Thanks for your video. I'm having this "battle" with my psych asking how the hell my sensory overload and social struggles has anything to do with trauma. I'm undiagnosed and feel I was misdiagnosed with BPD. So it's a struggle really. I commend you for speaking up.

I believe many people, especially women, are over-diagnosed with BPD when it could really be autism. I’m a 32 year old woman that went through both trauma and felt like I spent my life masking, and Idk know If it’s just the c-ptsd/ptsd or also autism.

I've often wondered if there's a connection, as it's not uncommon for someone with an ASD to be parented by a narcissist who does not have ASD. I dealt with abuse too and had a neglectful family. I was also diagnosed Aspergers. It sucks because they give you a diagnoses that tells you pretty much nothing, and there's no support. Bless you. You're very brave and will help unite many.

No sadly autism causes things like emotions to set in very deeply, my trsuauma leavescne crying several hours everyday. The way our autistic brain over processes might be great for invention and understand things on a much deeper level but with trauma its vs much deeper set in pain

Ptsd is common 88℅ of autistic adults have it, however to be more precisely it over processes and turns PTSD into complex form

I've only watched for a minute so far but, it's already hit really close to home. I've suspected that I'm autistic for 5+ years, asked for an evaluation multiple times with this psychiatrist... But he refused to give me a diagnosis evaluation because he said exactly that. "Every person with a diagnosis I've ever encountered has got some traumatic past behind them". And "You'll only end up on meds and you won't get the help you need". And now I'm here, probably autistic and probably also with ADD/ADHD, 28 years old, on my way to economic disaster which could have been prevented if he would've just listened to me. There is so much grief in all of this. But I do hope to get the help and support I need now, and to repair myself from feeling broken and tied down by trauma. Because that's not all that I am. I am not just a result of my traumas. I am so much more.

This video had me crying at work - In my case - my father was abusively oppressive and narcissistic. My sister is NOT autistic like me but it still affects her today ( I'm 59 she'S 62). This all started before I my memories started about 3 1/2 years age. So I don't know what traits I may have had then. I do remember hand stims being corrected - I'm only 5 months since diagnosis and have so much more to discover about the true autistic me. It is almost traumatic to sort through all my memories. Don't get me wrong, It was my life's greatest blessing to discover I'm autistic - so I can finally be ME. I know I could have never discovered this. But I still find it difficult at times to not wish I found this 40 years ago.. or more! At least I would have been battling an opponent I could understand and have the self worth and self-love to have enjoyed the process much more than I did... Thank you Sara - Never doubt yourself or the value of your important messages. Hugs!

I have had the same experience. I’m 60 and an aspie...I have been ‘told’ it’s the trauma. But I have constantly pushed that being on the spectrum is my underlying state and the trauma is a result of overlaying my naiveness and parents who misunderstood my identity. I kept saying it till they relented and listened to me and not their criteria to fit me into a box for treatment. Being older I have learnt how to mask and cope but my aspie support worker specialist knew as soon as she met me and that was so confirming. I want to work with young girls on how to stay safe in relationships with men who see the naive traits and take over a young girl and abuse them. I have been there and I feel you...bless you.x

Abuse from multiple source's and it seems people target you more so with bullying because of you're hardships you already dealth with. Questioning everything we do is not fun. Thank you so much for sharing this. I was autistic before I experienced trauma, plus it helped me cope with sensory issues, especially dissociating. But I did experience a lot of trauma in my childhood and after it I began to notice that my mind began to wander more and it became even easier to dissociate, and I actually loved that part about myself, because I was able to have all sorts of fantasies and adventures in my head and then put it down in pen and paper and write stories. Autism for me is a gift.
The ability to dissociate and to split off from reality if things get too bad it’s actually a very healthy coping mechanism to protect protect the mind from sensory issues. There is nothing wrong about being autistic. Autism is a gift and I am proud of being who I am.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm only now really processing my trauma. My ASD diagnosis gave me the key to unlock and access it in a way I had never been able to in the past. Everything I heard and everything I tried was sort of like me, but never close enough to actually align. Although some of my abuse happened at a very young age, some of it came later and my vulnerability continued well into adulthood. Trauma doesn't cause autism, but autism can, I believe, make us more vulnerable and it interacts with trauma in ways that aren't exactly the same. My adverse childhood experience (ACE) score is apparently a 9 (out of 10). So I'm slowly working through that. As I recently tried to put it, there weren't two separate children, an autistic one and an abused one. There was just me, an abused, autistic child, and those threads are intertwined and entangled.

