So, two things I would recommend doing: 1. Sand the surface of the word. This stops splintering and if it comes from a blue or orange box store removes the factory varnish they spray on a a sealer. 2. Braze the entire board with a torch before you pour. This will stop the silver from skittering and popping as the surface water will already be evaporated and also acts to harden the wood. No need to recaste the first bar as well. My two cents
@@SilverDragons47 that's a good idea. why not both? I could see maybe 200 degrees for an hour in the oven then harden off the surface gently with a torch. The popping of the molten metal looks very dangerous and is, of course, caused by moisture in the wood rapidly evaporating. Not only that you will inevitably not recover all of the silver that flys everywhere. I could be wrong and maybe wood will do this regardless of the precautions, but it would be interesting to see the contrast reaction of baked and torched wood vs untreated if any as well as the life of the mold.

Good timing my friend they just showed up yesterday afternoon in the mail. Awesome job they came out just like I thought they would. Thanks again. I'm working on the next project now...
@Silver Dragons pouring into that wood was really cool! I've never seen anything like that before. Honeycomb is exactly what I was thinking too! Great job!
This is really cool! This is one of those times that makes me want to start pouring. Have a mold of my own to pour and maybe sell. Just thinking out loud. Also, to me it looks like dragon/reptile scales.
ROSA agUIRRE I will be sending them out with all of the pours ordered from the January 3rd pour party and I have a big version in my merch store 👍🏽 that’s all I have right now 🔥🐉
I have to wonder if different types of wood would give any significantly different results... For example mahogany or teak with very tight woodgrain. The oak you used seems a great first time choice... Also wonder if a wood burning pen for pyrography would allow you ( or others) to add artistic elements to the bars... Just some thoughts... Great video.... BTW
I'm guessing the splattering on the first pour is due to moisture in the wood? Likely has gas pockets? Can you pre-char the wood to reduce the moisture? Also prevent some of the excess burning?
Would it just be easier to use copper or aluminium first and then on the final pour use silver? Just thinking saving having to dredge impurities out of the first two pours of silver on remelt?
Silver Dragons Dangitt!! I thought I had a novel idea lol How many oz’s would I need to send you to git you to make one for me? I’d send you a constitutional silver gift of course for your time and expertise
This is great bud. It's neat to see you wandering around in different pouring mediums. My mentor, "Ag Ender" is in my eyes the king of wood pours. He always had a can to cover the wood pours that keeps the topside of the pours nice and with a lot fewer dimples and shaky things on them. Check him out son.He was monumental for getting me going when I first started pouring. Like this I have done a number of sequential wood pours for various folks. Number them so they can see them change from pour to pour. I finally now have all the bolt cutters from 8 to 42 inch. The big boy will chew up a 10 oz bar in no time so I don't need to make near as much shot as I used to. Well bud, , , What a fun post. Great to see you doing pours from different molds than just graphite. WOOHOO ON YOU SON !
Tomoko's Enterprize i’ll have to check him out thanks for the tip my friend!!! yes now I have done clay, graphite, water, and wood. I wonder what is next 😏🔥🐉
I made a furnace by cutting a 55 gallon Harley Davidson oil drum down to a little above half. Added a couple layers of thermal blanket with refractory cement over that. The homemade LP burner is a super simple design which uses a hair drier for forced induction. A low setting is just right, while high pushes the limits of what my cement can handle. I'm using a large salamander graphite crucible at the time, but it's been used primarily for copper. The problem I have in using silver is that the crucible I have is so small. My plans are to do the Oak mold in copper. I can't wait. It's going to be awesome.
I'm sure by now you know why the mold was spitting as you did mention that before. I say this more for the casual scroller. The reason why is due to the water content in the wood. As it heats up it causes the water to evaporate which then creates gas causing the silver to "spit". This is an interesting idea but if I made a suggestion id say next time to heat the hole in the block of wood before casting to prevent the moisture issue. Probably not going to do a ton but the first pour probably wont be as violent as this one.
psychout I do not I sell my pours right now live. my next party will be on January 3rd 👍🏽 I charge $28 per ounce with free shipping. these were all trades 🔥🐉
