Mom had a 1972 Maverick with the 250 cubic inch straight six. It was a great car for her to run her errands and go shopping. I was the last kid at home so for three people it was fine for long trips too. Plus dad was a pretty good shade tree mechanic well versed in Fords so he could do any work on it needed. It didn't need much - very reliable.

@Natural Man I had a 74 Maverick, unmodified, with the 302 and in 1978, a Chevy SS driver made it apparent he wanted to race while we waited at a red light at the corner of Lumpkin Road and Hwy 56 in Augusta, GA. When the light turned green, I got off the brake just long enough for the tires to roll for about a 1/4 revolution, then floored it and left the SS behind as I rolled on down south. My buddy in the passenger seat, whom had let me know about the other drivers intent, was quite impressed.

The Maverick was cheapened to keep from competing with Mustang. Ford could have used sporty tail lights and a few body styling changes, upgraded dash and interior. Even so, Ford raised the price on Grabber to $400 of a Mustang so that more Mustangs would sell. Mustang II could have been better too, but fortunately it came just as fuel prices increased a huge amount so the Mustang II sold very well. Maverick platform is very similar to the Falcon so it isn't too different than the original Mustang.

a Saying I always used to say. "Friends Don't Let Friends Drive a Chevy" I had a 1966 Mustang for 33 years and I used to street race her in town all the time on the main road through town. Started out as a Stock 289 with a 3 speed. I added many things to help as time went on and I learned the hard way what I needed to be the Quickest car in town. 302 stock bore, with stock lowerend. The Cam, well I had several different ones in the years, I liked the FORD Cams. I had a 3000 rpm to 7000 cam and I advanced it to get more lowend, it moved the rpms to 2500 to 6500. I had 351 4 barrel heads with an offenhuaser Intake that I modified to run 2-2BBL carbs, it started out as a tunnel ram Manifold that I took the top off and made a Plate to fit to it, I bored the holes through the 3/4" aluminum plate with drill bits and whole saw, then I ground down until I had Beautiful runners. Anyway, She had All Kinds of Torque and coupled with a Toploader 4 speed and a 8" rearend with 4:62-1 Gears. I had many modifications to the body, to withstand the twisting power she had. I loved running the G-60-15 Supersports, they had Great Traction. My Car was very intimidating and I put down many Chevys and other cars. Oh Yeah, I got beat from time to time, But I won more races light to light. I also Built a 1970 Charger with a 383 Magnum, I built a few different car, but the FORDs were the Best. Chevy = "Cheap Heavy Entertainment for the Very Young" I loved blowing off a lot of unexpecting Muscle cars,

That looks GREAT! It still looks great! My old girlfriends black Maverick never ever had a single problem at all. None. Everything and I do mean everything still worked perfectly somehow.
It was actually very nice to drive believe it or not! I do not know which 6 cylinder engine was in it at all but it felt like it had more than enough power and ran eerily smooth. It was an automatic of course. Still had the original factory AM/FM radio. Those drum brakes took some getting used to that is for sure though.
It was a real time capsule. No rust, not a single tear in the leather seats(vinyl?)and reliable as a framing hammer. The vision out of the front and sides was far superior to most of what is out today.

Alan did a great job of preserving and improving this Maverick. My first car was a 70 Mav pretty base: white with the black roof, 3sp on the column, no AC but good vents, the straight 6, and that spartan dash with the open tray instead of a glove box. My big sister was given a new 74 brown 4dr AC/AT 302 with the fat bumpers for college as she had a 68 new Mustang in HS. I was a guy, so I bought a 70 in 1976 with my savings and dad had it painted amber metallic for me for $100 and reupholstered for $80. I spent my money restoring it mechanically as well as time in junkyards.
It was a cheap but simple car if maintained properly. The 70s successor to the Falcon. Eventually replaced by the Granada. Not a comfortable ride in the pre 74 models. My sister's had cushy seats, much more room and beige SHAG CARPET. Wow! It even had shag carpet in the dash tray. Ahh the 70s.

Had to do cut the firewall and trans tunnel to make it fit and cutouts in the shock towers to get at the spark plugs. Also swapped the rear end out of a Mustang II. A built 302 or a 351W and these cars will fly because they're so light. They're affordable too, and the parts are easy to get, because they share a lot of Falcon and Mustang parts.

I remember the “Maverick” and I ❤️ them. A friend of mine had one in 1971 with the 200 6-cylinder 3 speed in the floor. We had a great time with it. It was a clean and simple car, fast and rode great. In 1973, I almost bought one in Kleene, Texas when I was in the Army, but Uncle Sam sent me to West Germany and that was dropped. I still regret not buying that car.

It was basically Fords answer to cars such as the Chevy Nova and Dodge Dart, and was a replacement for the Ford Falcon. They also used it as the Mercury Comet. A neighbor of ours at the time bought the Comet GT version. But it was more show than go. We had a 64 Comet at the time which performed better. A disadvantage with the Maverick/Comet was it's limited V8 engine selection, as compared to the Nova and Dart.

With the leaking it always smelled musty and friends complained about it. But you know I look back on those days fondly now. Pretty versatile car that was rather inexpensive and could be an economy car or, with the 302 and some quite affordable mods, it could be a bit of a muscle car for someone on a ljmited budget. I always thought they were good looking, too. But in the midwest, ike almost every US car from the 70's, they seemed to quickly succumb to rust.

My brother and I both learned to drive on that car years later. We drove it quite fast sometimes, and never had an issue with the brakes.
Dad also bought a new Ford Fiesta in 1978. We learned how to drive on that one, too. Worst fading disc/drum brakes of any car I've driven fast! Everything I ever needed to know about brake fade I learned on that Fiesta! A 1978 VW Rabbit cost $1,000 more than a Fiesta. You know why? There was $1,000 more engineering in the suspension and brakes!

And yes , that was true; I remember doing a brake job (even as a teenager I worked on cars) and seeing the wider, bigger shoes.
