game. So even though I did like it, it does too much damage to the overall structure of the original. I wish they just made a sequel instead of an enhanced port.
I literally cried at how silly the ending of Rin's story was. like almost all emotional impact was almost gone by the end and I like Rin!!!!!
Thanks for making this video. Catherine is one of my favorite games of all time. The stories are so rich and it's rare I get to hear other people's perspectives on it.
I agree the Rin alien ending didn't fit, but he was my favorite character. Just something about the joy he brought was really refreshing

The original release is still on Steam as "Catherine Classic." And if you're not a fan of puzzle games you can turn on a difficulty mode that skips the puzzles leaving only the story and then you can play it like a high budget visual novel.

I actually like the C/K cutscenes that were added. You don't need that much to add to Katherine and Vincent's backstory. The fact that you actually see them share tender moments together is meant to reinforce the idea that maybe things can be like that again if they both work on themselves. It gives you some more insight on what Vincent might have found attractive in Katherine. Would some more have been nice? Sure. Maybe as opposed to Catherine's horny images, Katherine could have been sending images she took of them together during happier times. But I don't really think the new scenes were bad, per se. It showed you a good amount: Katherine is responsible; she'll help out friends in need but she won't just take shit from people or change herself to please others.
It's the same with Catherine. They didn't need to add more depth, because sometimes there isn't that much depth as to why people like each other. Catherine finds enjoyment in teasing Vincent, and Vincent is flustered but finds it cute. I think both characters got more to them that provides more reason as to why Vincent would like either of them.
I got nothing on Rin, though. She wasn't implemented well at all.
Rin is a guy and uses he/him. Catherine already has a trans character in Erika.
The fucking "would you like to know more" line had me hoping you'd cut to starship troopers
My theory is that the developers confused why people were drawn to the game while making Rin's route. Like making a satirical and «funny» story was their idea of what the audience wanted and failing miserably because of it. I kind of see how it can fit, but also why it's not nearly a good idea based on the real desires of the player base, which they did addressed better with the gameplay changes. Overall, really disappointed at that route; I was in for some laughs, but the main struggles and feeling was not there.
I played the original in 2010 and played Full Body last Year and for some reason I enjoyed Full Body more than the original, even with the problens that Full Body have lol.

Super solid vid. There isn't enough long-form Catherine content. I pretty much agree with all your takes. Classic was very tight and focused on the specific duality represented by the two girls. There's just no way to alter such a carefully constructed system without damaging it somewhat. That said, I like Rin, I like the new content, and I think they ultimately preserved the Catherine-ness of the game. I didn't hate the Rin version of the murder scene as much, but I get what you're getting at. It's not as artistic or effective as the original, but I appreciated how ridiculously over the top it was, and I thought it kind of fit the maximalist, absurdist vibe that FB leans into at times. The new cutscenes had trash animation quality. Like, P5 animation levels of hilarious technical shortcomings. It's fine, but definitely not a plus. I had basically the same reaction to the aliens (yelling WTF at my screen for a minute while laughing hysterically)
However, I came for the anime tiddies but stayed for the puzzles. The QoL changes and content additions make this clearly the definitive edition and overshadow any negatives. Both Rapunzel and Golden Playhouse were literally doubled. Axis Mundi was fixed, and the addition of jump juice to Babel might be sacrilege to absolute pros, but I found it plenty punishing regardless and I think it was a good choice for balance. The new OST tracks are really great too - Silent Sheep is maybe my favorite main menu track in any game.

Maybe I missed it but I think you didn't answer the most debated question: Is Catherine a megaten game?
If anything its an honorary megaten game. Has all the hallmarks of one (demonic imagery, dark story, themes of law vs chaos, multiple endings, etc.).

Old Catherine is a bizarre and experimental story with psycologicol horror element about relationship that achieve a good characterization of all is characters.

