I always get inspired when visiting big cities. But when i am at home, i loose that inspiration "spark" after a time. But your videos really help me to lift my ink pen and do some drawings when i rewatch them. So a big thank you for your videos!
This used to be my issue. I would study a subject & then when I was ready to illustrate it I always began with detail first. I've never had formal art education (unaffordable where im from), talent, passion & life emulation only go so far without tips/SOME kind of instruction. It wasn't until I found your channel a few years back did I finally start improving _further & faster_ . I can simplify things down to shape, interpret colours, "chiaroscuro" and have a BETTER understanding of perspective etc. I wanted fine tuning and this is what I get from you, you make it an easy dish to digest. Still waiting on that watercolour how to book because my _God_ I know it won't disappoint!
I binged watching the urban sketching videos ,had to stop this one in the middle to say I appreciate the "DOT" method! It is brilliant and I never thought of it before!!!
This is outstanding advice, its so simple I am almost ashamed I didnt figure it out myself. Or maybe it isnt so simple after all, I guess the intimidation of starting a drawing makes the most simple of jumps feel like attempting to hurtle a building. My intimidation has almost completely withered away from watching your videos Alphonso, thankyou very much.
I came back for another bite from the apple of knowledge. You give a great class with a lot of advice for anyone who cares to learn from a master. Because of what I have learned from you I now tend to skip the pencils and go straight to the ink pen. My confidence has grown that much. Thanks again.
Oh man I needed this soooo much!!! I love urban sketching! I live in the Netherlands and I am going to Ecuador for 4 weeks to draw and take pictures :). Keep it up!!!
Ive been outdoor sketching for a couple months and was looking for a way to get beyond slavish copying and overwhelming detail. This series was perfect! thank you!
dots, little dots,... What a good trick to play with when you are directly drawing in pen! Thanks a lot for the reminder! My most difficult topic to deal with is simplification... I always get trapped in the details and how to make sense of not too clear information on the subject.... I will re-take a look of your book to find some clues :) Regards from Spain.
am saying thank you to you for your teachings ,I learnt alot from your videos and your book I got mine as early as march 2016 and it has helped me alot thank you again for the knowledge ( from the caribbean island of ST Lucia)
Been going through this series....this helps with my long term goal.....watercolor street scenes is my goal but watercolor is my nemesis. Ive ordered your books, and waiting for them to arrive....and I have been pre-doodling. Love to use ink, and with your books help, then i can run from there. Excited. My current art practice is portraits in graphite.
Thank you, I have started learning to draw not long ago, and I immediately love the look of pen sketches/drawings. Then I found your channel, and your videos have been really helpful and inspiring.
I just want to thank you, I finally got your book here in Brazil and it is awesome, very straighfoward! Keep it up with the good work, you are the best teacher I could ask for.
Im very amazed by you. Don't gonna lie, you are simply perfect teacher for me. Whenever someone started telling me about proportions I said "Yeah, yeah... Well I will do it how I has been doing to now". But you really let me think about it, make me listen to you and when I do step by step, line by line, what you do it's nearly perfect (can't be as perfect as you :D). Just please don't stop! I really need you and I dont know how I get your book, but I will get it, because I'm sure it's worth it! Your fan from the Czech Republic ;)
I'm currently into urban sketching. This video is exactly what I was needed! These tips will help a lot. I'm gonna grab a pen and try right now :D Thank you for great art videos!
Very helpful. Looking at buildings and street scenes kinda overwhelm me. Old buildings are beautifully, and now maybe I will try a few of them. ;) Thanks
As soon as you pulled out that photo I knew it was in Brazil! I wonder if other people have this 'ability' to guess the place when they see a photo. It's not much impressive once you get to know that I am Brazilian though ahah. But I never been to São Luiz!
Thanks a lot. Great tutorial as always. Maybe the next urban sketching tutorial could be how to add watercolour ? Thanks a lot for all these awesome tutorials :)
I'm shocked that you were in São Luis, Brazil, I was born there! I'm honored :) (it's not a very popular touristic destination) Thanks for the videos, they are really useful! (btw, I already bought your book, it's amazing!)
Watching you draw is so addictive and so soothing.... and inspiring (i feel like i can draw like that - only I don't :D - maybe because i sit and watch you instead of practicing :D :D :D
Great video Alphonso! Can you tell me, how do you decide when to add value and when to come back? It looked like maybe you outlined some area for shading later, but there were parts that you definitely shaded in darker earlier on in the drawing. Whats your thought process there? Thanks!
Can you also make a vid' were you show how to organize the pictures references pls cauz' that's pretty hard with more than 300 pictures and i don't found that gender of informations in internet, and that could help some of people.

I like the dot method as well. Clever idea, I already use it to make straight lines. You have brought it to the next level & it's so simple. Thanks.
Glad it helped
Thank you for giving more information than "Draw outline with ink then do details". Glad to see that your channel is getting lots of support.
+Offensive Artist thanks

We are so furtunate to have your thorough yet kind didactic style of teaching, these videos are excellent - thank you
the way you add texture to your drawings makes them look and feel so organic. wish I can do that with my pen drawings; they are just straight lines.
straight lines for now. Just loosen up a bit and kind of throw care to the wind as they say
That dot-measure tip was just so so vital! Thanks for this fantastically helpful video
Glad it helped
You're the best man, I learn so much. Thank you!

Great video Alphonso! Can you tell me, how do you decide when to add value and when to come back? It looked like maybe you outlined some area for shading later, but there were parts that you definitely shaded in darker earlier on in the drawing. Whats your thought process there? Thanks!
