  • Larry Hofer is currently converting his brand new C8 Corvette with a GM 8.1 liter direct gas injected big block. We are pretty sure he is the first person on the planet to do this using the existing C8 Architecture - In this video you will see the engineering process and initial steps to making this idea into a reality.
    Larry Hofer is a San Diego hot rod ledged and published author of several horsepower technical manuals such as his most recent book: Chevrolet 8.1L Vortec/496 Performance Manual. If you would like to learn more about GM 8.1 L Big Block modifications, check out Larry's recent book www.americanbo...
    We will feature the progress of this awesome build as Larry gets closer to making this fire up and run.

      I’ve been joking about swapping an 8.1 into an h2 ever since I got a silverado with one. I’ve done all sorts of wild stuff with it and it’s never let me down, but the 6.0, that on the other hand, has left a lot to be desired. What all is involved in actually doing the swap? I’ve seen duramax swaps that move the radiator forward and that seems to be the major packaging restraint. I’m very curious about this, especially since you’ve actually done it. What was your experience with it? What should I look out for? Does the computer work directly with the rest of the wiring from the original stuff? I assume most of the stuff should just swap over fairly easily because it’s basically the same truck under all the fancy bodywork. What transmission do you use?

    • @2lucky01
      @2lucky01 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@-sh1t the radiator and air-conditioning components stay put even reuse the factory, AC pump, I used the stock, H2, PCM, and wiring harness slightly modified the crank sensor and cam sensor wiring swapped in a 4L 80 and the transfer case from an 0809 model I use electric fans and the PCM controls them. I did get a two core aluminum radiator for a 03 Silverado that bolts perfectly, but I added a sitting to the extra heater core hose. I had to cut the top off of the passenger side motor mount and move it forward I think 2 1/4 inch not sure I took measurements with the factory transmission in the truck with no engine, DMAX store upper motor mounts. I’m sure that I’m missing some of the finer details.

    • @-sh1t
      @-sh1t 6 месяцев назад

      @@2lucky01 I looked over your a channel a bit and it seems like you did almost exactly what I was imagining with the swap. I mostly want to keep the insides all mostly stock, mainly for reliability sake. The 8.1 I have has a little over 200k and supposedly had a supercharger on it before I bought it, and it shows no signs of wear and tear. I’ve towed, gone off road, all sorts of activities and it’s never let me down. The h2 is immensely capable off road with the stock engine, however my right foot is left itching with the 6.0’s power level. I have considered looking into the newer 6.6 gas motors and possibly doing a 427 based off that, but I have concerns about reliability and ease of swap. The 8.1 is simple and does everything I ask of it. I’m not too worried about mileage because it’s already not ideal, however I’d like to look into some sort of system that allows the stock drivetrain to run in rear wheel drive if I choose. Around town I don’t really need the full time awd, and it’s a lot of extra drag on the drivetrain that could be reduced easily. I am much more interested and seriously considering the idea of finding a junkyard motor and cracking it open to replace wear items for a swap now. If motor mounts are the biggest hurdle for packaging, I will most definitely be looking into a swap if the 6.0 ever pops or I get free time, haha. Thanks for responding, I really appreciate the knowledge man.

    I had 8.1 in 2002 2500hd 4x4 brand new. I really never used the truck for much. I bought it to do a tow a traveler trailer. Only towed my Jeep on a flatbed. That thing would go up to the Loon Lake from the bay area get the same gas mileage back. Amazing the power that engine had back then.

    I own an 04 Sierra 2500hd with an Allison/8.1. Has about 127,000 miles, very, very clean in silver birch metallic. Plan to completely upgrade it with forged internals, turbo, full suspension, etc. as money permits. Been eyeing Raylar parts, and watching Lt Tolman and Holdener for ideas.
    Can't wait to see how this project turns out! Might be able to utilize some things that you pioneer.

    My only apprehension would be cooling, but after listening to this gentleman I think he has that worked out. At 494 cubic inches, that motor must make a mountain of torque, and with is comes heat. Everything I have heard about that transmission has been very favorable, I'm sure it's up to the task at hand.
    My other apprehension is the computer, but HP Tuners has helped me in the past and really did a great job.
