  • More at HowNowVideo.com. Here's a quick review of the AG-HMC150 AVCHD camera from Panasonic. I'm editing the video using a quad-core Dell XPS 630 machine with 6GB of RAM. You'll need a beefy computer to edit AVCHD.

    final cut pro = no scrubbing. also handles AVCHD like a pro now that they've fixed it. and I'm working with a 2gb Ram macbook pro and although exporting is a little slow, working in the editing window is just fine.
    god I love AVCHD. it almost makes me believe in god.

    My school still uses it, even in their recently built 2 million dollar shop room with all new equipment except cameras. I love the camera though. Very great quality for educational and news gathering purposes. Not 4K, nit cinema grade 8k. But it does the job well. Would buy one if I had money.

    Thank you for your response back. I feel better about SD. I did buy the camcorder for the 24p feature. I noticed some cheaper canon's under 1000 with 24p. Amazing how fast things change with cameras and camcorders.

    I think the HMC150 is a great camera. It's light and does everything well. If the camera you have your eye on has a lens that's had a filter to protect it with no scratches, then I would say go for it. The trend in cameras is larger sensors. People are using DSLRs and the like. But they are harder to handle. The HMC150 still rocks.

    I believe the answer is yes. The latest version of the camera should support those cards. You might want to search the web for the user guide PDF. It's out there.

  • @dteubner

    The HMC150 is a great camera. If you go with the 5d you'll need a lot of gear, follow fucus, supports, etc. If you want to have a rig that is easy to run-and-gun, the HMC150 would be just fine. If, however, you want to buy all the support equipment necessary to make a 5d do the job, the 5d would be as good a choice.

    I will do another video with a side-by-side comparison. Both the Panasonic and the Canon XH-A1 are nice. The Canon is heaver, feels more substantial, and allows you to manually zoom on the lens or rocker arms without switching. The Canon also has an auto/manual switch for audio, including a stereo mini-jack. Also, HDV video (from tape) is a snap to edit, requiring only a basic computer.
    The Panasonic records to SDHC card so you don't need to playback any tapes like the Canon. More to come...

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  12 лет назад

    The newer Panasonic AG-AC160 or AC130 has two card slots and can do a simultaneous backup. However, owning my HMC150 for three years and doing hundreds of events, I never had a card failure from this single-slot camera.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  13 лет назад

    @Samps1188 Yes. The audio track in Premiere Pro is in stereo, meaning it is your left AND right audio track from the HMC150. If you want to bring those two channels of audio in as two mono tracks, do the following: Import your video into Premiere Pro. BEFORE dragging the clip into a timeline (sequence) right-click the video in Premiere and choose Modify >>Audio Channels. Choose the Mono. Now when you drag the clip into a timeline (sequence) your audio will drop into two mono tracks instead.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  13 лет назад

    @GoffFilms The HMC150 is the best camera I've owned to date. If you have a robust PC and can edit AVCHD video, then you'd be doing okay with this camera. Of course, they keep introducing new cameras every year, but I think the HMC150 is a good value. Alternatively, the Sony HDR-AX2000 with a 20x zoom might do well too. The question is can you edit AVCHD video easily. Either camera will do the trick. Good luck deciding.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  12 лет назад

    Yes. That's the correct setting. But if you're not sure, you can drag a clip onto the "new item" icon in Premiere Pro CS5, and it will automatically create a timeline that is correct for your footage.

    @tozziwow I'm not sure if there is any difference in the two models. I had the HMC40 for review purposes only and had to send it back. You could ask your question at the DVXUSER website. You'll find lots of discussion about Panasonic cameras there. Good luck.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  13 лет назад

    @LethargicBannanazZ The hvx200a is a larger camera in bulk, records to tape AND P2. I believe the image quality is similar to the HMC150. However the hvx200a uses P2 cards which are expensive. That said, Pansonic will soon be launching the AG-AC130 which sports a 21x zoom lens. Costs more, but if you need a real zoom, it might be a good choice. But I love my HMC150 and been using it for 2 years. Best camera I've owned to date.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  14 лет назад

    @lotsaEntertainment I prefer the HMC 150 over the Canon, but the Canon has a sweet lens at X20 zoom. To get tape into your computer you just need to connect the Canon using Firewire. I've been using my Panasonic for over a year now and loveit.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  15 лет назад

    I think I paid around $3200 or so. Extra battery added to the price. I use Premiere Pro CS4 to edit, but often will first transcode to DVCPRO HD with MainConcept utility (free from Panasonic for owners of HMC150).