This story hit me because I have Complex PTSD and have had trauma all my life (abuse, neglect, r*pe and more) and my parents couldn't handle it and I always thought my issues where just me being damaged and unwanted. My parents gave up on me because I was too difficult. I'm 22 and only in the last month have realized so much of what I thought was mental health could and is autism (I still have psychosis, anxiety and depression) but this makes me feel so much more comforted by the idea that its not the trauma but my brain.

Once my son was diagnosed autistic, I started to question how I have grown up feeling. He is high functioning but struggles with keeping friendships and gaining healthy friendships (most are bullying him vs true friends). I was abused for years so I brushed it off as from the abuse. Now we are getting our 5 year old daughter tested for autism and we are 90% sure she is autistic. Now I am questioning myself, but scared to get tested as an adult. I have been told I have PTSD from the abuse from my ex but find it hard to trust a medical professional to get help much less be tested for autism. 😕

I'm 41 and I am in the same situation as you are. Thank you so much for this video, this is actually what I needed to hear today, as the gaslighting keeps on happening over and over again, and some psychiatrists are just so eager to put every single darn thing I can exhibit on traumas.
It's not that I am rejecting what complex trauma has changed in me, my mechanisms, my sensitivities, my reactions, etc etc, it's that I know that a lot of these things were there when I was a toddler, I was just like that from the get go, and it is so infuriating and unjust to hear all the time "it's the trauma", with such infantilisation, when it is NOT the trauma.
We know ourselves, we have a lifetime of studying and understanding our mechanisms behind us: We are experts when it comes to us.
    And to trauma AND autism.

I wish there’d be a film, directed by Quentin Tarantino, about autism called “Riot”. When a group of gobblers kidnapped those with autism and kill their parents and other witnesses. The gobblers takes the autistics into a hidden and unlicensed asylum. 4 runaways escaped, 3 became professional hitman to hunt down the gobblers who killed their parents (there were a lot of bloody deaths, but all of them were bad guys). The cops, who were on the runaways side, didn’t arrest the hitman because they know that the gobblers were trying to kill them.

As a human and as a woman, I'm very proud of you. I am not autistic, but I can relate to you in this video in many ways. Non autistic people (well, at least me!) can be overwhelmed and have brain fog and mental blocks and it's not unusual for me to not understand myself. So thank you for encouraging me as a person even though I came to learn more about my son who is actually autistic.
Regarding autism and trauma, I thought I'd share with you why I think that some "autism" can be caused by trauma:
Autism is experienced because of a difference in brain development and/or brain chemistry, right? Trauma, especially extended trauma or extended neglect such as social or sensory deprivation also causes brains and a body's chemistry to develop atypically. My son who is autistic spent his first few years in severely deficient circumstances (an orphanage where he was left due to his other diagnosis received at birth). It is impossible for me to determine what of his autism was inborn and what was formed as a survival skill in those conditions. For example, when there is no touch or social stimuli, turning to stimming is the natural survival skill and sensory processing disorders are rampant. Not being spoken to causes social and speech parts of the brain to underdevelop. Etc. etc. I experience a lot of grief as I think of the conditions he endured, but I am so proud of him for enduring! Learning to meet him where he is and understand him as he is... in his "atypical autism" sort of way is a lifelong journey.
Also, just thank you. Thank you for sharing so articulately and giving me a window into my son.

For what it's worth, I don't think you're damaged. I feel like we are all damaged in some way, but you at least have the courage to open up and help others who don't understand what autism is. I still have a hard time grasping what it is. Our 7 year old was diagnosed autistic, and his siblings don't get it either. But I use your videos as sort of a teaching tool for them, and myself. I applaud you. And thank you for helping us.