I definitely agree. I became a fan of the original game with its gameplay, story, and presentation. So much so that it became one of my favorite games of all time. While I never picked up Full Body, I knew I would not get same exact experience I had with the original game, so I just watch the new cutscenes online. But if Full Body was my first experience with Catherine, I would have been disappointed with the story, and it is simply because of the inclusion of Rin.
Rin is one of the biggest flaws I have with Full Body’s continuity. Rin feels shoehorned in this new continuity not only for the sake of having a third love interest, but for the sake of adding themes that didn’t belong in the original game.
To anyone who wants Full Body to be their first exposure to Catherine, I strongly recommend for the first playthrough, get at least one of the multiple endings from the original game, whether it is from lovers, cheaters, or freedom. After Rin completely disappears for the rest of the plot, newcomers would appreciate the narrative of the original game the way older fans had with their first playthrough a decade ago. Then if they are curious about the Rin route, they can see how the narrative differs from the original story, and see why the Rin route is so flawed imo.
Bottom line, there is a simple fix to Full Body’s story: just have two separate campaigns. Give players( old and new) the choice to either go through the original story without Rin’s inclusion, or see how Rin’s inclusion alters the continuity of the original story.

Welp, at least I am no longer upset that PC is left with only the original. The only story parts that are better are that we get to see more reasons why Katherine and Vincent meant something to each other, and we finally get an ending I feel is really nice (the Catherine wish ending). Other than that, the gameplay is the only thing better
31:24 this is how I felt about all of the supernatural god stuff, including what was in the original. It would have been stronger without it. It’s just a weird quirk of atlus games/jrpgs that I don’t care for.
As someone who doesn't mind Full Body that much, I find this review very interesting. I do understand a lot of your points and I do agree that the alien thing was weird and the worst part of the game imo. However, I think a huge flaw of Rin is him running away after Vincent slaps him despite making up to him. I feel like I'm the only one who felt genuinely frustrated as in "Wow, this character is making a pretty insensitive decision." Because not only did Rin put the other sheep in danger but he also broke Vincent's heart by breaking off their pure and true friendship as the person who understood and supported him the most. They both needed each other and I really wished that they would make up without actually deciding to romance Rin.
Considering I hate the majority of the asshole cast, Rin was a nice reprieve and my all time favorite in the game but I tend to like the pure, sweetheart character the best in a cast full of unlikeable characters. I think they may have added him in there due to the controversy with the two other atherines being too unlikeable. I also think that being an angel could be a reason why Rin is so pure.

I am kinda happy that yes they did amazing with representation of trans people rim and Erica, but you also right when I was 17 playing the original It spoke to on emotionally but the new seens with rin really do take a different time compared to the original.

I think lots of people see aliens as angels. Demons are just fallen angels- so... also aliens- that just use their power for evil. I don't know. The whole game is wack tho... I only played full body, but I feel the same way about allot of what is said here.

One more thing, rin being a boy would probably be a an actually good idea if it was 10 years ago? Nowadays lgbtq trope is more visible in media, and even if it's not about lgbtq, there's already "if there is a hole, there is a way" meme and trap fetish amongst otaku, so vincent's mental conflict about rin being boy feel kinda outdated (and for non human choice, catherine already exists). Not that rin is a bad representation tho.
It's understandable that Erika would refer to Rin as she, even if Rin was eventually revealed to be male. Rin dressed in a feminine manner, spoke in a feminine manner, stood, moved, and behaved in a stereotypically feminine manner. As a trans woman, Erika of all people wouldn't disregard all of that because of what Rin had under her dress.

What the actual fuck is Rin's path? Lmao. I'm so glad you made a video on this! I never would have picked Rin's path regardless because, well, ya know... he's a dude, but this takes a game that already pushes the limits of ridiculous and cranks it up to 50... when the max is 10. I remember the first time I saw Catherine get stabbed and that whole cutscene I was literally holding my breath. I couldn't agree with you more on the Day 8 alternative totally missing the mark. The original caught me so off guard that I'll never forget it, that slasher remake was awful. Psychological fear is way stronger than visual fear. Especially in an anime video game that I expect to throw me some curveballs.

What kinda annoys me is the fact that Rin seems way more like a trans girl and a guy, and feels weird and unnatural to be a guy for Rin. Also the relationship seems the happiest and most cheesy out of the three and tho I like it, makes me wonder why making it so different even at that level.
Overall it couldve been so much better but they went reeeeally far ahead and made a completely weird route. It has been a bittersweet experience for me, I liked some parts and despised other parts.
