Okay so, instapoetry. It's been all over the news and is a now firmly established genre I would say. But does it deserve all the negativity it's receiving? No! ... well actually, maybe. The thing is instagram is a game, we instapoets have to satisfy the algorithm, and if just a tiny thing is off, it doesn't get seen by our audience, so keeping things short is the key! But that doesn't mean you can spurt out anything that comes to mind, including basic sentences that people have been saying since before I even existed and credit it as your own 'poem.' (It's more like a quote, but that's opening a whole other can of worms.)
I'm probably about to destroy everything I spent ages building on instagram, and get so much hate for posting this video but hey, my instagram is failing now anyway so who gives a...
Let me know how YOU feel about instapoetry, and whether you agree or disagree with what I've said, I'm open for civil debate!

Okay so I fully expect some hate for this video, and am open to healthy debate... I just want to be clear... I am FOR instapoets and exploration of new mediums... But I do think we have to be careful when celebrating pieces on mass! If you're looking to get into poetry, GO FOR IT... But put some craftsmanship into it! 'I saw her and I loved her', in my opinion should not be praised as an amazing 'poem'. (Yes that's a real example of viral instapoetry) It's a mediocre every day statement.

Great video! I completely agree with everything you’ve said. A generic thought that thousands of people have probably had, isn’t a poem! I think you strike the perfect balance with the poetry you post on Instagram. Even if it’s not something the algorithm favours, at least you can be proud of what you’ve posted.

I literally stumbled onto your channel and I really want to read your books now!
I'm a newbie to the world of poetry--aka I basically have no idea what I'm doing--but my mind thinks in moments and single events and emotions...the list goes on. I tend to focus on things instead of looking at a bigger picture. I happen to buy a poetry book out of impulse and curiosity, and now I write poetry apparently!
I've already decided that I'd love to publish a poetry book someday! I'd really just like to get better at writing poetry, get some feedback on the kinds of things I've written, and figure out just how to get this book published (i.e. traditional or self-publishing).
There's a lot to do, but I'm absolutely excited! I will say, at least on the InstaPoetry topic, that I love the aesthetic of the poetry that's being posted. I do agree that a lot of it nowadays is not what I would call "poetry". I do like the short, thought-invoking, emotion-spurring poetry that is real poetry.
I've also started a writerly Instagram account that may or may not turn into writer vlogs, uplifting writer tips/advice, and poetry visuals... :)

In total agreeance with you.. I started following Insta Poetry about a year ago after discovering JM Storm and a few others.. but lately, my feed has been inundated with "poets" who literally just write half a sentance.. I like to feel fulfilled with poetry, I like what I read to create a picture and leave me thinking about the words I've just read.. Half a sentance which doesn't even justify being called a Quote just doesn't do it for me.. It's very sad that so many people are jumping on the poetry bandwagon .. anyone can write a sentence, but it takes a poet to write a poem.. 😊

I'm a big fan of J M Storm. Another good example of an instapoet. Depth, and craft = ✓.
I look for the exact same thing. It's a new medium so I guess the people who are really putting thought and work into are still figuring it out... The balance. It's just sad to see such great poets go unnoticed and then the most basic 💩 go viral...

This was really a great piece Adam. I’m very new to poetry and probably have been guilty of these sorts of reposts. As I read more and more poetry and understand more about this beautiful world I’d say I agree 100% is only that we relate to these one liners not that’s it’s poetry at all. I truly appreciate you and your honesty. Thank you for this clip

Thanks for this meaningful comment, wow! It's such a fine line. I guess it comes down to craftsmanship. I'm not for half arsed attempts... But put some thought and effort into it and I'll get behind it... The last thing I want is for people to feel discouraged in exploring poetry... But I DO want them to explore it with a little insight.

Totally agree with it! Nothing to be offended about tbh, all you write isn't poetry and it's important people know it! Everything has its flip side, but we do find great writing too, you've been my fav always!! And Insta is where I got connected to you! ☺

Oh definitely, as I say I'm FOR Instagram (when it sorts it's algorithm issues out) and the use of it to share work! I want people to feel encouraged, but the point is to put some work in and craft! And I want people to be able to realise what is a good poem from a regular everyday sentence.

