The fact dude is one of the best trumpet players on the planet who can also play piano like that is too much for me. Arturo Sandoval is legendary!! Awesome!!
Most of it is knowing harmonies, what sounds good and having an amazing feel for the music. If you got that down translating it to another instrument is not thaat hard.
My guy. On so many levels. The piano time was superlative, again, shows what an incredible musician he is. As another frustrated french horn player, boosts my ego, that he sucks as badly on the horn as I do. He is so humble, in spite of ruling the trumpet community for 40 years, as one of the greats. And like him, give thanks to God, and bend my knee in prayer, that both he and I can enjoy the true pleasure of just making people happy, with what we do. Played a gig Saturday, that among others had a dozen kids out on the dance floor, under 6 years old, just rocking to the beat. Nobody has to be taught how to dance, especially to toddlers, just comes naturally.
As a former trumpet player, French horn player and wind band conductor and teacher I LOVED this entire too-short program! Bravo to both. So much MUSIC!!❤️
I have watched thousands of music videos on RUclips, and this his definitely the best one. Arturo is very inspiring, a great musician. I loved his piano playing at the end. Brought tears to my eyes also. Thanks for this, Sarah
Sarah, you should get an award for the quality of your presentations . Such a treasure you are presenting this world treasure to an adoring community of musicians. Thank you. so much to you and Arturo.
Estimada Sarah !!
Arturo Sandoval, one of the great musicians that this world has given, also a very noble person, and the woman who has Sarah Willis here by her side is an excellent woman, with a woman like this by our side, any musician would be inspired to play heavenly music. Greetings from Spain...
Arturo the best. I am learning trumpet in my 42 years. I Love how Humble He is and the wisdom and experience he transmit is clear and deep. Thank you very much.
This was absolutely beautiful. The learning from this guy, the little practice toys, and the ending classical improvisation on Oscar Peterson's piano. I have passed this on to my friend from elementary and high school, who played in the French horn section of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra from the 1960s to early 1990s, Ralph Hotz. I played the horn in our high school orchestra but never, never approached Ralph's talent.
I just found your channel Sarah. The interview was extraordinary and what Arturo did on the piano was moving and incredible! Glad to hear Arturo talk about low notes. I'm a bari sax player and I live in the low register and love it.
Great horn hangout Sarah! Favorite parts were many! - did especially love that Arturo dropped the name of the most recorded brass player ever within 10 seconds of picking up his 8D haha! Arturo you are a force of nature keep doing what you do!!
Thank you for the interview with a wonderful musician and a simple man who says always that we could be the true life: No secret to be a musician or another worker, you must anytimes work, practice with always pleasure.
Hey Mahler 5 Arturo, in London in the Pro brass shop in 1988 you tried my DEG Signature trumpet and I showed you that Mahler 5 for the first time - "This, is a big solo?" you said, and then you took it up the octave at the end!!!! More power to you old friend!
Hola Arturo!!
I could've watched another hour! Arturo is both humble and a musical genius on so many levels. He appreciates life! He's arguably the greatest trumpet player ever... and I've seen him in a flannel shirt just checking out young players at Charlie O's in Van Nuys!! (He discovered his longtime sax man Zane Musa there r.i.p.). And then you'll hear him on trumpet playing the most amazing rendition of The Star Spangled Banner at Dodger Stadium... and on PIANO w/ his big band at the Hollywood Bowl the next day! This was a great interview. This 30+ year trombone player just subscribed!
I do not understand why everyone asks Arturo Sandoval always about the high register,he has a sound in the middle and low register simply amazing.I would talk to him about everything except the high register, sometimes we forget that the music we play is the 90% below the acute DO.
Daniele Romagnoli remember a lot of students are watching. My son is trying to expand his range so that part of the conversation is valuable and interesting.
1:11:40 So funny how most people don't know know how much of a musician Arturo Sandoval is. I saw him live last month and was just as, or even more, impressed by his piano skill! He's a treasure. (Btw, he walked in just after me when I entered the Blues Allet building. When I turned around, I was in awe and said "my hero"! He then immediately gave me a hug. Great guy!
Love this SO much. Sarah is always awesome, and Arturo's love of music and the trumpet is infectious. He can't keep his hands off it. Thank goodness. This is GREAT! (volume pretty hard on Handsome Tim's mics, though!)
