As a child’s train set magically comes to life and the engines race to become the fastest in the world, Rusty the steam train has little hope of winning until he is inspired by the legend of the ‘Starlight Express’. Seen around the world by over 20 million people, STARLIGHT EXPRESS is an electrifying experience for all ages.
This was the only number from Starlight Express that was performed that evening, they could have just had Ray Shell & company in concert attire in front of microphones, but instead they stayed true to the nature of the show and did it all on roller skates on a comparatively small stage.
It would be nice to see Ray Shell playing Papa along with Reva Rice's Mama singing this song together.
😊
Go Ray, you've still got it!!
Love this song soooo much and plus my dance teacher is out there
Light at the end of the tunnel and two for a rally get this on a rink
Loved that! Saw it in my teens and later in my 30s. The stage looped out in the Denver theater but didn't have that in the Seattle theater. Still awesome!
For people who don't know the person playing poppa was actually the original rusty in London.
Actually, he played the first Rusty ever, in the 1984 production in Broadway. So we can say he is the OG Rusty
@@MeritxellFarrethat's what I was saying? Also it didn't open on Broadway till 1988 I think. Ray Shell was the OG rusty on the West end in 84.
That’s my Daddy!!!!
That is SO rad!
Lucky you .
Woo! He was Poppa when I finally managed to see the show, at about 15, and I remember clocking his voice halfway through act one, "wait a minute! IS THAT ORIGINAL RUSTY??"
He's amazing!
Your Daddy is awesome. I saw him in Starlight Express so many times. One time, Michael Jackson sat in front of us! It was one of my all time favourite musicals❤️
DAMN he can SING!!! Bravo!!!
I love Ray Shell's Poppa vocals-- it's a little lighter and less gravelly than most Poppa performers. This is 10 years ago though-- more recent RUclips videos of him aren't on point like this. His Rusty is timeless though.
He’s my dad! It was actually 22 years ago! And yes, his Rusty is flawless.
I love Ray Shell.
I had to sing this at school and everyone was clapping and cheering and saying how good this song is
I've loved this piece since I was a child.
It's a musical roller derby
My dream show !
I love this song!!!!❤❤❤😊
love this song
Thank's Mike Pollock for posting this on Twitter lmao

karima souabni where?
I sung this in school Had to go check it out TRAINS ARE COOL
Fabulous!!!
29 dislikes can't see the light at the end of the tunnel - so sad!
So do the actors know how to skate already or they learn just because of Starlight Express? I wish it comes back and I get to watch it.
They actually have to learn it, in the original london 1984 version most of the actors like greaseball actually didn't know how to skate, so he had to learn it painfully
Well on broadway they had an entire skating boot camp
Some actors know roller skating prior to being in the show, some don't.
Thanks Eggman
Im so proud of my nieces mel n jane amazing ladies we love u loads xx
yep
I was fortunate to see the original cast in London…twice! I’ve yet to see any other Rusty that could match Shell’s soulful voice. Sadly, in later years this wonderful story became more flash & tech. I think it distracted from the soul of the production, & ruined it for me. This version is the closest I’ve found to the original. Thanks for posting!

What the hell happened to the COSTUMES? :O
This was part of a concert celebrating Andrew Lloyd Webber's birthday. They performed a bunch of his pieces but none of them were in regular costumes. Everyone was in like black and white types of clothing so it all matched with each other.
Although Glenn Close did wear her original Norma Desmond costume for the Sunset Boulevard segment.
Who else got here by using mike Pollock's link
When is the revival for this show coming
Good news, it still plays in Germany! But for all of us not in Germany, guess we're still waiting
The lyrics should be "Thanks Heron for making that pot."
Not in the Original London Cast
Very funny 😐
The two girls standing in-between are cute
What, they just act artsy and sing about trains?
The characters are toy trains being played with by a child referred to as Control
what the hell
