  • Welcome, and thanks for watching our video about the price trends and the most valued traits and New Zealand fine-wool ram sales in 2024.
    This video covers the following:
    Price trends
    Changes in buyer behaviour
Most valued traits, such as worm resistance and wool quality
Data and breeding values provided by vendors
    ******************************************
Sale prices and clearance rates were lower, due to a tougher economic climate. This mirrors a similar trend in Australia.
Buyers were more selective, generally buying fewer rams than in previous years. A few producers took the opportunity to buy additional rams at lower prices though, upgrading more of their ram team (replacing three, four or five-year-old rams with better genetics).
While rams needed to demonstrate consistently good data across traits, along with wool quality and overall type, worm resistance and wool quality got the most attention.
Buyers looked for lower WEC breeding values, reflecting growing awareness about drench resistance and how genetics can help overcome this challenge.
Wool quality remained highly sought after and rams showing colour in the wool were discounted.
Interest in improving resistance to footrot through genetics continues, along with maintaining the fat and muscle established within most flocks we work with.
Vendor investment in providing data for their rams highlighted significant improvements across several traits, including resistance to footrot and worms. Other labour-saving traits like DAG are starting to be included in more catalogues.