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  14 лет назад

    @beachman41 I believe Apple first transcodes AVCHD into Apple ProRes. Then it's easy to edit. But you might want to ask the question at Adobe's website. Go to the user Forums under the Support link and choose Premiere Pro. Ask the question there. I don't work on a Mac. Good luck.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  14 лет назад

    @StuartHaight The HMC150 has a better image I feel. If he shot the video too hot (with +6 gain) then the two cameras may not match. The HMC150 has larger chips than the HMC40, so it should be better in low light.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  12 лет назад +1

    I've never tried the JVC. If the JVC is a 1/3 sensor, my guess it's low light capability will be similar to the HMC150. But I know the HMC150 is an excellent camera overall.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  15 лет назад

    Yes, scrubbing the AVCHD clips in the timeline of Premiere Pro CS4 is frustrating. That's why I always convert to DVCPRO HD if I need to edit precisely (say, for a two-camera shoot). However, Adobe did improve CS4 with it's recent upgrade to CS4.1 (scrubbing is still jerky, but playback is much better).

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  13 лет назад

    @hobocamptheater I believe Macs first transcode the AVCHD into native ProRes format. Not 100% sure, but you could ask your question at DVXUSER forum. Lots of HMC150 users there that might be able to answer your question.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  14 лет назад

    @MrSupersteez If you mean that you'll videotape on the sideline as others do the action sports, then yes. But I wouldn't recommend this camera if you'll be carrying it on a snowboard or other type of action yourself. It's better to get a helmet cam (like GoPro or Contour HD) for rough work. But again, if you'll be videotaping on the sideline, it's a great camera with a pretty good wide angled lens. Another option is the Panasonic TM700. It's small but the video is great.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  15 лет назад

    You're camera is an excellent choice. I have yet to have someone request a blu-ray disk, so your camera should be fine until people clammer for blu-ray (this may actually never happen). If you shoot widescreen with your camera you'll get the look of HD (only in SD). I've noticed that on my flat screen TV SD upconverts great from standard DVD (which is what I normally shoot anyway) so even I won't probably ever create blu-ray stuff, but SD.
    So just enjoy what you have. My two-cents worth.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  13 лет назад

    @EricPiencka No quality difference that I know of. The SDHC Class 10 cards reformat in the camera within 2 seconds compared to around 10 seconds for reformatting the Class 6 cards. So that is faster. But image quality is the same.

  • @lorenzen162
    @lorenzen162 14 лет назад

    Potentially, I've rad comparisons and the only thing better is the drop and edit, so you can begin editing faster rather than having to import footage. But they are essentially the same camera, but the 100u runs around 3,000, while the panasonic runs about 1800. So Price wise the panasonic is the way better deal, unless you want to pay an extra 1200 just to edit faster

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  14 лет назад

    It depends. The larger cameras have plenty of manual controls, right on the lens (aperature, focus, zoom). I haven't tried the HDR-XR520, but it's probably pretty nice. If you're just starting out and don't have lots of money, consider the little camera. If you have $3200 to spend, the HMC150 is a good choice. Perhaps you can find some online review of the HDR-XR520.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  15 лет назад

    Hard to say. The Canon has a 20x zoom lens but records to tape. The Panasonic has a nice wide angle lens, good for tight spots and records to SD cards. Both cameras are very nice, however I prefer the Panasonic, I suppose.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  13 лет назад

    @tbabbitt44 Macs first transcode the AVCHD into ProRes. So you'll need to wait for that process to finish while importing. But once in ProRes, I understand that editing will be smooth and easy. I don't own a Mac so I can't test it. You could ask your questions at DVXUSER. It's a free forum of Panasonic enthusiasts. You'll need to create a free account to post a question, but Mac users are surely there. Good luck.

    @platepetter I used a dual-core machine. Render times are slower, of course. But it's doable.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  14 лет назад

    @lotsaEntertainment For the HMC 150, just drag over the AVCHD footage. It's quick. For the Canon, you'll need to play the tape back into your computer at real time. One hour of tape equals one hour of playing that back into your computer.

    @hobocamptheater If you are using final cut it will automatically scratch the files and turn them into MOV format. If you are using Premiere you can just drag and drop the MTS files from sdcard. Playback in will depend on your ram memory size. I edit AVCHD on an Imac in both progrms with only 2gigs of ram its not as fast as I would like but usable I will be upgrading my ram.

    @aron3879 The HMC150 is one of the best cameras around in that price range. I've use a few in my day, and once you learn this camera, you'll find it works great. If you're producing for news, you'll need to check with the news industry to get a sense of what type of footage and format they recommend. You can always convert the AVCHD into something the news services will want. If you know anybody in the news industry, ask them. Buying a camera is always a leap of faith.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  14 лет назад

    @HighVoltage559 That's sounds good to me. Because I normally transcode the AVCHD into standard def, editing isn't a real problem. I have a similar computer as yours and editing raw AVCHD is doable but it can be a little slow. The new Premiere Pro CS5 and newer nvidia cards now improve the performance of AVCHD editing and I'll be getting a faster nvidia card soon to take advantage of CS5's "Mercury Playback Engine." Good luck...

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  11 лет назад

    I've never used them. The HMC150 has a pretty good wide angle to begin with. I'm sure the lens attachments will make the camera a little front-heavy. I don't think there is a great need for them. Perhaps the extra-wide angle could come in handy once in a while.