Hello Sarah and thanks for the interview. Can you please tell me what Clake's book is the one on the video? I have found the Elementary, Technical, Characteristics and Seting Up books and can't find the 1st exercise Arturo is using on the video in any of them. Thanks
Wat een in de kern bevrijde persoonlijkheid , heeft veel te geven vanuit die kern , alle in aanraking komende mensen, deze zuivere krachtige positieve klinkende trilling , with a great smile.
high c...double high c...triplr high c scale on a big bore trumpet and deep mouthpiece ???! damn! And he never practiced high notes...its not just hard work and dedication....its also called natural gift. great interview Sarah Willis! Arturo my fav trumpet player! I watched it all!
Very cool!! Sarah, come hang out with the horns of the 82nd Airborne Division “All-American” Band at Fort Bragg, NC!! We would love to have you visit with us!
Very nice video! Great to see Arturo on Hornhangout. By the way Vilnius is a capital of Lithuania and it's not in Russia. Dokschitzer lived there in his late years. Cheers!
i listened and recorded voice of america in the 1950s in the UK and have Willis Conover introducing Mingus ah um with my hero Rolland KIrk.. i still have it .
for me the interesting part begins around 47.10 where he talks about practicing and the right mindset about it before, he demonstrates how you can play many different sounds with the same equipment. it's about the imagination of the sound BEFORE you play
As always... Sarah's interviews the best of the best...Maestro Arturo Sandoval! Gracias por compartir sus conocimientos de parte de todos los miembros de TPM (Trompetistas del Peru para el Mundo) facebook.com/groups/193695527475892/requests/?notif_t=group_r2j¬if_id=1461295892441828
25:10 Oh my God! IRAKERE played at Carnegie Hall, where is the recording where is the film???! If you haven’t heard the CBS albums treat yourself, and believe me people were falling out of their chairs in that front row at Carnegie Hall that day!
how lovely to see some DUTCH on the poster at 01:10:47.... hehe Arturo... muy bien y muchas gracias.... no questions... just airflow :) see you in the Netherlands some day!
What he says about the most important thing about tongue production is the imagination, picturing the sound in your head, because if you don’t do that once you start the sound it’s really unlikely you’ll be able to instantly alter it to fit the picture without sounding awkward or distracting. So it’s kind of a preparation thing where the mind and body work together to be ready to produce the sound that is heard or imagined, or as I like to say “EarMagined” (a word I recently coined).
I’m not surprised that he loves the Bosendorfer sound! My favorite pianos to, and a very famous pianist who I follow and have followed for years, Valentina Lisitsa, prefers them or a highly modified Steinway. She said something like the Steinways have “too much teeth“ which I totally agree with there probably made for those hard of hearing and the back rows of the symphony hall but Bosendorfers are much more musical in the right hands.
un des plus grands musiciens du monde nous dévoile toutes les cordes à son arc trompette géniale pianiste hors pair quel grand bonhomme quel son quel feeling merci merci je me joinds à Sarah pour verser des larmes de bonheur
I really enjoyed watching this conversation. Thank you Sarah. 🎺📯
The fact dude is one of the best trumpet players on the planet who can also play piano like that is too much for me. Arturo Sandoval is legendary!! Awesome!!
he can play almost everything, saw him live and he just picked up the drums and started druming; he is also a very good singer
Most of it is knowing harmonies, what sounds good and having an amazing feel for the music. If you got that down translating it to another instrument is not thaat hard.
I have been "learning" the trumpet for 53 years, but that piano at the end brought tears to my eyes!!
I CONCUR!!!!
My guy.
On so many levels.

His ability to change his sound is outstanding! A living legend!
What a great horn hang out Sarah. Arturo is such a great guy and great musician.
As a former trumpet player, French horn player and wind band conductor and teacher I LOVED this entire too-short program! Bravo to both. So much MUSIC!!❤️
I am a sax and flute player and Arturo is also my hero! Thanks Sarah for being so authentic with him! We can feel your soul in the interview!
I have watched thousands of music videos on RUclips, and this his definitely the best one. Arturo is very inspiring, a great musician. I loved his piano playing at the end. Brought tears to my eyes also. Thanks for this, Sarah
