Christopher Eccleston is THE reason I fell in love with Doctor Who. His portrayal of The Doctor was absolutely amazing. I wish the writers would do another special including all of the new Who incarnations. Though I truly love each and every Doctor since the reboot, he will always have a special place in my heart as the one who brought me together with the mad man in a box. Yes, Christopher, you were indeed, fantastic.
Edit: I know he left with some bad blood between himself and the writers. I just wish they could resolve the issues and have him agree to come back for a special. As much as I love John Hurt, I'd much rather have seen Chris in that role the way it was supposed to be.

They have tried to get him to return a few times and he has always said no. The War Doctor in the 50th special was supposed to be his Doctor. They had to change it when he refused to do it. He has said his audio dramas will be his only return to Doctor Who and he has no intention of doing the live action TV series. Mind you he is getting a bad reputation in Hollywood. A lot of studios have blacklisted him, because he has slated a lot of his own films and TV shows and has even said a few times he only did them for the paycheck. One case of this was Thor the Dark World. He did his first interview to promote it and the interviewer asked him why he chose to do the film. Most actors say the script or the chance to work with someone. He simply said he did it for the paycheck. When asked about the script he said he didn't care all he cared about was the paycheck. He later slated the film. Then when he realised studios weren't picking him for films he did a U turn and said he would be happy to do more Marvel films. He also slated Gone in 60 seconds and said it was the worst mistake he ever made. Apart from him and Jodie Whitaker all the new Doctors are doing well in Hollywood and have or will appear in comic book based TV shows or films. David Tennant was in Jessica Jones. Matt Smith is in the Morbius film as the main villain Loxias Crown and Peter Capaldi will be in The Suicide Squad as The Thinker.

In my opinion Coleman's character had done its dash. They should have written her out permanently after the The Impossible Girl story line ended and Capaldi should have been started out with a new companion (and they shouldn't have given him amnesia). Clara ended up being an overplayed record and we ended up with this totally uninteresting storyline with Danny Pink. Perhaps I should go further and say that Moffett had basically run out of ideas, even Clara's storyline was really a replay of Amy Pond - a woman with a destiny that somehow deeply weaves in with the doctor's. Unlike many people I actually like the first part of Moffett's run, but after the impossible girl it just spiraled. It seemed like every enemy was defeated with The Power of Love (tm).

I too wish we'd gotten more Christopher Eccleston. That said, we have Eccleston to thank for all the seasons we've gotten since Eccleston's, and all the great Doctors who followed. If Eccleston hadn't done such a masterful job of portraying the Doctor -- complex, capable of dealing with cosmic scale matters or the very individual and human, knocking it all out of the park -- the show would have been hobbled at a bare minimum. Every one of Eccleston's successors owes him a debt of gratitude for establishing the range to expect of the Doctor; Eccleston was a tough act to follow, but the fact that they did meant that they delivered performances to be proud of.

IMHO Eccleston was the best. Casting of the Doctor tends to be a bit of "old oxford chap" which misses considerable psychological depth. But Eccleston brought "war wearyness" to the role following the end of the time war --- dare I say PTSDness? -- which rang very true in his attitudes and actions. But then we went back to "old oxford chappies, and now chippies". (Of course I thought that Rose should have become the 10th doctor.)

    • @kingbeauregard
      @kingbeauregard 3 года назад +2

@@dongeorge4037 I always figured that Eccleston / Tennant / Smith were young because the Doctor was trying to go back to a part of his life before he did the most monstrous thing he could even conceive of (later retcons notwithstanding). Eccleston had done it too recently to really escape its impact, and you're right, it shone through in his performance. Tennant and Smith, I can process as the Doctor having gotten just enough distance that he could try to pretend that it never happened. There was a lot of attempted denial on their part; it was the only way to deal with the guilt.
Capaldi was the first Doctor to not be consumed by guilt, so he became an old man again: he could "claim" that part of his life once more. But you know how he had lost track of whether he was a good man or not? I interpret that as his trying to reassess himself for the first time in a long time, without a ton of denial and guilt clouding his self-image.

There are some excellent stories stories in Colin's run - IMHO The Two Doctors and anything to do with Sill are right up there. Colin absolutely shone, as did the rest of the team. The trouble is that you also have some complete misfires as well - the Dalek story when the Doctor is all but absent springs to mind.
There is nothing any actor could do with a shoddy script, but the obvious difference between the successes and the rest was they were written by experienced script writers. In the case of the Two Doctors it was Bob Holmes who was probably the best writer the original run ever had. With that in mind, the obvious conclusion is that Colin was let down by a substandard script editor. History shows us that once he left the stories improved , its just a shame that Colin had been forced out by then

Well, he stated in an interview, back in the '80s I think, that he had essentially stopped having fun doing the part. He was often on edge when he was on set, snapping at people and whatnot, and realized that he'd just stayed in one role too long. In fact, because he was so well liked and so associated with the role, it actually made it difficult for him to be accepted in any other parts afterwards. He did later greatly enjoy the conventions and getting to meet with so many of the fans, though, and is very fond of his time as The Doctor.

People often forget that, at the time, Leela was a big hit with fans, especially among children. i believe Sarah Sutton (Nyssa) also was sad when her contract came to an end.

