So I was looking into upgrading my HPE Proliant MicroServer Gen10 Plus RAM from the stock 16GB so that I could have plenty of RAM to start running proxmox and virtual machines and found out to my shock that HP charges over $200 for 16GB. So I got on the Crucial website and chatted with a sales person and they pointed me to a 64GB upgrade for about $140 so I'll be maxed out and ready to roll. I'm excited.
I have a asrock deskmini x300 with a ryzen 5700g running Proxmox which is a home server , no screen etc. ( overkill cpu I know )
I'm running Xpenology , and 3 virtual linux servers running Docker ( Heimdall , watchtower , portainer , pi-hole ) , emby , node-red with openzwave , utorrent , and programming software for my arduino , esp32 etc and all for about 20 watts of power idle.
I have a ubuntu , xbuntu , debian , windows 10 desktop versions which I boot up for testing any software , which using zfs snapshots are brilliant for software test .
I must have used snapshots and roll back 20 times trying to get openzwave working with node-red , due to problems with different dependencies.
I run PVE on an AMD system without integrated video. I was able to pass through all video cards to a virtual machine by following the official Proxmox PCI passthrough guide. So it's possible.
Yeah it’s def possible but it was being a pain for me so I just threw in a little gpu.
Yeah, it was definitely fiddly to get working, but it was really rewarding to get that PCIe slot back. Plus the console still shows on the primary GPU until the passthrough occurs, so I can still access UEFI and do any troubleshooting directly on the machine if needed.
But, yeah, I really wish it were just a checkmark-and-go kind of thing, instead of needing the kernel parameters and module blacklisting and VFIO options and everything else that goes into making it work properly.

Have you find a way to pass through the on board audio? I tried a proxmox macOS setup and the only thing I couldn't get to work is audio pass through...
Hi, nice video. But why comparing W10 vs Proxmox? Can you compare Proxmox vs. Esxi / Hyper-V?
Just because a lot of people (like myself) start messing around with VMs on their home PC which is usually running Windows, so I wanted to show the natural progression to a dedicated hypervisor. I don't have much experience with Esxi but I have been using TrueNAS Scale a good bit recently. Maybe a comparison between those two will be a future video.
@@RaidOwl I think the title is a bit confusing, when I clicked on this video i expected to get reasons why I should use ProxMox over something like Debian or Ubuntu.

regarding proxmox, can i use my existing OS on my physical drive without the need of reinstalling it and all the software which takes a loong time to this VM thing ? :) ps, i'm a newbie. My thought is to have windows and ubuntu on the same pc (both with own physical drives ), so i can run them at the same time side by side
Yep you can certainly do that. I’d suggest looking up “dual booting” videos and you’ll find a bunch of stuff to help get you going.

I'm currently running windows 7 on a standalone computer with sabnzb, sonar, ubiquiti cloud key, DNS updater and Home Assistant in a VM. I also share about 20gb of data (movies) across my network. Would Proxmox allow me to run all of this and be better?
It would run more efficiently on Proxmox as there is less overhead for sure.
I'm not proficient with sonarr and radarr...any tips on how to get started? Do I need sabnzb to work with them?

How does this compare to using Ubuntu to run docker containers?
They are both Debian-based so very nearly the same thing, but Proxmox is designed to be a hypervisor OS so it's more fitting for a server. They will both get the job, though.
The huge difference between docker and hypervisor is the OS. A docker container virtualizes an application under a running OS, so all of the hooks the Application usually makes to the OS go through a single OS. In a hypervisor, the entire OS is virtualized, so each application has it’s own OS to deal with, and conflicts are minimal, but resource requirements are higher.
Docker is very different than a hypervisor, but they each have their place.

If you are an unsophisticated user like me and you don't have good Linux skills installing the video card will be IMPOSSIBLE. Blocker number one: finding the PAID video drivers for Nvidia video card and making the corporate account with them. Stick to VMware jist click and go.
Wait what? That's weird. Depending on your hardware, you can get most of NVidia's proprietary drivers from their website for major Linux distros. There's even a handy repository half the time? o_O
Or you could run a cheap video card that doesnt require drivers you have to pay for. It is not necessary to have a powerful video card as you just interact through the Web GUI. 😅
This seems akin to saying ' I replaced WIndows 10 with Hyper-V'... (the point being that ProxMox is not even really an OS, it's a Debian-based hypervisor. Q: What can you do with *just ProxMox*? A: Nothing
Tbf I can build and share a ZFS pool all within “just Proxmox”. You’re reading too hard into semantics. It’s a video about running Proxmox on my server instead of windows. 99.99% of people will understand what that means.

@@mdd1963 No , not really , What I'm saying is proxmox is a hypervisor for running as a server running virtual machines , the use is the same as hyper-v , esxi , xcp-ng ,etc it is a hypervisor server not a full blown OS like windows for playing games etc, but being Debian based you can install anything you like native , can you run any games or programs on a esxi or hyper-v server without running it in a virtual machine ? no
Proxmox is good for what it is, a linux ( home ) server and hypervisor built on debian .
If I wanted to play games on windows 10 with a hypervisor with pci-e passthrough I would use ubuntu desktop running and kvm/qemu which is the way I do it now , but if I wanted to just play games on windows 10 I would just save all that trouble and run native.
