  • Day 1 of a dream trip to Barber Motorsports Park for the MotoAmerica season finale races. Endurance ride over 14 hours and nearly 700 miles with strong crosswinds from Colorado Springs, CO to Tulsa, OK. Beautiful skies over mostly flat terrain. Brief visit to Dodge City, Kansas.
Make sure you take breaks on long trips and pack gear for varying climates! I also strongly recommend earplugs and a throttle hold if you don't have fancy technology like cruise control.

Loved that you started the day with Scripture! I agree with your admonition to wear earplugs. They help even in my Shoei. Aside from noise, they reduce fatigue.

I am amazed at the beautiful sky throughout this day of riding -- wow, marvelous! You should take the time to visit things like the Boot Hill Museum! Not only would it be good to have more off-the-bike time, but it would make your journey a lot more enjoyable! Museums are fun. I thoroughly enjoyed traveling with you on this very long ride!

Awesome video. Thank you so much for sharing. Seems like that length of ride would be better endured on a cruiser style bike. How was the seat? How was your seat (butt) by the end? Some day, I may be able to join you :)

The Versys 650 is actually quite comfortable for a light touring bike. The seat was not a problem at all. Keeping your body in the same position for hours on end is tough. I find ways to move limbs and even my body around the bike between rest breaks (within safety, of course.)

I got the impression you were going to Alabama with someone else, but it looks like you were by yourself. My favorite part was the Dodge City sites--never been there.

Nope. Purely solo trip. I did invite some friends but didn't expect anyone to take me up on it.

Did you miss having cruise control? What mechanical issues arose during the trip? Was your bike comfortable enough?

Yes, cruise control would be very nice for long trips. I use a mechanical throttle clamp carefully to avoid problems (keep it a little loose.) The bike generally functioned very well. Just re-broke a rear turn signal that had previously been glued from a break in the mountains. The Versys is plenty comfortable for long rides. Good upright riding position, leg room, and a comfortable seat. I highly recommend it.
