When Wilbert Awdry stated in the book that ''he had to push empty trucks into one siding, and pull out full ones from another'' he was briefly noting that Thomas had brought the empty trucks to be loaded up with the lead being mined out, before taking away the loaded ones he had brought to the mine empty on a preceding visit. Basically a cycle commonplace in rail freight operations. The _teasing_ is what the narrator says happened earlier that day, which occurred at the beginning of "Down the Mine". The actual incident between Gordon and the ditch is said to have happened at some other time before then, on a different day. So the episode version of "Paint Pots and Queens" is only set on the same day as "Down the Mine", while "Off the Rails" happened before both on a different day.

Also, in Paint Pots And Queens, Henry telling James he can't climb hills is a direct reference to Leaves, but it's lost on the viewer at this point because there's no visual flashback or other reference to indicate this.

Absolutely. Series 3 was made up of original stories by Allcroft and Mitton (some of which were adapted from magazine stories by Andrew Brenner) and Awdry's stories, although a lot of them were so far off the original stories that you wouldn't notice if you weren't a fan.

The engines didn’t run on electricity through the rails though, they were entirely remote controlled.
