      Well sadly that version was, what was to become the thing with almost every modern adaptation/remake of movies.
      Bad directors with no real passion and understanding towards the source and horrible writing.
      Like for example, with a working helicopter and Thing on it, the movie would’ve ended right there. Or where the one women mutated on the other, totally pointless, Ms maincharacter was totally alone, easiest assimilation, but no, not with that writing.

      @@miamibrando3471 The 2011 film was trash.
      They changed The Thing from a paranoia-striking insidious infiltrator to just another stupid boodyman running after you in the dark jump-scare movie.
      The writing is horrible, there are no memorable scenes, no character development and the acting is terrible.
      In the 82' movie we get half an hour only for character development and all the characters have their unique things, shapes and personalities. In the 2011 the character development time was literally cut from the movie.
      The 82' Thing was smart, smart enough to frame people and smart enought o build a flying saucer smart. The 2011 one is a retard. It goes into a 30+ second transformation stage in front of a potential victim, allowing the victim to run and alert everybody so The Thing gets killed.
      The creature is also utterly incoherent in the 2011 movie. One moment it splits into several smaller things to fight more people at the same time, the other second (on the Spaceship, in the final scenes) it can't get the protagonist because the protagonist ran into a space-ship vent and The Thing is too big (apparently it forgot it can split into multiple entities).
      The main character has utterly 0 charisma and all it can do is put on a concerned face like it's constipated or something. And this is pretty much the case with everyone in the movie. In the original people acted very natural because they spent much time together and the script wasn't spoiled to them beforehand. In the 2011 movie everyone acts like the got a huge carrot up their ass and that's about it as far as acting is concerned.
      I won't even begin with the massive plotholes (such as the crew supposedly being made out of scienties but taking 0 preventive measures agaisnt alien-pathogens, despite it being known even artefacts/thousands-of-years-old-corpses FROM EARTH can be very dangerous... or using A GIANT HOUSE-WORK DRILL ON THE ALIEN IN THE ICE-BLOCK).
      I'm glad you liked the movie but please don't tell us it's good.
      If you liked it, you liked it because your standards were very low.

    • @KrisKringle2
      @KrisKringle2 2 года назад +2

      @@Kriegerherz15 Well, the reality would be, with a creature of the Thing's capabilities, all it would need to do would be to split off a bunch of mouse-sized critters, instruct them to wait until people are asleep, then attack them, and zap, no humans. Or emit spores that infect the humans, or mosquito-like things that can inject infection, ad infinitum, just like in the alien universe. There's really no way the earth's biome doesn't become thingized once it surreptitiously infects a human. But where's the story in that? My bugaboo is how much I disliked the majority of the stuff that went into the sanders and juliette Things. Big jagged random teeth and random sprouting tentacles all over and stretched tendon-muscle tissue. It borrowed too much from later-day survival-sci-fi-horror video games and comics, even anime, and not for the better IMHO. It's just not the same philosophy used in the '82 thing. In that one there was a certain economy and fit-for-immediate-purpose 'rational' to how and what the Thing morphed. In the '11 version it was just throw in the kitchen sink and do overkill. Yah, one could chalk it up to the Thing taking a different approach as it gained experience with humans, but storywise '11's MO leaves me cold. The back story with the Thing's escape from its capture pod, killing the other specimens, and the fights with the Pilot species would have been really interesting to me, but I can see, even though it's somewhat circular, the logic in not wanting tho throw money into that if they don't think the movie is going to make a profit or even break even, or somehow drives audience appreciation down (or both). Sh*t.

    • @Lumibear.
      @Lumibear. 5 лет назад +15

      They were always intended to be CGI enhanced a little though, so without anything at all they probably wouldn’t work neither, plus there is a lost art to selling stuff like this to the audience, like specialised lighting, framing, reversing or speeding up the shot, and 80s style editing where you get an A to B motion in one shot, then a cut, set up the next motion, repeat, etc. it’d be tricky to ‘convert’ the raw footage at this stage.
      I’d like to see it tried too, though, I mean heck, what people can do at home now with editing and CGI has advanced so far, that if someone could see their way to accidentally release all the required scenes as filmed, I dare say some fan could do something about adjusting and inserting them into a fan edit of the movie.

