After re-watching this I'm now even more convinced that Toby's protecting the girls by joining the A team. I think he joined after he left in this episode. We can tell he's trying to help them when he rang Emily and told he to get out. I wouldn't be surprised if he's having contact with Caleb too after it's been said Toby and Caleb would do anything to protect the girls.
Toby is sexy when he is angry and about him being on the A team... I truly believe that he is just trying to protect Spencer. I remember in the summer finale, when he hugged Spencer after he told her that he loves her, a look of guilt or pity kind of ran across his face. I think he does truly love her.
