Hello Garrett, I have been playing around with my Longmill for a month now and have done a few interesting experiments including dept mapping from photos and activating powder coating with the laser in an etch (To ultimately be able to create color laser engravings). I am currently filling machine time with projects handed down from people within my inner circle. They just have to pay for material costs. The other part of the deal is that I am free to experiment (wildly). This way, I get a feeling what people are looking for, I get to play around, gaining experience and I get products out to homes where they might generate new clients knocking on my door. The projects and experiments differ wildly, but one thing is clear and it's what you are saying in this video - People want things from the heart.- (Point for Garrett.)) I have not found my niche yet and am excited with every experiment I am engaging. My first unintentional sell was a 3d etch in/on a piece of scrap pine that miserably failed (I achieved zero of my set experiments outcomes.) It was meant to be a 3D carve, using a gray scale depth map, with a laser-etching on top. I used a photo I made from a neighbor on an old Ford tractor he drives around when working the fields. I aimed for a smooth carve but didn't have a ball-head so I used a 60 deg instead after roughing with a 1/4 flat, just to see what would happen. Shredding happened! But since many hours had gone in the carve, I started the laser etch anyhow. It came out surprisingly well. My Girlfriend posted it on Facebook, cause the rough quality worked pretty well for this particular picture and the next moment she got a message the neighbor wanted to buy it. I wanted to give it to him but he didn't want to hear any of that, so I earned my first beef on a failure. Without Facebook, it would have ended up in the stove. (Point for Garrett.) A few days later that neighbor came over, asking if I could do a laser etch from a photo with his grandchildren. I think I can manage. I am sooo enjoying the process of cnc-ing and all that connects to it. It's like a dream.
Spamming Eddie, you are definitely off to the right start brother! Making mistakes and working your way though them is the best way to figure out how your machine works and to make amazing projects. Congrats on your first sale! I am excited to hear about where your CNC journey takes you brother!

As someone who is just starting with CNC this video was very interesting and really put into perspective what to look forward to and how to go about getting ready to start a CNC business. Thanks for taking the time to share with everyone your experiences and the pitfalls to watch out for in starting the business.
Hi Mike. I'm glad you found some nuggets in this. I'd like to share a little thought with you. Don't use the word "can't". Instead, decide you will get there. Then you will.
This is a great message. I agree with human nature regarding personalization and emotional buying. I am challenged to let buyers know they can personalize things. Customers tend to be visual and just buy based on what they see regardless of any signage you have that you can personalize/customize. How do we overcomes that barrier?
MH, make a few personalized examples. If you do last names for your personalization, make a few examples with your friends and family's last name on it. It would help the customer see what the end product will look like while making it clear they are purchasing a personalized product.
Garrett, thank you for your videos. Making the step over from hand crafting to CNC Routing has been a challenge, and I am fairly decent using computers. You have taken a LOT of guess work out fo the process for me and it has been greatly appreciated. I hope to start doing vids of my own, in the future, to share knowledge as well.

