I actually think the literal translation of the latin phrase is even more significant (at least in my amateur latin knowledge). Because the literal translation is amicus (=a friend) ad aras (=before the altars/shrines of gods), so it basically refers to the most important friend that one could have in the mortal life, more important are only the gods. And I think that reading is kinda sweet too
