In the 21-22, Holtz had a really good year in Utica with a 51-point season. Coming into the 22-23 season, it was expected that Holtz would make the team. He played in 19 games scoring 3 goals and 1 assist. He also spent way too many games in the press box. I think the Devils brass held onto him for too long before sending him back to Utica for 14 games. That was the sign there was trouble in paradise. Holtz was told he needed to improve his skating and even trained with Jesper Bratt to improve his skating. He came into the 23-24 season and appeared faster but kept being shuffled all over the lineup. Both Lindy and Fitzgerald were extremely critical of his play or lack thereof. It was also said that both San Jose & Calgary rejected Holtz in trades for Timo and Markstrom. I still think the Devils should've gotten more, but when there is no market for a player, you have to cut your losses. There is a lot of blame to go around. I hope Holtz can resuscitate his career in Vegas.

Very well said! Even if the market for Holtz was almost nonexistent as seems to be the case the more I read, I just felt like this was pretty much as low of a "sell low" you could go on him. In a perfect world, if I'm New Jersey, I probably give it another year or two to try and squeeze something out of Holtz because, as much as he has struggled, I don't think he's been an absolute train wreck, but if you're convinced that things won't work out, then I suppose this was the move.
What I'm trying to say is, I'm not sure if there would have been harm or even much more of a hit to his trade value if you gave him another year or two to try and hit the potential that was seen in him when drafted. Like you said, there's a lot of blame to go around and now we'll see how it works out for him in Vegas. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)

What does this say about Kappo Kaako’s trade value

Good point, eh! It must be almost impossible for New York to move him right now

I don't know much about Cotter other than his scouting report on capfriendly. NJ needs grit and size in their bottom 6.
Holtz has potential as an offensive talent but he was a problem, if not a liability, in his skating, defense, and decision-making this past season.
I know other Devils fans are losing their minds but I think it's because he was a 7th overall. I mean, i get it, but better they trade him away than try to make it work when it isn't working.
I liked Schmid but they have at least 5 other goalies in their system now. I'm ok with the trade as a Devils fan.

You are 100% correct with every word bro.
This trade was a tough reality but it had to happen for reasons only real fans seem to know.
Holtz is not a good hockey player if you are trying to win playoff style hockey.

I’m sure they tried to shop him but they are specifically looking for a bottom 6 player that fits the style they are looking to play. They don’t need a top 6er and they don’t want a pick or prospect for holtz. They need a replacement for Michael McLeod because they are looking to win now while they have markstrom for 2 years.
The reality with Holtz is that the potential for Holtz to be a top 6 player has been running out. He can’t skate, can’t create for his line mates and can’t play defense. He will get you 20 goals as a 3rd liner but he’s a liability in every other aspect other than goal scoring.
The devils were looking to change their identity and rebuild their 4th line and bottom 4 of defense.
Fitzgerald has accepted the fact that he will never get 1st round value for holtz and NJ’s top 6 is already set so Holtz doesn’t help us as a pure goal scorer but nothing else.
The reality is he can’t give this team what they are lacking and fitz and keefe know that.
Cut your losses and at the some time fill a need rather than trying to regain the value in the form of a prospect or pick.
In regards to shmid there is simply no need for him right now and they have other goalies in the system that have progressed over him not even counting the kid they took today.
This is a painful trade to make but it has to happen if you are a responsible gm in win now mode

      What an entirely 💩 take.
NJ got fleeced to the core.
This is the worst trade I can ever remember in the NHL ...ever.

@@yoholmes273you are entitled to your opinion but you don’t know what’s been going on behind the scenes.
You don’t know why Holtz hasn’t earned top 6 minutes last year when he should’ve in a lost season. For all we know the guy may not even want to play here anymore.
Let’s see what he does in Vegas before you say something stupid
