Sick demo. Love how you explained the significance of that 2nd string. Was absolutely able to piece it all together with your explanation and direct way of playing it. I just love this tuning and for some reason it's where everything seems to click into place. Could've learned it in standard all the same, but it wouldn't feeeeel right like it does in ol' sawmill.
This could make me dust off my banjo! Beautiful (especially in sawmill tuning), and I love the 3/4 view of banjo neck (instead of mirrored--my brain never could transpose).
Thanks for putting up the "Waterbound" Vid, nice sounding Dobson too! You are a " Potter"?, Keep'in clay out of those wound 3 and 4th strings is a chore. Clay has been my life for 40 years. Now it's those darn Banjos! JB
After playing this a few months I have stuck on Rambling Hobo Tuning for myself and ultimately what I think Dirk is using in his clip but Sawmill tuning is great because it gets there and is a bit more treble and higher up the string tension ladder.. Years later ... Dirk is playing Cumberland Gap Tuning (fDGCD ) at E ... eC#F#BC# .
Has anyone managed to write down some tabs for this arrangement? Ive been trying to figure it out but I'm just not to the point where i can do it by ear yet. thanks
On his studio recording ruclips.net/video/H3CYCXFVEEQ/видео.html Dirk plays a low B which sounds like he is in regular sawmill intervals of f#BF#BC#. Mind you that makes the little slides he puts in a bit of a challenge (for me, anyway) so it could be another tuning. However In his performance with the Transatlantic musicians ruclips.net/video/1MAMu3LHIYA/видео.html and here ruclips.net/video/aK8hzwXonhM/видео.html we can see that he is using the tuning with the 4th string at C# as you have rightly deduced. I'm guessing that playing with the other musicians it just reduced his workload as the subtleties would be lost anyway. Now to figure out the fiddle tuning..
Thanks so much for all this great information for everyone coming here .. I have been playing this in sawmill with a lowered fifth string out of E for quite a while now .. I love Dirks take on this .. So cool on his record with fretless .. That one is my favorite !! All the best , Guy
Yes Dirk wrote this ..If you search his name You will find his version from a cd here on YT .Above is a link to the take he did in Glasgow .All the best , Guy

Great Guy, thanks for doing the vid, brilliant as normal. You have an incredibly authentic "old time" sound which I just love
Fantastic rendition Guy. Your voice is perfect for this tune. Novice banjo player myself, getting back into it recently. Subscribed. Thanks!

does he play a fretless banjo or just nylon strings? his recording sounds smooth in the slides
On his record he is playing Frettless in Cumberland Gap Tuning (fDGCD ) at E ... eC#F#BC#
On the video, Dirk is playing a Riley Baugus steel string with the Transatlantic Musicians.
Oops. I looked again, He may have nylon strings on the Baugus banjo.
What kind of strings you using?
Nylgut classical strings
So did Dirk write this song? Theres another old folk song called Waterbound but the lyrics and melody are different. Im so confusious

Thank you, I like this video as well as Dirk`s song and the old folk song.