Everything you said is true, but you are simplifying things as they really can be. I am 45 years old and I have been in business for 25 years. I studied and was in business at the same time. I went through a lot. The difference between you and me is that I live and work in a small country in Eastern Europe.
Hi Boban. You are right. It is never as easy as it looks and can never be explained in the right way. Yet, it is always human nature to be liked. the foundation to like others has to be within our nature.
@@IDCWoodcraft Hi Garrett, yes I ve been a bit quiet but I m always in the background and enjoy all your videos. I m going to a CnC school now, 15 months of intense training to give me a good feel about CnC, it will help me decide witch router I will buy, witch direction I m gonna go and hopefuly a lot more. The jobs/salaries in Belgium arent attractive if you compare to the cost of life so I deffenly gotta do something to be able to put some passion in it without beeing under financial pressure.
hello garrett, i am looking into purchasing a cnc machine and start a little business out of my home. i have a shop and property and have some money to invest in some machinery. i was looking at a cnc plasma cutter but i do like woodworking better. i am a sheetmetal worker by trade. HVAC to be exact. i enjoy your videos
Hi Vemon. I would say think about specifically you'd like to make money in, and what niche, You are super early in the game so that is excellent. Let the market you want to serve determine what machine to go after.
I'm an accomplished wood worker & pen turner and price my stuff where i make $10 to $15 on each item i sell. But i'm a beginner with CNC, and have no idea how to price a carving or a laser project! Any tips or advice would help alot! By the way, you've given me so many ideas i cant put it all down on paper!
Audio is sounding nice! I see you picked up a lav mic. Thanks for the business info! This is awesome stuff. I’m still waiting on my machine. My brain is all over the place with ideas though!
Hello again, Lee! Good to see you again. Actually, it's the same mic. Had to do some adjustments (thanks to your comment). Yes, us CNC'ers have loads of ideas. When is that puppy supposed to get there?
@@IDCWoodcraft Hoping it ships in the next week or two! It will be here in Canada within 2-3 days once it ships so it will be go time. I have been working on getting my garage organized, building a table for it and getting my gcode files prepared. I already have a paying project lined up, it’s the reason I bought the machine. Will greatly improve my efficiency!
I'm new in cnc. Just got a Shapeoko xxl. Got 3 bits up cut, down cut little bit to letter. I love your videos. I had to stop purchasing things for my cnc because my wife found out she has breast cancer. I hope to get more bits someday but for now doctor get paid first. Thanks for all the great information.
Hi Don. I totally get the change in priority. Cancer is so scary. It has been closer to me more times than I care to say. Patience and faith. My thoughts are with both of you.
hey Garrett how do i take a 3d carving and chenge the wording in it . also i loved to be your student but i have to wait till i retire 3 years sorry but i love your yourtube
Paul, I'm glad to be a part of your cnc journey in any capacity! This question is a little too tricky to answer over a comment, but you can schedule a one on one and I can help you solve this problem with the 3D carving wording!
LG, I recommend posting your projects online via social media like Facebook. You can also look into local craft fairs, farmers markets, etc. to sell you products too!
I have a shapeoko xxl 3, I have a problem that carbide can't seem to help me with. When I am cutting a path with raised letters on a 10x24 board the relief on the bottom is very bad. It looks as though the bit raises up in the curved areas of the cut. I have replaced my belts,v wheels, checked my tram, made sure machine is level/square, you can see where the imperfections are going to be in the tool path display. Wish I knew how to send you a picture or a copy of the program. Please send help if you can,
Just came across your videos..wow! Very detailed. I'm really enjoying them. Question, if I sent you a picture of something would you be able to advise me of the right kind of equipment to buy? Or even if there is a machine that can do it? It would be so helpful. Thank you in advance.
Hello from Mexico, I am following your channel and I am learning too much, I would like to ask you an advice, always when I try to carve small text in MDF, some internal parts of the characters gone out, I have seen that you carve some small letters in MDF with very good results, do you have a video about this? Thanks and regards
I got my cnc to supplement income after being laid off due to slow business and lack of contracts. By time I got up n going good covid shut everything down everyone stopped buying outa fear of how long without work then everyone started getting machines for the same reason. Now to be competitive gotta keep prices so low can't really make anything especially if you use sites like etsy. By time paying all the fees ect you make nothing if u raise cost then u don't get work. If u use social media like fb ect some work come depending on area but I dont use FB. Most of my works been word of mouth. Just gotta find what people want really.
Hi BG. We need to talk. There is a market for you and that market will pay you well. What are soem of the movers and shakers of the items you have sold. what was it specifically about them? I do suggest looking into FB. there are many many groups and some of your products will fit those groups.

