I still have a ways to go (I do broadcasts from home), but I appreciate this video. NIce to have a person who speaks in laymen's terms. Too many talk like they're writing a doctoral thesis on audio engineering.
Just purchased my 286s today and I’m going to pair it with my SM7b to really upgrade my audio quality on my twitch stream (I was using a blue yeti) and I am SO excited to play around with this. Really informative video! Thanks a ton!
I plan to get this in the future and make my Fifine AM8 sound a thousand times more sexier. Right now I'm living by with OBS, put some filters for my mic, and using VB cable drivers to output the monitoring audio into it, which I can then re-route into any game or software where I can select my microphone. Catch is, there's about a noticeable around 1 sec delay.
Wow thank you so much. This was such a simple explanation and demo. It makes it really easy to learn both directly and indirectly as far as what I should be looking into for my audio recordings, and more importantly, why I should be looking into certain equipment.
Just purchased a Webstation Desk and Neuman TLM 102 , this will be perfect for my set up. Really appreciate the video and really showing and demonstrating the features, thanks so much.
I've enjoyed using the DBX 286s so far as I'm learning audio. I am going to try out some of your settings to see how I'm doing ironing out what is best for my voice. Thanks for taking the time to make such a down right crispy film with some killer content ~
I bought this for my podcast as well, thank you for the video, it helped me choose some better settings. I had a couple Behringer compressors and pre amps before the dbx but I returned it all because one, both items were defective, and two, Behringer has the most negative reviews I have ever seen. The build quality of the Behringer stuff is also complete trash. I LOVE this dbx so much! Thanks again.
I had the avalon 737 and the Aphex 230 channel strip, but I ended up with the dbx286s back in 2016 and I'm still very happy with how it sounds! good video btw!
Great video. I have bought this Dbx286s but don’t know how to connect it with my zoom H4n pro and Shure sm58 mic. It would be really nice and helpful if you could do a video on that. As your videos are precise and to the point. Thanks in advance.
I bought 2 DBX's years ago (mainly to gate my co-hosts heavy breathing) and I've never been completely happy with the sound. I wish your video had been available when I bought them! I'm about to buy a RodeCaster Pro. A couple of the knobs on the DBX's have corroded and don't turn anymore. I'm also curious to see if the RodeCaster improves our sound.
Nice video! This is a nice piece of hardware. Was going to upgrade to the DBX 266xs as now i just use a zoom h6 and work with the audio in post, but but this seems to be a step up and a set it and forget system. Love it! Thank you for the help.
Great to find this. I have the dbx 266XS Dual Compressor/Gate and I believe it should work similar. I never used it, as it was left in my storage unit. I plugged it in, but have nothing to test it to sell. But upon plugging, no lights at all come on. Do these have a way to find out if it's dead. Should at least one light somewhere be lit up?
very good, got my unit yesterday, and played with it for a couple hours, and figured most settings and how they worked (amazingly almost had close to the same knob settings he does) but this helped clean up my brain with facts and understanding the deesser and the 2 chan eq. and wow, yes, no need for a cloud lifter.. i had one and i have no use for any gain knobs with this and that inline hehe
Brilliant demo... if I hadn't ordered one hour before I saw this I would have ordered right away. This is how demos should be done... listen and learn everyone else!
WHAAAAAT? I've been watching your In the Blues videos for YEARS and just now stumbled upon this channel due to interest in the DBX. Do you think this would still benefit with use on an apollo twin, or are the apollo preamps better than what is offered in the DBX and just use plugins for compression etc..? Just subbed, you're the man Shane!
I have an Apollo - I have a 286s before I go inn to it! So nice because its all pre-set! I have a mic that really needs that DrEsser ...And the gate because I don't want to use my tub as a booth! Yes you could get plugs inns ...It would likely take a few to get this sound...I really like it because I can set up my chain and know the mic is clean before hand!
I've had my 286s for some time, the only issue I have is with a low output mic (like the Podcast&Procaster, I have both) is that I run the preamp near Maximum . To get round this I use a small Mic preamp (Behringer Mic100) connected on the Line input . The setting on the input gain is now on 0db and I control the input via the preamp. The behringer Mic100 is a good little Valve amp in its own right but added to the 286s its now something else.
Unity gain, dbSF, gain staging, calibration are all terms/processes to name a few to 100% know and understanding in audio to remain "safe" while working with audio.
Got this and my sm7b needs ALL the gain on the very first dial which surprised me. I know you say it doesn’t need a cloud lifter but I tried one and couldn’t get any sound
The density function on the compressor is you attack and release time. For vocals, you would probably be better off at a higher level. Probably around 7.
I like the 286s. I daisy chain it with the Aphex Channel preamp. I use the Aphex Channel for the EQ and the 286s for the gate. The gate on the Aphex Channel sucks. Using both preamps together, my sound is amazing.
Thanks I just bought this because of your video! I'm also using Rode Procaster mic with Behringer UMC 204HD interface and new MacBook Air. Although all sounds pretty good, i'm not quite hearing the sound quality like yours. Maybe my expectations are too high for Rode? My UMC gain is middle, DBX gain +45 / output 0. Still sounds a tad tin-y. I have good quality cables/adaptors too.
Thanks for this. Believe it or not, my salesman at Sweetwater never mentioned the dbx or the similar Behringer processor. I'd asked him if there was a unit to help me with sibilance, and he was basically no help. If you can, would you also do a run through with the Behringer unit?

