As a blind musician, and fairly new Nord user, I can’t tell you how helpful this video was. To be able to hear the different uprights side by side, and to be able to reference the chapter titles to see which sample was which, was such a big help. When scrolling through the sounds in the Nord, obviously I can start to recognise certain samples and get to know where abouts they are, but I don’t always know the name of the sample to reference later. This video really helps with that, because I can use the chapters to reference the different samples. Thank you Jack!
I hate to admit, when I first got a Nord, I thought Why would I ever want to use an upright, obviously grands are better and clearer. And now I find I turn to the uprights more often than not. There is just more variety and more character, with these little imperfections that make you feel like you’re playing a real piano rather than a glossy preset. For my money, Amber has the most clarity, but when I want something more evocative, the Blue Swede and Rain pianos have this homespun handmade quality that adds a certain emotional poignancy, like you’re in a dingy roadhouse at 3am with Tom Waits plinking away on the piano in between puffs of a cigarette.
I love the sound of an upright piano, I think it takes me back to school assemblies! But they have such an unique real analogue sound... even the sampled/modelled patches sound more analogue-y than any of the grand patches
Since Nord released the Felt and the Pearl Upright's, they been my go to sounds for most things, and I absolutely love them! They absolutely nail their upright sounds every single time :D
I play the Piano 5 at my church. After trying a handful of the upright patches that came loaded on it, I've settled on the Amber for most applications. I also use the Mellow and Felt when the situation requires. I'm considering downloading the Pearl to round out the selection.
I haven't messed with the Pearl Upright yet, but my two current favorite uprights are the Felt and the Bambino. The Bambino Upright has the most character of all the conventional upright sounds and it doesn't sound chintzy or shallow, when I think of an upright piano it's exactly the sound I want. The Felt Upright is just hauntingly beautiful.
Off topic, but Jack, can you please compare the UAD Waterfall B3 to the IK Hammond B3-X and just for fun to the Nord. Preferably before the end of March when the UAD sale ends. Thanks!
I started my learning on a old school piano , gifted to us, and consquently used to bash away on it, and got all the bad habits that come with that. So when i got my nord i was really deflated becuase everything was far too bright, and didnt sound right. The sounds are beautiful , but not what i wanted , they are for nice piano, where as i want to play 'Horrible Rock n Roll' ! So thanks so much for bring to attnetion the felt, its obviously what we had on the old school piano and the sound i craved. Been playingit all night since downloaded it. To say i am pleased is an under statement, the nord is now perfect for me,. and the 2 bands i play in, one surf, one 60s rnb . Thank you again
bought the NS3 88 6 months ago.. just saw Nord teasing the release of NS4 later this month. Will be interesting to see changes to the NS line. Hope they remove the 1-10 markers and add LED markers.
I find that there's a lot of character to these uprights... I'm still partial to the Amber XL that comes first on the Nord Grand, but I need to download the new Pearl and Felt to hear how they sound in my room. Edited just to mention that I saw that the Stage 4 is being announced in 2 days. I'll have to think about that upgrade... It would be awesome if it had enough storage to hold all of these uprights!
Aniway …upright piano sounds are able to be very evocative of your past …the first piano you heard in the house of the old aunt or the piano you met at primary school …nord has the best library upright piano I ever heard…they simply work real and resonant …as they live …many users like amber, mellow, pearl, felt, bambino : I don’t like them cause my memory sound goes to grand- blueswede/ black and baby …but they are all beatiful
I just bought a Nord piano 5 73 and the magic question for me is, how long will the keyboard last until it gets "klapperig" (German). Before I had a Nord electric 3 HP and the best thing you could record with this is the sound of galloping horses. Just put a mic near the keyboard and play! I think these are the real interesting questions. How good are the products over time. Yamaha and Roland have better keyboard actions. They last longer. Not?
My Nord Piano 5 already came klapperig to me. Loved the sound, but absolutely hated the build quality , especially regarding the enormous price. So I sent it back immediately and swore to never buy anything from Nord until they change the second most important part on a keyboard - the goddamn keys. I really want to buy the Nord Stage 4, but they have to improve a lot to win me back. I really don't understand how Nord can get away with building products that are much more expensive while being so underwhelming in almost all areas other than sound. Build quality, memory, Display, Connectivity - not on par with the competition, yet Nord ask for more money. I keep my hopes up for the Nord Stage 4 being the instrument, I've always wanted.
@@nickh4025 I finally got a Nord Piano 5 73 for like 1.800€ new. I could not let the chance pass by. Until now, the keyboard works fine. Not like my old one. But a Nord stage 4? I don´t know. Do you like the synth part in there? I would always prefer Yamaha sounds from the montage or even the motif. Also the Rhodes and Wurli Sounds from the Nord are outdated. they need to be improved. The pianos are good but I am missing at least one sound like Yamaha´s or Keyscape´s C7 Sound. Sharp and clear
Old but gold ….blueswede…I like resonant upright …more bright is grand upright, beatiful and powerful…more gentle: blueswede but also black ( petrof) …both are aniway resonant when you play harder ..then a like the baby …little resonance but a strong character
I think this bears out the complaint that there's a few too many uprights! Just one or two of these would surely do the trick...they all have the same basic character.
Sooooo ... Nord should do a memory slot or 3-4 to comply with their best layered Pianos ... All very good sounding anyway (just in the middle ) ... maybe you should do a back to back with your 4 favorite ones ... just give this metallic high notes and the growling bass a chance to be heard Nice Demo anyway
…but not one of Nord’s pianos are designed to use the keyboard by Fatar or Kawai. A real problem matching velocity, set-off (there’s none) and weight, with a sample patch. Best for electric pianos or just the medium sized Yamaha “Bright Piano” when playing live.
What boards in particular do you mean? The Nord is not a workstation, was never intended to be. But in my opinion there is simply no other keyboard on the marked offering the same degree if flexibility, combined with hands on control and soundquality as the Nord Stage offers.…I could be wrong of course:-)
@@theclaverman Come on, some nords doesn’t even have the modulation wheel but they are still super expensive. LFO modulation, simulation of the age of the synth, live editing. Came here to make this exact comment AND mention Smokey bars at 3am (Tom Waits was the obvious)
Yes …nord upright are better than grand coda …they just sound better