Trauma causes autism. The trauma could’ve been experienced as a child or even within the womb as a developing fetus. These are the most fragile and developmental stages of life, therefore by far the most vulnerable of stages of development of the nervous system and brain. Theoretically, a child could experience a very harmonious childhood (not statistically likely), but have been traumatized in the womb, therefore have developed a highly sensitive nervous system and higher fight or flight reactivity. Wouldn’t this be more empowering, practical, and logical, than to say someone with autism has some biological “defect” that has unknown origins? It’s a great way to label & put a hard classification on people and call them somehow “weakened” and “defective” and a lifetime of making money off their “symptomology”, always needing fixing and maintenance, a lifetime of expensive therapy and all sorts of pills that never truly fix or address the problems, only to create a culture and mentality of comforting and constant enabling. I can say this because I can see aspects of myself to a degree when I’ve been caught in somewhat similar mindsets, and still teeter with it. I’m not autistic, and I’d never choose to stick such a label on myself coming from this perspective of detached understanding, although I would consider myself within the neurodivergent spectrum, for the sake of a framework of self-understanding. I’ve definitely experienced many characteristics expressed by those that identify with ASD, highly sensitive/ empathic, which also stems into channeling, and I’d experience things like “echolalia”, this “condition” I’ve just discovered. I experienced that all my life until throughout my 20s, while it decreased and essentially went away over time (now in my 40s). It dissipated over time because I got more grounded in myself, and the intense anxiety and flight or fight response eased up with essentially a lifetime of “exposure therapy”, such as if you have an intense fear of snakes, gradually you expose yourself to them to the point you can actually hold a non-venomous snake with no anxiety. You face your fears and you toughen yourself up, which doesn’t mean you’d have to lose your sensitivity. When you’re enabled by a culture of acceptance, you stay there because it’s familiar, and we don’t like to change and adapt unless we are forced to. When we’re enabled, we identify and incorporate it into our ego identity and further investigate the subject matter and reinforce the emotional chemistry over and over again and make ourselves believe and further solidify this identification with these characteristics/ persona. Once you identify as being autistic, you are unchangable, because you “are” the problem. But when you are able to understand you can dissociate from the identity of it, and that certain traits are malleable and not affixed (similar to that of being able to lose weight), you understand the characteristics aren’t you, and you can adopt new characteristics you’d prefer to adopt. Don’t hand your power away to industries like psychiatry and psychology. The practitioners have good intentions, but the industries have misinformed us all to keep us disempowered in order to keep feeding them.

My daughter has autistic tendencies and we are fighting to get her assessed atm and to this day we have been asked has she had anything traumatic happen in her life and if so that could be why she is behaving the way she is.

my sister attempted suicided because her boyfriend at the time was cheating on her and living a double life and told the police I was the one that caused her attempted suicide. How does a child cause an adult to want to commit suicide? denial? How was it my fault? I was blamed by my family for it but they don't even give the reason why. These people are stupid and abusive. Easy to scapegoat a child with autism rather than face reality.

You're repressing a lot of hurt because you're afraid of experiencing it but you should with proper therapy because it is making it hard for you to function. Also you have the right to pass through the victim hood stage. You're not being abused anymore and you need to stop feeling sorry for yourself because that will prevent you from closing that wound. Reach out to your community to elaborate a diagnosis standard, you have an insight into the disorder that other people lack. Social change that used to take a century to happen is now going on because of internet and social media.

me and my brother are going through something like this at the moment where we are realising why we are different and what actually happened back then. I feel like our environment has possibly cause the autism and aspergers because the traits are so interrelated to the events that went on. How do you all think about this? Is it possible that weird/alternative people are just a different form of personality which stems from our environment we grow in? I feel like the Drs can never be certain because the information is so varied and keeps changing.

There are a lot of weird people with rather poor social skills out there. I think you cloud label many with different alphabets if you'd like, still people are very different even if they get classes with a certain label.

😥😥.. I pray you find healing and new ways daily to not just cope but rise high. High above these difficulties.. in Jesus name amen. I put this on because I'm feeling depressed because I do everything I can do , at least I think I do to help my aspi husband. What sux is that I think I'm aspi too and I feel so alone , no mom or Dad to turn too. I'm 47 but inside I feel very young most of the time . We've raised 3 children together and I've been with my husband 29 yrs.. I prayed today as l looked up at the sky that Jesus take me with Him. I'm so tired , I play this role constantly like I do feel very much a nurturing mom and woman but I also feel like I'm in constant need to be held like a baby ..

I love having Asperger's. I can over think and put myself in someone's shoes. Study folks is my jam and artsy fartsy stuff, also. I love thinking like a judge or lawyer type. I can't believe how small minded a lot of folks are and how they just believe the first thing they here, specially if uts negative about someone or something. They don't even google answers! In my alone time world we are getting smarter and they are getting dumber.
