It's crazy that the Russian navy is pretty much only just recovering from the 90's now, but even then, we'll have to see if the anti-carrier doctrine really works, considering a Cruiser made for that purpose was only sunk by a land-based missile.

@@dimaleoniv7987 They've got a bit of good stuff entering their fleet now, but their spine is still based on old Soviet crap and their flagship has been getting modernised and repaired for years, with much setback and delay, so they still have a way to go. That said, they can hope for some combat effectiveness with the Gorshkov-class Frigates, some of their newer submarines, and hypersonic weapons, but those are in small number and realistically wouldn't shape an overall naval engagement. Hence, there's a glimmer of hope for them, but they're very much still operating mostly rust buckets.

@@commandercody6937 the show is coming to an end. Russia's economy repeats the 90's soon and will collapse under the burden of the war. Those Soviet rusty buckets are going to be all over the shores and their bases waiting for the scrap. Few modern ships aren't game changers at all.

Still, the soviet navy was never really good... They only had one aircraft carrier, the ship was the admiral khuznetsov, in use by the russian navy, made in 1989. The ship is the beginning was actually just a Kiev-Class Tactical Aircraft Carrying Cruiser, it doesn't make sense, but Kiev-class ships were the only ships in use by the soviet union that carried the yak-38. The kiev and yak-38 were like brothers. The khuznetzov carrier mig-29s and maybe some sukhoi, and although the kirov and slava class cruisers were good, the soviet navy didn't really have any other good cruisers, instead they had destroyers like the Kashin, Kanin, Sovremenny, and Udaloy. Also, the main ASW ships like the grisha III and poti-class ships barley had any, if not any, missile defenses, like the krivak-class. And the other big ship with a helicopter flying with it was a Moskva-Class large helicopter-carrying ASW ship carrying helicopters. It was made to hunt US polaris submarines in the open ocean, like the george washington-class SSBN, but became obselete very quickly one newer nuclear weapons were created. Nice montage though.
Oh, and they still used submarines from the 50s, like the Foxtrot, November, and Tango. They... even still used the first submarine created by the soviet after WW2, the whiskey class... I guess the had a kind-of good SSBN and SSN fleet, but they only made one SSB, the golf class... very bad, 0/10 golf class...

      1) Power of fleet isn't measured in quantities of aircraft carriers. Although Kuznezov was only one ship from modernised Kievs who entered service, there were two more that were laid down in 1985 (today Lyaonin) and 1988 (Ulyanovsk, that was disassembled on the slipway in 1992). Also there was a good modernisation potential in older Kievs, they could be converted into normal carriers, and there is example of modernisation like that. Baku was modernised and entered Indian service as Vikramaditya in 2013. So, if we don't count potential carriers that were planned and were not laid down, Soviet Nave would have 7 full-fledged aircraft carriers. Also, soviet carriers had really good anti-ship capability, especially 1143.5 and more modern that had SS-N-19s. Also, Su-33, Su-27K in project were ment to carry SS-N-22s, in air variant called Kh-41. Kuznetsov had 30-36 of them, Ulyanovsk 60. And a thing to keep in mind, even if older Kievs weren't modernised, they would get Yak-141 in replacement of old and bad Yak-38.
      2) Americans at the time (if we are talking about 80s and 70s) also didn't had fleet that only consisted of Ticonderogas and Spruances, they also had more older equipment. And, by the way, Kanin, Kashin and Udaloy weren't anti-ship, they were ASW, and in 80s and 70 first two not even main in fleet ;)
      3) And again about ASW. Grisha and Poti are MPK - which means Small Anti-submarine Ship (Малый Противолодочный Корабль). They are patrol ships of coastal zone, really small, and logically don't have big anti-air rockets. Main ASW ships in 70s and 80s were Kara, Kresta II and Udaloy, which had really good ASROC (URK-5 Rastrub-B) and 1155 had awesome sensors. Also helicopters, especially Ka-27 were good too. Yes, their missle defence was lightweight, but it was done because these ships should have worked in pair, or in taskforce with other ships, which had good AA capabilities, like Sovremenny. Also, Moskva was child of 1960s conceptions and because of that quickly became obsolete.
      4) Reason behind so many old subs was their quantity. They were old, yes, but their age doesn't reduce their danger, they could swim, could track targets and could fire torpedoes. But americans had to consider that, and protect every convoy and scour every corner of the sea, which distribute their power more equally and simplifies work for more modern submarines. This concerns also surface fleet, where every rocket was supersonic and dangerous, and almost everything that swim could fire these rockets. I am not even talking about hordes Tu-16s, 22s, and 22Ms, which also carried very good and dangerous rockets. Maybe Soviet fleet was not that good in role of power projector, but perfect in role of area-denial-fleet. NATO fleets wouldn't even dare to show up easterner of Iceland, because they would momentarily be detected (USSR had really good recon satellites, sea control aircraft and datalink) and met with plenty of rockets.
