  • This has to be the most circulated video that Island ever shot. It traveled around the world many times, long before the internet.
30 years ago this year, I was at Peter Gabriel at the Greek Theater Los Angeles, and met this guy videotaping. He told me he taped parts of both nights at the Greek in Berkeley a few nights before. And was taping the first night in L.A. from up front, when he got caught and they took his tape! It also had footage from Berkeley on it! I told him I would see what I could do. I called the Greek management and apologized for his not having a pass, and reminded them they had no right to keep the Berkeley footage, (true or not) and asked for the tape back after we erase the L.A. Greek footage. They said OK. I brought his VHS-C deck to the Greek and sat there for 5 minutes as we erased... "Across the River" and a minute of "I have the Touch"... from 1983-08-16 Greek L.A.But saved more close footage not included here. And saved "Humdrum", "D.I.Y". and clips of "Lay your hands" and "fishing net" from Berkeley, included here.
This is from a PAL transfer P.GAB.-Berkeley83v.2-RPdvd06 Thanks to RP.
I will make a better and complete update when I have the best transfer possible.
There is almost 2 hours of footage, close and far shot.
It will be nice to see this on here with some correction for the shaky camera.

I was there and have never forgotten it. One of the best performers/performances ever. He let the crowd surf his body over their heads--talk about wanting contact! Only wish the technology had been better for this vid.

I met the man who filmed this. I went to his house and he showed me some tapes. He somehow brought in a large video camera and finagled several live tapings of shows including Eddie Murthy’s legendary performance. I went to his house and thought about buying his Gabriel show but his price was too rich for my part time wages ($100) but fascinated with his work nonetheless. The picture has suffered over the course of 40 years. I didn’t think it was him but when I heard “fuck South Africa”during Biko I clearly remembered that. How did he get away with this? Fantastic act of piracy despite its legal issues.

Thank you so much for this! I was there Sunday 8/13/83, one of the all time best shows I've ever seen. I have an audio recording of the whole thing, but it is on a cassette tape. I'm working on digitizing it right now, and if the audio is any better than this, I'll upload it.

ok this blows my mind...I was at this concert. The Greek was so great for shows. Genesis did Super's Ready there. Gabriel laid down into the audience and everyone passed him along. He came right over me. Had to stop some prick from pulling his sock off. All musicians should be forced to go to a Gabriel concert so they can be straightened out.

This brings back so many memories. I was there too and also for the Genesis concerts, all three nights. Suppers Ready was amazing. I remember at at one point Tony Levin screwed up and Peter stopped the song and said "That is what is known as a fuck up" and restarted the song.

I just found the Los Angeles footage shot a few days later.
It is farther back, but some different songs like Milgram's 37.
      I'll post A.S.A.P.

Thank you for this! Incredible seeing Peter and the boys as the close out chapter one of the journey soon to begin chapter two starting with "So".
This and Rockplasst should be required viewing for any PG fan who thinks it all started in the late 80s

+Gavin S And Supper's Ready should be listened to and viewed by anyone who thinks it started here or at Rockpalast. Gabriel was so wildly unpredictable in his early years. Most of his post - So fans would be shocked when they see it themselves.

I had the other "not fixed" version of this a few years back, and it included "Across the River" and "I Have the Touch" only. Seemed to be the opening of a show.
What happened to THAT post? I preferred that version of "Across The River"