      @fuck you (lol)
      In the original ending, the Sander-Thing ran from the camp back to the ship. Kate and Carter chase it but their flamethrower is out of fuel so they use the Snowcat’s fuel when they get to the ship, noticing Sander’s tracks are becoming less human and more alien along the way. Carter/Kate are separated while looking for the Thing and a chase puts all three in the Cockpit. Kate threatens the Alien-Thing with a Thermite grenade and Carter chooses to burn it after brief hesitation. They go back to the snowcat and Kate takes the flamethrower to refuel it before noticing Carter’s missing earring, commenting on how she knew he was human the whole time. He reaches for the wrong ear and she burns him, knowing she just finished off her ride and fuel for it...
      This is a brief summary of the original ending, I might’ve missed someThings;)

    looks and effects one can only extrapolate any failures with the end product

    I've said it before, I'll say it again: You guys did a great job with this movie, I loved it! I will never forget the wonderful, horrific doom I felt when I realized what was happening in the Adams-Edvard scene ... :-) All this artwork shows you and your team were real Thing-fans, and the movie benefited for it.
    What I wouldn't give to see or even read the script of how the Pilot scene would have played out. I really love all the different designs you had for it, and the one you landed on. I understand there were reasons, but it's a real shame it never made it into the movie.
    I also like your drawings of the Juliette-Thing. The drawings make it's arms look much more flexible and wild than the hook-arms in the movie. Very mean looking! And the eye-stalk thing was haunting. Very reminiscent of the Norris-Thing :-)
    A Question. I saw a mutation a couple times that didn't show up in the film. Kind of like a row of sea anemones bursting from some poor soul's face and head. What was the idea behind those? Spit acid/dna? A row of muscley mouths?

      I saw a video once where they tossed around ideas for what a sequel could entail. A sex-scene with the Thing would be terrifying. But my favorite idea on that video by far was one where at the end of the movie, after all the run around and effort of the main characters to contain the Thing creature, you learn that the Thing has already taken over the world, and maintains the global status-quo, keeping earthlings corralled in ignorance and only eating, at its leisure, at need or whim.

      The UFO thing is one of the things the director said was an intentional change, because they reasoned that there's no way the norwegians would have enough explosives to cleanly uncover the giant UFO without also damaging it. In fact, the characters try exactly that in the original 'Who Goes There?' novella and end up destroying the UFO. :P
      The guy on the chopper was given away in the trailer (as were all of the Thing-outs - the marketing was kind of garbage). Without seeing the trailer, it's a pretty effective fake-out because the other guy is acting all weird and shaking and stuff.
      The Americans surviving the crash is meant to be unbelievable, and the other characters don't believe it - they think the Americans are Things.
      In short, I think we'll have to agree to disagree.

    TBH even the finished practical designs were a bit meh. The only perticuarly scary one was what was supposed to be split face and they changed its "back story", all the rest just ended up looking like resident evil tyrant knock offs :/ Nothing "thing" about it no randomness or chaotic mutation its all video game monsters....... which makes even more sense when you find out they used a TON of scrapped concepts from the unmade Thing 2 game ((the split man, the chopper scene, even the woman were all rehashed ideas from that game)). There was nothing creative or original from the start, and the CGI just ruined it even more.

    I'll be honest, I'm not a big fan of the 2011 version, as it makes a lot of mistakes in the script. Like, for example, repeating scenes from the Carpenter film and resulting in errors in continuity and the characters being uninteresting, hateful and generic. The thing itself became a generic horror movie monster. Aside from the CGI of the film being an offense compared to Rob Bottin's incredible work. But, looking at the effort and the countless ideas they had for the thing, despite not liking this kind of insectoid look, you can see that they were well committed to having their own identity.

    There must have been a reason why they replaced it with cgi. If you have good practical effects there is no reason to spend more money going over it all with cgi... something doesn't sit right here and I'd love to know what really happened.

    Poor movie, and all the great real actual effect people working on it..... sucks they were just, used as a CGI build-off.... stupid director doesn't know what's good for movies for the fans.

    These are all amazing designs, and some of them would have been great for the movie, but others are way too overdesigned for the style of the Thing. Like the monster at the end of the movie.