Hello Garrett, being extremely new to the CNC world, getting ready to order my longmill 30 x 30, do you recommend the vcarve pro software, I'm planning on ordering your starter kit of bits as well. Are there any other recommendations for asscorries, as far as bits, and the vacuum attachment, or any other options I should get. There is not a video that I've seen that talks about, hooking up the computer, loading software and attaching it to the long mill CNC, do you have a video on hooking up the complete system ? Thank you for you time. The web site for the longmill, lists many options to order,
Hi Al. When you order your Longmill, be sure to get the touch probe and dust shoe. It works excellent. You can use a simple shop vac with it. I do not have a video that take one through the setup process. It is actually quite easy if you use the gsender software provided by longmill. Here's a link to that page: bit.ly/3y6rnwg I am working on these aspects so bear with me. Did I answer your questions? when you order your longmill, can you use this link...it is an affiliate link. Or you can just tell them Garrett sent you lol. Thanks sienci.com/product/longmill-idc-woodcraft/?ref=IDCWoodcraft
@@IDCWoodcraft thank you ever so much for your help, I bought you a cup of coffee 😂 I can't tell you how much you are appreciated, like I said I'm my long winded message to you, your a lifesaver, and a life changer !!
Hi Andrew. They are trademarked, yes. However, it is also free advertising. Tell a loyal fan to stop promoting a product and watch what happens to loyalty. The only time an organization will pursue is if you are making millions from it. Of course, you'll know you'll have to have rights to do that ahead of time. Look around. People are doing it all over the place. Etsy is a great place to test yuor question.
Hi I like your videos you make thank you for doing them. I'm a bit stuck at the moment maybe you could help. I sold my car today it had to much work needing doing on it. But I'm interested in getting a cnc machine, now my mind is telling me to get one, as I have a chance of making some money from it in the future. And put off getting another car for a while. As my thinking is a car will just keep costing me money, where a cnc machine has the potential to make me money down the road of course. What do you think I should do? Thanks
Thank you so much for your reply means alot. CNC it is then. Please keep up the awsome work you are doing on the videos as I'm going to need a lot of learning lol. And once again thank you.
"new" and "improved" both most profitable words, who doesn't want to try something new, or even if they didn't like, improved, it might be better this time...lol
Hey Garrett I’m going today to purchase a laptop so I can start my new cnc adventure and am wonder if I need to have a really fancy laptop? I already have an older one that will stay next to my cnc and be used to just run the machine but I need something to create all of my cad files with and then obviously convert them to G code. What do you recommend for a laptop?
Hi Dave. I use an HP Pavilion for my designs. Works great. This is the computer I use → amzn.to/3KUBz2I I also have a dedicated laptop for the CNC router. You can pretty much use any inexpensive or old machine if you decide to do it this way. Do you want a recommendation for this?
I would say it is broader than making personalized items. That can be, and has been made by hand. What a Cnc does is save labor and time and adds replication. It is efficient once you have the first one. I will not be making any personalized items. I will be making utility items for your garage, car, house.
@@IDCWoodcraft Salute to you Garrett, and THANK YOU so much for all the efforts and time you put to help us and explain everything in such a great and an amazing way. believe me when I watch your videos and watch other cnc youtubers videos I could see the big difference that makes me love your material, your simplicity and your passion more than any others.
@@IDCWoodcraft You are taking creative license for something a machine does all you do is program it and put the wood in. Just like a publisher taking credit for a book just because he edited and published it. A woodworker works with his hands thus handmade. Thank You
@@robinhood3112 Thank you for your insights They are 2 different crafts...and yes, CNC is a craft. However, I do appreciate your sentiment. In that perspective, CNC is not woodworking by hand. Yet it is very creative. It is not plug-and-play. Much thought goes into it. Overall, CNC'ers do not consider themselves woodworking craftsmen in your definition. I will say to their defense...it does allow them to create when they do not have the skill of a woodworker. there is no reason to think they are in 'competition' with the woodworking craft in that way, nor is there a need to declare what they can call themselves. If they want to claim they are woodworkers, I celebrate that because they are being creative. Be an encourager.

Very good points & advice Garrett. Guess I am guilty of not following some.
Hey brther. We're all guitly of it. But you found your groove ina very simple product.
Great advice
JoasFillipe, glad you liked this one brother!
Very Good video I think I have a few of these points nailed. It was good to hear someone confirm my ideas.
Mallet, I love hearing when people know they've got marketing methods understood. What types of projects do you make and sell?
Anything you want at any type of level that the custommer wants sounds like poetry
Hello Bart. Been a while since I heard from you. Yes, you can make anything you want, as long as the customer is emotionally involved enough!!
Let the market you want to serve determine what machine to go after.
its endless cant wait to get started if my machine ever gets here, thanks.
Fred...It is so close!!!
What machine are you getting Fred?
the onefinity
Good choice about Onefinity man 😍💪
wow, thx for share you experience that make me think different at productions point, thx so much, from brasil
Hi Gabrial. It does require more thinking for sure!
Hi Kelso. Tips in a Yt comment wouldn't fit. But the best tip I can give is find a niche and make your products for that.
This question is a little too tricky to answer over a comment, but you can schedule a one on one and I can help you solve this problem with the 3D carving wording!
outside of friends and family, how do you go about finding customers when first starting out?
LG, I recommend posting your projects online via social media like Facebook. You can also look into local craft fairs, farmers markets, etc. to sell you products too!
Garrett where can I get Your bit sets finally getting my machine together!!
Hi John.. you can get it right here