I agree with you. I write... not sure what I write. Maybe it's poetry maybe not, but I don't' care. I write the words I want to leave behind. Bad writing is better than no writing. I know there are many better writers than me but I don't care. I get up and write almost every day. I'm following you and thanks so much for St. Vincent: marvelous.

Nothing is new under the sun. Here's a complete Langston Hughes poem:

Cause there ain't no sense in my being dead."

I checked Nick's Insta and I think he writes really good pieces. He writes "Real poetry"! But the thing about it .. is that I can't relate to his poetry. I have to be smart to get what he wants to say lmfaooo. I had to google a few words that I'm not familiar with. Like his poetry needs to explained by lesser people like us XD I think that's poetry all about?
If I compare his poetry like paintings... It's abstract and there's a lot of ways to interpret it

Agreed, there is no true craft or art in the majority of IG "poetry". Most are cliche, already-been-said statements. Just as you say! Yet they have many, many followers! I know you mentioned short attention spans. Can we also talk about smarts, or lack of? How to put that kindly?

I find it interesting as well the sort of things written that people just flock to read and repost. I find a lot of written words to have no depth or feeling behind them. In my opinion poetry should evoke feelings, the words should have texture and layers and allow for deeper thinking.
I found nothing upsetting in your video and have myself had those same thoughts once again thank you for giving voice to them.

I like how you’ve burned my candles
    Set them on fire
    Set them alight
My torch burns oh so bright
Like a firefly you come in the middle of the night
Like a firefly you shine so bright
The damp night clinging to your wings
Sweet sweat that clings to your feathers
Like sweet honey dew it drips down
A glistening angel flickering in the flame
A fire that can no longer stay tame
We both burn each other with our flame

Here here! I completely agree, a snippet is not poetry. Sadly many people do not do the ground work, nor join a solid poetry site such as 'All Poetry.' In addition I'd suggest folks read many works in both modern and postmodern areas.
"Poetry is brewed over time" in my opinion. Perhaps this is the new French courts Gary 'Le Instram'ee, or sheik'ism; and this to shall pass.... Great clip Gary regards ASPAR.... :)

Mass phenomenon is always problematic. Rupi Kaur's "poetry" came across to me a couple of days ago, and I thought immediately "What the f***** hell did I just read?". Her texts are full of common-place stuffs that appeal to a poor and obvious state of silly things. Then I googled for some definitions of what is "instapoetry", and I got quite shocked: instapoetry deals with an easy-writing-and-reading way to deal with "poems" intended for digital platforms. What?? I don't accept scrumbling art in order to give easy parts for those don't wanna make any single effort to reach the beauty of craftsmanship of litterature, music, painting, sculpture. I know that there are serious artists outside there making good instapoetry. The problem is common people just want easy things for their poor minds, and they don't wanna put any effort to reach new heights. I'm not against instapoetry for sure, but I WANT TO READ WORKS OF ART SUCH AS THOSE LITERARY GEMS BY KEROUACS' HAIKUS.

it's not poetry as I proved all over media there is nothing wrong with it because it is in its own category to compare them to the Beats is pretty moronic you can not possibly think Instapoets are on the same writing level as the Beats. Read my book Instapoet to see how it works. At least you don't think it is poetry

    • @AdamGaryPoetry
      @AdamGaryPoetry  5 лет назад +2

Thanks for your comment. But yes, I do believe it's on the same level as the beats... In the sense it is a new medium, filled with poets not giving a s**t about the norms. There's been multiple New York times bestsellers that are considered instapoets, and that's not something to be discarded. In short, there are talented poets killing it on the medium. And there are also poets not quite grasping the craft. I understand your frustration, but I'm getting the feeling that you're not quite as open to it as a medium as myself. Good luck with your book my friend!

@@AdamGaryPoetry i do agree that it is a new but that is the only thing that might relate to the Beats i appear in most of these articles as a dissenting voice but i write satire which was my research for the novel i am open to the medium for what it is a new category not real poetry i proved many times that it requires no talent going from 9k to now over 50k by posting the most trite universal blurbs i appreciate you discussing it you can see more on IG @tyypoet
