No that’s the culture of those who get things done, East coast is the home of the immigrants!! They talk to you the way they grew up! Everything started on the East and on the West they are just entitled fakers!! It’s a lot worse to pass somebody by when they need help instead of being helped but with tough love! The Bible is truth. Please take your salvation seriously. If you haven’t already, please read at least three books of the Bible, Genesis Mathew and one book you chose yourself. As you do this, you must remember to put Jesus Christ’s teachings into action in your life. That’s the key that makes it all click. Start with forgiveness. Parents are easiest. They’ve loved you. Look inside for those grievances you still cling onto and truly let them go. Forgive genuinely from within. Doing that shows God something important. It’s an act of faith and love. Please, break down before Jesus Christ and ask for forgiveness. It’s not too late. God loves you.

Originally from the East Coast, but grew up in the lower Midwest. What I've noticed is that whether or not someone will help you often has more to do with their socioeconomic class than it does location. In my experience, some of the best helpers tend to drive old beaters and rusted out pickup trucks. When you're stuck on a lonely highway at 3am, old Jim Bob will wake up his buddy at the junk yard to help find you a working alternator to get you home. His buddy will even help install it without charge. Those of us who have experienced strife have more practical empathy for those in need. We express solidarity through action.

Just wave back. If you don't its suspicious. In the South, we generally wave to everyone. The further you get into the rural areas the more waving there is. At some point, when you get deep enough into redneck territory we even wave to oncoming traffic. I have no idea who they are, but we wave to each other.
If 2 redneck dudes meet in oncoming traffic they usually throw up the 1 finger wave. Jeep drivers are weird and either wave with 2 fingers or their whole hand. If you drive a lifted truck you generally wave to other trucks like yours. We don't wave to Prius drivers though.

As someone originally from Minnesota but who has lived in San Francisco for many years, my experience has been that strangers are, on the whole, very friendly in Calfornia, but it’s sort of skin deep. It’s much harder here to make real friends. Of course this is a generalization, nothing is 100%. I have experienced-repeatedly-in New York City, strangers going out their way to help me in one way or another. Perhaps quickly and even brusquely, but still helped, unasked. One time a woman-and at night, too-saw me struggling with a very heavy piece of luggage on a street in Brooklyn. She insisted on helping me to carry it for two blocks. I was astounded. That would be much, much less likely to happen in SF. Of course I also have had dramatic encounters with criminals and lunatics in NYC, but both NYC and SF are cities of extremes.

This is so fucking true. First time I went to NY, I took the train from the airport going to stay at West End Ave around 82nd / 86th street. Conductor didn't announce that the train stops around that area and the door's about to close... there's this angry looking black woman whom you didn't wanna mess with and I was with my friend and we were like oh no we missed it, she asked us where were going and said 82/86 and she's like this train dont stop there and opened the doors, stopped the train and scolded the conductor for not announcing. And she helped us which train to take and we were so grateful and everyone else helped us with our luggage and she was like FUCK THIS SHIT FUCKING CONDUCTOR DIDNT ANNOUNCE AND YALL ARE ABOUT TO OVERSHOOT YER FUCKING STOP. We was so scared and was so grateful all we ever said was Thanks so much and bowed. I love NY and I love New Yorkers.

Fun conversation. Present. They look you in the eye when you talk with them. I found the opposite to be true in over 30+ years living in L.A. No eye contact. Poor communication skills. Looking away. Too afraid and or angry to have a conversation or help. Out to lunch. Such a drag.

genuinely, I think part of it is the way the cities are built. Eastern cities are generally a lot older and I think they encourage a lot more community than the super spread out cities of the West Coast, so everybody's a bit more insular but the proximity to diverse neighborhoods means you're generally more accepting of outsiders even if you're still somewhat suspicious.
this is in contrast to somewhere like LA, where neighborhoods are split up by super highways and you basically only talk to people in your income bracket and demographic.
I can't say anything about texas because I don't know what the hell is going on in houston. I feel like that's mostly a highway junction with some houses.

When I was a kid in ky it was me, my mom and sister- we were little. It was raining hard and in the parking lot my mom's car got stuck in a pot hole that she couldn't see bc that area was covered in water. A man and his teenage son got out of their car in the pouring rain and lifted my mom's car and pushed it out of the pot hole. I'll never forget the selflessness and kindness of these strangers.

Haha, that reminds me of an experience I had working construction for this italian guy. So we did some work for this latino family on their house, poor area of town, you could tell they didn't have much money.
A week later we come back to finish up, and my boss and the family end up arguing over the amount, or getting paid or something. I couldn't understand half of it because I speak neither spanish nor italian, lol.
Well I guess they finally work it out, because the next thing you know their feeding all of us, passing out bowls of rice and beans. I wasn't hungry (just had lunch), and it was the most dry, bland rice and beans I've ever had, but you know, I'm trying to finish it because I'm in someone else's house and they've just given us food and it would be rude to reject it.

Honestly, a lot of this can be explained by car culture. People in California drive everywhere, you don't really interact with anyone. You are cut off from the world. So there's really no sense of community, especially for the transplants. It's just a bunch of isolated apartments where people walk to their car, drive to where they need to go, and drive back to their apartment. If anything, you see other people as an annoyance because they mean more traffic.
