I assume many of them where promoted to commander positions or training advisors in order to not lose their expertise. Willenbrock for example became commander of a U-Boat Flotille in Brest and later the commander of the „Fortress“ of Brest and after breakout from Brest a commander of a U-Boat Flotille in Norway. He is portrayed in the famous movie and TV-Mini-Series of the 80s „Das Boot“, he was commanding U96.
If any of you wonder, why so many of the commanders survived the war while 75% of all U-Boat-Men died, the answer is simple. It was an order of Doenitz (after he talked with Hitler about it) that his most experienced/successful Commanders has to take Positions on Land to keep their Knowledge and Experience for the following Commanders/U-boat-men. That saved many of them while their former boats and men died during the war.
Interesting two of the three best remembered (Schepke, Kretschmer, and Prien) didn't survive the war. Credit where credit is due, they had guts, every last one of them, as did their men
My uncle, Canadian Naval Officer and graduate of the Radio College in Ontario survived the war ....on loan to Norwegian tankers carrying oil and AvGas (Trieste and the north sea) He passed in 2005. Sent his Bonds and pay checks home to grandmother as he didn't expect to survive the U-Boats. They were in the St Lawrence when he'd sneak down to Newport News and load up on special loads, before the US even entered the war!
Whoh.....this is inaccurate.....the tonnage figures are wrong for some boats plus it misses the greatest ace of them all....Albrecht Brandi-RK diamond holder. Who the hell compiles this stuff?
Greatest of them all? Brandi?! This guy did not command a boat after 43 and by that time he had the oak leaves. He was honoured for a commanding role in the Baltic sea, he was NOT a U-Boat ace. He did not even make 50000 BRT, where the hell do you get your info from?!
WHAT??? Es hat immer eine andere Deutschland gegeben! It is fact that just yelling Sieg-heil, no one earns Ritterkreuze mit Schwerten. They fought for Germany, not for party or party "golden pheasants" or Julius Streicher. Verstanden?
@@besthuskydog7330 No, it was not so ironic. Decisive reason was, that Hitler did not understand naval affairs, not at all. Onkel Adi was just a lance-corporal (Gefreiter), who crawled in Flanders muddy trenches. When he read Giulio Douhets book from air war, he got his insane idea of Blitz-bombers (Me 262 tragedy!). So, he didn't even consider Navy as an effective war-machinery. Stared just giant battle cruisers (with an hard-on). "How a lovely Panzer, in architechtual character and how tasteful gun barrel this 88 mm has." He said once when some new warmachines introduced to him.
I'm quite surprised how many of them survived the war, given the huge attrition rate on U-boats in the latter half.
I was thinking the same 😂
Same
Me too. 2/3 of everyone put out to sea never came home.

Both of my grandfathers also survived the war. They were the best comrades and I will never forget them. Many greetings from Germany
The background music is awesome. It reminds me when gladiators were paraded in in front of Caesar for approval.
Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock (179.125 tonnes) was the original captain from "Das Boot".
Thanks. That movie was a bit scary.

why not name the boats too?

How many people died... not soldier...
Correction, they were feared.
Dreaded even.
I can live with that...the Brits b4 the war believed submarines were 'dishonorable'...
@@Phalanx11right.
But naval blockades were honourable in their eyes.😂
May these brave men Rest in Peace.
The heros from deep sea 🌊 !
these sailors were real warriors and see men !! real adventurers !!
If you watch, most of them survived , that also means their capabilities in war to escape after attack.
Successful submarine commanders were the ones who got their crew and themselves through the madness alive.
Regarding survival rates, please note that some of them, like Kretschmer, were also very early captured.
Gunter Prien, my all time favorite 👍🏻👍🏻
Thousand years of Ruhm und Ehre.
Yes, he enter Scapa Flow!
oh I'm quite amazed at how many of them made it through the war, considering the high loss rate of U-boats in the latter stages.
You missed captain gerhard seehausen
Great Gallry😊
It is easy to be impressed about tonnage but, when you remember that there were humans on those hundreds of ships, it gives you another perspective.
Say it please about sovyet captain V. Marinesko, who who sunk "Wilhelm Gustloff" with 10t passenger, 9t died
@elbrover that was a coward act..an aunt of mine was on the gustloff..survived. family story her hair went white

yeah lots of enemy casualties
Robert-richard Zapp's name was appropriate.
A lot of them survived due to being posted to the training schools and clerical positions.
True grit.
How many ships remain after the war?
Wo bleibt Siegfried von Forstner?
80000 BRT. That's just not enough for this list, even though it is respectable.
Just how are these people rated? Tonnage or number of ships? Sorry, I do not grok the rating system.
The amount of knight's crosses 😅
Mostly sunk unarmed Merchant shipping leaving thousands to die.
Most of these men lived to become old men; considering 6 out of 7 German submariners were KIA.
tolles video aber bitte Albrecht Brandi noch ergänzen liebe Grüße
Tell us about him.
9 merchant ships (less than 23000 BRT total), two destroyers, one minelayer sunk.
So - no. He does not belong on this list.
All of them were german, not a Single allied or Otter axis Nation.
The title does say U-Boat commanders, so that rules out Allied submarine commanders, except maybe those who commanded Royal Navy U class boats.
All German.
They were the only ones usin U-boats.
@@frednone simply false
Counted only 7 who died during the war, supposedly having their boat sunk?
Kretschmer a coulé 47 navire pour 274 000 tonnes
❤❤❤
Tonnage is pure guessing.
Wolfgang Lüth was shot by his own after the war...
By mistake, by a inexperienced sentry.