It would have been great to see another season with him and Perry especially. There was such a good chemistry and dynamic between the two of them that would come out on the screen. Much more than between her and Colin's doctor in my opinion. I feels like throughout Doctor Who the BBC has a habit of changing direction or pulling plugs too soon. Sylvester had toyed with leaving after 3 years, but he decided he would stay on for another year in the role. Season 27 was already being planned, scripts were being written and Sylvester was keenly looking forward to it. So I can see him being disheartened.
Matt eventually revealed he left far too early and did so only because Karen and Arthur had been written out (Karen was going no matter what). That is why season 8 seems so disjointed because most of those stories were being written with Matt in mind. His departure was announced quite late and writers have gone on record that they had to alter scripts for a new Doctor.
Eccleston did enjoy the role. But he had issues with the production side of things and took issue with, I believe, Joe Ahearne. Not a coincidence that neither came back the following year and RTD has said his original plan for the show and, indeed, his era, was with 9 in mind.
Billie I think got out at the right time. She never worked with Tennant for me (her and Eccleston were magic though). If Eccleston had stayed I would have been ecstatic with her staying too. But I wouldn't have handled another year of her and Tennant.
Paul McGann's film was a rating success in the UK. The problem there is that the BBC wasn't willing to produce the show themselves and was hoping for continued co-funding with Fox. But the film did poorly state side (which some attribute to having it so strongly linked with the original series). Hence why RTD started fresh and then revealed the new show was linked to the old one as it went on.
Peter Davison... haha. Poor fellow. In his case, he had met Patrick Troughton in the BBC Carpark and they got to talking. Troughton was aware Davison was the new Doctor. Davison asked him for advice and Troughton said "enjoy it. But do three years and get out". There is a few factors that contributed to him leaving 1. The above advice from Troughton and 2. Davison was unhappy with the scripts for his second year. By the time his third year enters production he was decided on leaving.
However, the stories for his third year were incredibly strong and, because he was leaving, he was allowed to play the part with a bit more freedom (his Doctor is more authoritarian and quite sarcastic in stuff like Frontios). By the time his last season was in swing he was enjoying himself immensely and went back to JNT and said, "You know, I think I'll stay on if the stuff remains this strong". But JNT said to him, "I am sorry, but you said you were leaving, it's been announced, and I have secretly offered the role to Colin Baker who has accepted". So Peter reluctantly stayed the course and left. But he did regret being hasty in his decision.

I agree that the 11th Doctor and Clara didn't have enough time together as a team for them to have been effective together. Half a series isn't enough for them to be together, they were just starting to become good together. I loved her with 12, but she could have spent more time with 11 too before he moved on especially after the Impossible Girl story arc, they just needed to be a duo together not mostly him trying to figure out the mystery box he thought she was. It would have been cool 11 with the Governess as well, I really liked their dynamic together, kind-of sassy and flirty, plus I think they truly cared for each other. I can see why Matt Smith wanted to stay on longer with Jenna Coleman, who wouldn't? Such a beautiful and wonderful woman. ❤
It's also a shame Paul McGann never got to play more of the Doctor on screen. He should have been involved more in the 50th anniversary special, he was totally underused though those 7 minutes are prue gold. Hopefully he'll appear again somehow in the 60th or even on a spin-off series, he needs more time as the Doctor for all of us to witness, appreciate and enjoy! 🙂

The reason I wish Matt Smith had stayed on longer is because 11( & 9 ) never got a story with archenemies the Master & Davros (though Missy was secretly pulling the strings off screen in the 2nd half of series 7) . This is my only complaint about 11's era , Smith was a great doctor assisted by a great showrunner / writer & companions .
David Tennant considered staying on another year , even meeting Mofatt to discuss the matter . He stuck his decision to leave in the end . Don't think that a 10th Doctor series 5 would've meant more of Donna though , she had already been written out at this point . Amy would've been introduced in pretty much the same way , except it would've been 10 crashing the TARDIS into her garden instead of 11 . At the time , her daughter with Rory (though River wasn't revealed as such till much later ) had already been introduced to the show , and as River mentions the last night of Darilium before her sacrifice in forest of the dead , I'm assuming Steven Mofatt already had that storyline building up in his head .

The low ratings for the 96 TV movie wasn't a UK thing, it did okay here. Sadly being a US/Canadian production the low ratings there killed it dead! I'd still love to know what idiot put it up against the final episode of Rosanne!

Matt said when he was hired he wanted to make it to the 50th, then pass the baton. So his “big regret” is he didn’t get to work with Jenna more? GTFO.
Also, she overstayed her welcome and should have left at Last xmas.
Chris was so cagey about his BTS reasons for leaving, but he DID only agree to ONE series. Nope, done with him ages ago.

After the sketch with "the curator" it would seem that the Dr can regenerate into a past version of his/herself. I have the feeling an old face will play the part again.

I watched this hoping to see Carole Ann Ford on it. She left, instead of getting pushed out, but only because she was 24 playing the role of a schoolgirl, and wasn't allowed to watch her character grow up.

Paul Mcgann it was a case that Doctor Who was a British show and the BBC co-produced Mcgann's Doctor Who movie with an American production company who wanted it to be more suitable for Americans. Sadly British fans felt they made it to American at the time and so it didn't go down to well. They've tried to get Christopher Eccleston to return a few times but he has always said no. They wanted him to return for the 50th special and he said no. So they wrote a new character and called him the War Doctor aka John Hurt. The role of the War Doctor was supposed to be Eccleston's Doctor. Eccleston could return if he wanted to he just refuses. He has said recently the audio dramas are his return, but he won't return to the actual live TV series.

If Eccleston regrets leaving Dr Who then why did he turn down the role for the 50th anniversary episode? I really like John Hurt but I would have preferred if Eccleston’s Doctor was in it.
