  • @haroldrull4943

Stunning...... it just set the standard for a soprano ukulele sound. No annoying mid-range frequencies, pure and a well balanced tone. Good review. Need to have one of that in my collections.

Rather a late comment here, but just now watched your two podcast appearances with Alex of SUS, really enjoyed them, and I was curious to ask if you've ever thought about trying your own hand at creating a ukulele. I realise it's a monster task, having looked into it myself, with all the gear that's needed, etc, but I really enjoyed watching a few tutorial videos, and thought I'd love it if I had the means to do so. I then thought about just trying to assemble one of those pre cut things that need to be assembled, a ukulele rather than a wooden boat or something, or maybe ordering wood pre cut, as based on traditional specs, and gluing it together myself, or just trying to make something out of an old oil tin can, something like that. I saw someone online 3D print one. Have you ever fancied giving it a whirl, at least in some way? I'd love to myself, even if it's a disaster.

I wholeheartedly agree with your review of the Ken Timms masterpieces. To me it's a classic heirloom instrument and, truth be told, I now own three of them in the hope my two children will play when they are older and I can gift them one each of the finest sopranos ever made. I bought the first two for a good price when he was more unknown. The third was a little more, but still cheaper than a vintage Martin. If I was forced to give a criticism of these instruments it would only be that they are perhaps not the best choice for a quiet strum when everyone else is in bed because they are so loud and punchy. It does come as a welcome surprise from such a little unassuming instrument.

Hi, Barry! You’ve played this Timms as well as a Wunderkammer Ike. Which one do you think is the best and why? I don’t want to start a war between these two little beautys, which a consider to be in the podium of all sopranos out there, but just curious. If you’d have to define that podium: which three soprano ukuleles would you list or put on there? Thanks!!

    • @GotAUkulele

Great review, and I completely sympathise with you here Baz - I feel exactly the same about my KT style ‘0’. It’s funny really - I was really strapped for cash when I bought it, so it felt like a risk buying thru eBay. I’d tried a vintage Martin, but I think it must’ve been a ‘Tuesday afternoon’ one, ‘cos the intonation was less than perfect. I then tried a new Martin, and just found it horrible/poor quality - truly, like firewood! ;). My KT is phenomenal tho’ - just like everyone seemed to be saying in reviews. I have a truly Pro instrument, which plays and records amazingly well. It’s a thing of understated/classic beauty too (as you say) - ‘an I nicked mine for £280 too! (a slow week for Ken on eBay). He wasn’t exactly over the moon, but hell - I am, after all, a starving musician... 🤪
Take care matey, and great review again, BK

Thanks. I’ve seen some people recently suggest that Kens are too expensive, but I beg to differ. He puts them up as a mix of Buy it nows (at 325) and some on auction. Some auctions go high, some low like yours. It’s a pretty fair system I think, and even at his higher prices, I think they are easily worth the money. This didn’t get the highest score yet on Got A Ukulele for no good reason!

Ha! That’s absol. crazy isn’t it Baz? - There are lots of people out there who are either crippled by a ‘bit of knowledge’ or else have no money when the chips are down. I paid £280 on eBay for mine (so I really nicked it right?) but, funds permitting, I’d’ve happily paid double for it without a second thought.
It’s phenomenal, and you’re right to be emotional about your one... 💗
The new Martins are awful - really poor quality timber, and just don’t play very well (in my view), plus we have to remember that the vintage style ‘0s’ were made for the Everyman - apparently extremely cheap to buy back in the day, and so there’s bound to be lots floating about now that, despite sounding great, aren’t exactly spot-on with the old action/intonation.
If we weigh all that up, then Ken’s are likely to be *better* than yer average Martin style ‘0’
That’s what I reckon anyway... Take care ombré

Wow, Baz, I've never seen you so excited about a Uke! I don't care for soprano Ukes at all, but this review turned my head. Now I think I actually want one of these.
So, does this mean that you'll be playing it so much that you won't do any more reviews?