there can never be too many upright pianos!! Nords piano lib is astounding!!!
Nord stage 4!!!!!!!!!
Bambino and Black!

Pearl is incredible, but I still think Black upright fits best in a lot of songs
Black Upright was my favourite back when I owned a Nord Electro 5 HP 🙂
Hey Bro, you left mono out on again on the Nord lol.
Pearl and romantic, although everyone could find a use
Awesome. I just wish their prices would go sud.
great idea to compare these upright , Nord is the only manufacturer to give such a choice, the uprights by yamaha or Roland Kawai etc are very bad
What song is he playing?
He said it himself in the video. It’s a ditty he wrote for demonstration purposes.
Might benefit from a re-upload because the audio is mono guys. Still lovely of course, but would be way lovelier in stereo!
Haven't got a Nord 😓

they always have and mostly likely always will use Fatar keybeds
I play my Nord Stage 2 since ten years or so and it’s not „klapperig“ at all, unlike my Yamaha YC73 after only one year. 🙄

1:36 - the funk so brother
Are the uprights telling us something about the reveal on the 16th of Feb for the stage? 😏
Magnificent!
That's nice, but Nord should release a new Clavinet sound. The only one available is average, and dates back from 2010.
Wait Why in MONO??? 😢 You forget disabled “Mono” function…
Exactly my thought. 🙈😂
that's why it's so bad here on my phone
Best : pearl- grand- baby .. and also a little Queens

Upload sounds mono, unfortunately. Maybe due to the video-edit program ;-) happens a lot

B.S.:-)
New nord stage 4 is out on february 16th don’t open your wallet just yet.
Sound mono???
Mono sound guys….
I love playing the piano but I don't have one it seems you have plenty I would be greatful if you send me one more reason I subcribed
