All the Steadicam Arms use 6 springs going back to the 1970's. there is 3 springs in each arm section. The top and bottom spring are reverse direction based with 2 allen screws to tension them, the middle spring is there to actually support the weight. The top and Bottom spring is why you can run and the Steadicam gimbal will not move that much. Check out the steadicam forums they sell the older EFP stedicam arms there used and you can see them without the covers and see how the springs are installed. Maybe you could look at the Stedicam EFP and do a clone of it.
Still building arm and vest for Steadicams? You are the Master ! I tried making one , but do not have all the awesome machinery to do so. I would love for you to build me one!!!!!
i try not buy metal/aluminum from hardware stores bc it over priced, find a metal supplier or a scrap yard near you and look around the drop material section. they usually sell by the pound at discount price bc it has either been dropped or left over cuts that cant be sold at full price. i pretty much scavenge around and found what worked for me. the thickness is about 1/8 inch thick. use aluminum bc its lighter and just as rigid at steel. thanks for watching.
i get springs frm the home depot. can find them around the door hinge or the hardware area. make sure you get the right springs to match the weight of your camera/ sled
you can change springs to match the weight of camera/sled then adjust them til it works. this set up works well with my heavier camera. not so well for my dslr. i need to improve design for dslr
Hello Zieng, you're the man. Its amazing how you put this together and I want to ask if I can get one to buy from you. Please how much will it cost? You are doing a great job.
Hey bro, Loved your video. Could you please share the exact measurements and blueprint or it's step by step instructions for the same in description box please. Will help us a lot as I can see that you too want to people by making such video
hello friend, I really like your videos. Colombian'm fond of short films and your tutorials are my favorite thing is that I understand very little your language and hinder me certain things. I wonder if the videos have also plans to build your teams. where I can download them? Thanks and await your response.
Dude where did you find this 2 inch channel from the arm, Is it formed, or you got like this already? And the 2 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch square tube I don't seem to find it anywhere!! Do you have the thickness of this pieces? thanks great DIY
Can you adjust the spring rate against the weights of each different cameras+stabilizers? If it's available this would be the best DIY arm for STEADY, FLYCAM, and MERLIN!!! Greetings from Japan(^^)
How much did it cost you to build the arm and how much did it cost to make the vest. Im looking into building my own and wanted to know how much it will set me back
What scroll saw did you use on the smaller pieces? Also what blade did you use? I ask because I"m hearing that a scroll saw is not good with metals. I guess it depends on the blade huh? Thanks in advance!
How can you adjust the spring tension on this Diy Arm ? Because if it cannot be adjusted , this means it can be used only with some types of cameras that have the same weight.
i would like to share with you the arm and vest that i was making the last months… i quit! haha it didn't work.. but i have to say it seems to be a pro… even better than the pros :D
thanks i just found it on the pdf file of your 40$ merlin pvc arm. I am living in germany so i dont really know if i can get 'em there but i will try to build this too but how did you get the frame to look black? did you paint it ? and if you didn't do you think it would work ?
Hey dude thanks for the reply, actually I went for real metal supplier, and in all of the web sites that I visited and companies I called neither of those has this 2 inch channel. I think this was kind of formed, like custom made! And from the other parts the only one I found was the 2 x 1 square tube, this was the only one I found. What do you think? Thank you dude awesome turorial!
Thats good work. But no adjustment for the weight of your slide huh but regardless of that good work keep it up you'll be making your own big Time stuff soon. P.S. you might want to put some bearings that alarm
i'm not sure how much it cost me in materials for one unit.. i'm guessing about $100 give or take. I've been buying in bulk and enough to build several at a time. you'd have to do some shopping around. hardware, bolts and springs would cost the most. i bought drop aluminum frm the scrap yard. fabric, foam and plastic buckle frm the wholesale. tool on the other hand can get expensive. I used industrial machine but you can do the job with tool around the garage.
sorry if i havnt gotten back to everyone. i've been really busy working on a couple short films. im not selling arm and vest at the moment. i have been working on a better, cheaper design. and easier to build
What's up, buddy. Good night, that would be no way to tell me the measurements of each piece that you occupy. I refer to the planes. Not if possible, I hope to answer yours, greetings. Que tal, amigo. Buenas noches, habría forma de que me dijeras las medidas de cada una de las piezas que ocupas. Me refiero a los planos. No se si sea posible, espero respuesta tuya, saludos.

You are the Master ! I tried making one , but do not have all the awesome machinery to do so. I would love for you to build me one!!!!!
WOW, that thing is cool. I might build something like that. It would come in use full.
i try not buy metal/aluminum from hardware stores bc it over priced, find a metal supplier or a scrap yard near you and look around the drop material section. they usually sell by the pound at discount price bc it has either been dropped or left over cuts that cant be sold at full price. i pretty much scavenge around and found what worked for me. the thickness is about 1/8 inch thick. use aluminum bc its lighter and just as rigid at steel. thanks for watching.

could you modify the design by adding a cable with a pulley and treaded bolt, so that the spring tension is adjustable?
Dude..you are a great builder!!
Do you have instructions on making the arm and do you have it for the vest and or a video of the making of?
Hey man, it was not the application I was needing but the video is awesomly simple to understand! Great job!! :)
awesome man! would you share the blueprints of the project? I'd love to try and build one

NICE! keep up the talent that you have.

Good point...
there are different springs sizes you can get from the hardware store.. just make sure you get the ones works best for your setup.
+TheCraziestVampire All you have to do is change the spring to a stronger one
Marshal Akinkunmi will putting a stronger spring stop it from dropping to the ground when you add like 12 lbs to it??
Could you send me the specs on how you built this?
Awesome video...thanks so much for the DIY instructions.
i would like to share with you the arm and vest that i was making the last months… i quit! haha it didn't work.. but i have to say it seems to be a pro… even better than the pros :D