Love your video and info on the DBX 286S. I have a question about the 286S. I'm a Newbie in my Voice-Over endeavor. I'm currently rebuilding my recording booth due to too much background noise with what I originally had set up. I use a Rode NT1A and Scarlett Solo. I do not stream yet. My question is would it benefit my signal chain to include the 286S when recording for VO only to be post processed?
Excellent review. A fundamental (may be even a stupid) question. If i connect a condenser mic to DBX 286s, with the Noise/Gate, will i be able to control the background noise?
Always, always, always calibrate your gear; it's called "Gain Staging". To stay "safe" is to manage the levels of audio through the signal flow. You always want the optimal amount of signal to flow in the analogue stage without introducing noise or distortion(some distortion is taste based).
First of all, thank you very much for the time and all the effort that you have invested in this video. I am new to the audio recording for voice over and just started to look into good set up as i did not like the sound i was getting when voicing videos or my channel. I am kind of confused by your video as i actually prefer the sound from the small mic on your shirt to the sound of the big mic that you are using in the video. I wonder if anyone can answer this. Is it normal for an SM7b to require the gain on the DBX to be turned nearly all the way up to get two yellow lights on level? Mine does this, and I'm wondering if I should put my booster back into the chain?
Yes, those mics require a lot of gain to operate. Most people run a SE Dynamite or Cloudlifter in their signal chain to boost it up. The SE Dynamite is the better option.
OK, I'm confused because I tried initially with a Klark Teknik between two mic cables, but no signal gets through (no LEDs). Are the Se Dynamite or Cloudlifter a different kind of equipment than the Klark Teknik?
Hello, you would need to first power the unit. After that you need to plug your microphone into the input on the back. Once you’ve done that you need to bring a line out from the output and into one of the inputs into your Focusrite 2I2. I hope that helps and wish you luck! Goodbye.
How do you like that Procaster mic with the dbx? I am torn between getting that and an SM7B (for voiceover and singing, with a bass/baritone voice). I already have a dbx 286A (older model of the 286S), and would get an UAD Apollo Twin as an interface.

I have a room that isnot treated or sound proofed I wanted to get Rode Nt 1 but all reviews show it picks up alot of ambient sound.... And so I was them reconsidering getting Shure sm7b mic because it doesnot pick up alot of background noise kindly advise
Yes, you can set the Expander to a level that helps reduce noise under a certain threshold. If the noise is really bad you might want to make it more of a hard gate. Check my review on the Rode Broadcaster it shows you the difference between a dynamic and condenser mic. I just posted it :)
Brad Jennings Maybe I can shed some light on your question. There’s another video from a broadcaster that uses a condenser microphone (Neumann TLM 103) with this unit and the noise gate works great! He had a acoustically treated room but still, it worked great.
Is there a compressor better than thid please let me know asap. Im looking for a compressor but i wamt the best 1 and very easy to use. Someone told me to get a compressor with a gate limiter. So give me the names of the best compressors so i can make music ?

Yes, you can set the Expander to a level that helps reduce noise under a certain threshold. If the noise is really bad you might want to make it more of a hard gate. Check my review on the Rode Broadcaster it shows you the difference between a dynamic and condenser mic. I just posted it :)
Hi, is anyone getting a bit of a buzzing sound when you put your ear to the dbx286s, its only plugged into the mains, any info would be good. Thanks
don't put your ear on the dbx286s.
impressive
About the only thing not covered is what connectors etc are on the back.
great
How does your condenser work on this with the noise gate? Is it usable?
Brad Jennings Maybe I can shed some light on your question. There’s another video from a broadcaster that uses a condenser microphone (Neumann TLM 103) with this unit and the noise gate works great! He had a acoustically treated room but still, it worked great.
👍👍👍
Is there a compressor better than thid please let me know asap. Im looking for a compressor but i wamt the best 1 and very easy to use. Someone told me to get a compressor with a gate limiter. So give me the names of the best compressors so i can make music ?
🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
انه جهاز رائع حقا يا إلهي
So do you just leave it on in all the time or just unplug it at the end of the day
@@tristengrant I run all my gear thru a Furman M8X2. I bought a togle switch for the front outlet and plug the dbx into that. This way when I turn on the Furman the dbx is off until I use the toggle switch
you could plug it into a power strip and turn it off via the off switch on the power strip
This or your behringer?
hey! so I got the shure sm7b and if I want it work and sound great I only need to get the 286s? I don’t need a cloudlifter or anything?
Yes, check out the Podcastage video on the 286s