Please send help if you can,
Hi Dan. If I'm understanding you correctly, you might want to watch this video → ruclips.net/video/tykj6Nn-ysM/видео.html
Just came across your videos..wow! Very detailed. I'm really enjoying them. Question, if I sent you a picture of something would you be able to advise me of the right kind of equipment to buy? Or even if there is a machine that can do it? It would be so helpful. Thank you in advance.
Hi Yvette. Thank you regarding the channel. Yes, send it to me with an explanation of what you want to do.
Hi Garrett I bought 3 drill bits and download the cribbage board files but only got one page and no files
Hey Larry. I sent you the link in the other comment
Hello from Mexico, I am following your channel and I am learning too much, I would like to ask you an advice, always when I try to carve small text in MDF, some internal parts of the characters gone out, I have seen that you carve some small letters in MDF with very good results, do you have a video about this?
Thanks and regards
Hi Daniel. The issue you are having is with nodes. Watch this video. It is a little long. However, when I get to nodes, you will understand
@@IDCWoodcraft most everything iv done has been custom made signs split letter monograms things like that all made to order for that more special one of a kind item. I got away from fb years ago and have not missed it one bit. Just too much junk n drama there.
@@IDCWoodcraft BG here again. This is my channel I do everything on. You can see some of the projects iv done so far. Got few more I'll be doing in the next few days as well
Hello Garrett, being extremely new to the CNC world, getting ready to order my longmill 30 x 30, do you recommend the vcarve pro software, I'm planning on ordering your starter kit of bits as well.
Here's a link to that page: bit.ly/3y6rnwg
I am working on these aspects so bear with me.
You talk about a niche such cars or military. Aren't all of those logo's copyrighted? How do you get around that?
Thanks
Hey Game. Well, you are definitely thinking in lines of an entrepreneur. Car is a liability. CNC is an asset when it starts making money.
Thank you so much for your reply means alot. CNC it is then. Please keep up the awsome work you are doing on the videos as I'm going to need a lot of learning lol. And once again thank you.
@@gamecaster5002 you're welcome my friend
"new" and "improved" both most profitable words, who doesn't want to try something new, or even if they didn't like, improved, it might be better this time...lol
Definitely 2 marketing words that work.
This is the computer I use → amzn.to/3KUBz2I
I also have a dedicated laptop for the CNC router.
Hi Mike. Thanks for sharing this. There is no end to what one can make.
Thank the lord! Thank the lord you stopped the music on the podcast!
lol. I didn't know until a couple other people said something. No more music.
👍👍👍
Hi brave. Thank you again!
I think you know how many materials i've ruined and time i've spent until i gave my friends their door sign 😂😂😂
Oh Orsa, I do know. But you finally got something out there. An amazing sign of growth in skill!

TheUnofficialMaker, I'll have to take a look brother thanks!
You're not just talking to people who want to what a CNC or Craftsman's you're talking to anybody who wants to run any kind of service business.
Hey John. Yes. that is beside the point. Many who want to get into this don't have a lot of business acumen. They still need to learn anyway.
Just don't call yourself a woodworker and your projects handmade
Hi Robin. Why not?
@@IDCWoodcraft You are taking creative license for something a machine does all you do is program it and put the wood in. Just like a publisher taking credit for a book just because he edited and published it. A woodworker works with his hands thus handmade. Thank You
@@robinhood3112 I think there are a lot of digital artists who would disagree. 1s and 0s is just another medium with which to create.
@@IDCWoodcraft I applaud your thoughts on the subject. You are one of a select few that can sit down and have an intelligent conversation without getting upset. We are both artisans in our own right. I am going to watch your videos and try to get a better understanding. I'm just an old dinosaur.
Thank you

Thanks!
