- A ballad about The Hesper and The Luther Little
www.davidcoffin.com/shop (Flight of Time CD)
Written by Lois Lyman and performed wit help from Ellen Epstein and John Fleagle.
I think of these two hulks as part of my childhood as we drove down east Maine in the summer to Marsh Island. The Hesper and The Luther Little were rotting away out the starboard window of the car as we headed over the bridge out of "The Prettiest Village in the State of Maine".
As a kid my mother and I visited a family friend near Wiscasset. That friend knew I loved sailing ships (and still do) so she brought us to see the Hesper and Luther Little. Would've been 1996 or '97. After they were scrapped her husband who was a hobbyist woodworker got hold of a decent amount the leftover planking and hull spikes and made me a wall mount display with a portrait of the ships woodburned onto it. Hanging across the room from me as I'm typing. One of my favorite childhood memories.
They should build replicas of Hesper and Luther Little as a monument to New England sailing.
This is most certainly, the most beautiful song I've ever heard.
Yes, it just obsesses me ... REA, Chicago USA
I got so teary-eyed watching this video, and went and looked up an old photo of my grandfather and I who was standing in front of what was left of the two Wiscasset Schooners back in the summer of 1993. Back in late June and early July of 1993 I took a trip with my maternal grandfather, and grandmother in their RV to see the two old four mass schooners, and back in 1993 i was only 6 years old, because I was born August 8th 1986, so I was nearly 7 years old. I even have some pieces that came from the two old ships that my grandfather left to me, when he passed away in 2009, because he went back (without me) in 1998, when they was demanding the sad remains of the two old schooners. Fun fact, my grandfather’s grandfather was Charles Alfred Bartlett, AKA iceberg, Charlie if the HMHS Britannic. I wish the two old ships could have been saved, it sure is a shame that they were taken out the way that they were, because I sure would enjoy taking that trip with my only son, today.
Nice memories. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Enjoyed seeing them so often...so inspirational...believe they ended there, due to a Taxation issue... Great play, & sing, David...thankyou for sharing a piece of History....
What a beautiful song!!! And wonderful photos and artwork of two ships that represented the passing of an era.
After hearing this song, I feel like visiting these two pieces of history.
Drove by them many times...sad to see them gone.
Hearing John Fleagle's voice echoing yours with the wind blowing through these noble remains - priceless.
I married a Fleagle, and we know some of them still living there.
This may be the best song David has ever done. I love it!
Wow. Quite the compliment. Thank you.
You're more than welcome.@@DavidCoffinMusic
What a gorgeous melody!
I feel vocally blessed
Beautiful
Just went to David's website and bought some CDs!!! I wonder if he has a songbook.... He has a wonderful voice and sings of things that I have always loved.
I wish he had a songbook, too.
It’s a pity they could not have been pulled out years ago before the decay set in 😢😢
And completely removed now no sign at all on google earth
I would like to know when they were removed 👍
Around 1998, I believe.
Love it!
Shanties are being discovered by the normies these days. Which is a good thing.

Did you write this song Mr Coffin? If you did, I trust you are proud of it .....because you damn well should be! Wonderful words and a haunting tune. Thank you, from an old seaman.
Ah, I should have researched before commenting. Song written by Lois Lyman,so its her I have to thank for it. Just have to thank David Coffin for a very fine performance.
Oh... the Wiscasset Schooners! I miss them.
What kind of concertina do you recommend for a beginner?
Quite a sad song. Were any of them saved ?
The only remains are what’s left at the scrapyard. They were becoming a navigation hazard and needed to be hauled away.
The parts would make a good sculpture and be a nod to the areas history
Who sings this with you?
The late John Fleagle and Ellen Epstein
Ellen Epstein also sang in the wonderful folk trio Cindy Kallet, Ellen Epstein, and Michael Ciccone.
It was so sad that theses beautiful ships had to go
Evening David, how has the year been for you?
Those poor ladies...
But beautiful song.