    The DVX is a 4:3 camcorder, its 16:9 mode is not a true one, so you lose resolution when shooting widescreen. Everything is widescreen now if not HD.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  14 лет назад

    @HighVoltage559 I use the Panasonic HMC150. I had the Sony on loan for a week. I liked the lens and white balance features. I would like a longer zoom on the Panasonic, but its wide angle is great. I think I like the HMC150 better.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  14 лет назад

    @Bluesguy22 Good question. I often wondered that myself. I don't think you're able to do it. Perhaps you would have to have a HDMI card in your computer and go from the HMC150 to that card to use OnLocation. Not really sure. You could ask that question at DVXUser for. Search Google. They can definitely answer that. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Will the hmc150 continue to hold its own into the coming years? The picture from it seems excellent, yet it is perhaps not as detailed as others. • @dteubner
    @dteubner  13 лет назад

    @MichaelMcMahon95 The XH A1 is a great camera. Its HDV format is easy to edit. The camera has a great zoom lens. I loved that camera. It is tape-based and you need a firewire port to import (play back) the video into your computer. It all comes down to whether you want to deal with tapes or go tapeless. We've all had to make a decision either way. But the XH A1 feels like a solid camera, unlike the HMC150, which is light and plastic-like (although it is tough enough). I've gone tapeless.

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  11 лет назад

    I usually shoot with scene file 6. That's the least altered. Then I use levels (or curves) during editing to darken the blacks a tad. Sometimes I tweak the whites a little. Then add your greenscreen filter in editing.

  • @davidsondrew
    @davidsondrew 13 лет назад

    @dteubner @ericPiencka Actually, there is a difference. The higher the class, the faster the card can read a right information. So if you are looking to have high quality video, than go with the class 10, if you just need it for home videos (or things where quality doesnt matter) get the class 6. This is the way I see it, class 6 is ideal for DSLR picture shooting. Any video, including DSLR, I use class 10.

  • @dteubner

  • @dteubner
    @dteubner  11 лет назад

    Depth-of-field is why folks shoot the Canon DSLRs in the first place. You might be able to match the "look" of the Canon with the Panasonic. You'll have to do a white balance and perhaps some color correction in your editing program if a perfect match is needed. I shoot Panasonic only, so my matching is pretty good. You'll have to just take a change on what gear to buy. It took me months to get familiar with my gear. Whatever gear you get, practice makes perfect. Checkout DVXUSER.com too.

    Hi David
    I have an HMC150 and I'm not sure what the best scene file settings I should use when doing green screen. What would you recommend?

    The HMC150 remains fairly "grain-free" up to 12db of gain. I haven't used the PD-170, but I suspect it may be a little better in low light, and perhaps more saturated. But I've never felt limited by the HMC150. Anybody else out there used both cameras?

    Do we have the chance to achive depth of field with panasonic ag hmc 150 just like DSLRs? Do you recommend using lens mounts with these types of cameras or is it better to buy panasonic gh2 instead to achive depth of field and having freedom of changing the lenses?

    what about quality, the canon 65d mkiii seems to have a nice lush depth of field, can get allot into the true full frame, does the panasonic look as decent, for example if i get both would they make a good combo?

    hey Dteubner, thanks for taking the time to post a run-down
    Quick question: Can I record straight to my computer??
    Even if there was some creative workaround -- like sending a video signal to some screen record software or Premiere or something…
    Would shave off hours of workflow! Any insight?

      +Drew Hudgins I think you'll need a HDMI recorder of some sort. Check out Blackmagic Design. They have different solutions. Because this camera records to SD cards, not sure how much time you'll save by capturing to your computer. The camera's SD card is ready to edit immediately.

      +dteubner Thanks so much for the reply.
      Yeah, I suppose I could do the box (I gotta remember to shut off all the on screen display things, don't I?
      Well, I can edit with Premiere Pro. I'm on a MacPro 8core 2.8GHz 22GB RAM, and that sounds like a beast. But it's still clunky. I would re-wrap the AVCHD (MTS) files with ClipWrap, then edit… that helped I think.
      But recently, I gave Screenflow a try (I had purchased with some bundle… but it just sat and I never used it)
      Whoa, it blew me away. It was like what iMovie used to be. Simple. Fast. Smooth. And "automatic!" (espeically when recording from my built-in camera). For kicking out quick little helpful videos (all I care to do; not doing lengthy projects these days), I just wanted to see if I could stream line a little harder, especially since I have that expensive high-end cam that doesn't get a whole of use.
      At some point, I'll see f Screenflow can play nice with the .MTS files the HMC150 makes…

    32bit systems will work just fine for editing AVCHD, as well as Vista or XP systems. Also, mini phones have no place on this camera, that's why Panasonic left them off. If you can drop $3500USD for a camera, they assume you can drop $200 for a professional lav.

    @MichaelMcMahon95 I think Final Cut Pro first imports the AVCHD into ProRes. That's a conversion process. Once in ProRes it should be a snap to edit. I can't predict how the editing in Premiere Pro will be on a iMac. It might be fine. Not sure. If someone has any AVCHD camera that you can test with that'll will tell you. Good luck.
