They are but it is called Hamachi
Yeah thats how it works, it's needed for nearly every game on steam, if not all if you want to host a game with friends

No, that's not "how it works". It's only needed if you don't know how to port forward which a large portion of the steam users don't know how to do apparently. =.=
CombatWars True, but most youtubers use hamachi so they don't leak their actual IP address to the public by accident. That would be a big issue to deal with.
