I enjoy watching interviews with Aaron. Did you notice how he corrected the newscaster "He said Nigga...not the N word". That should give you a clue with whom you are dealing. Aaron stands behind and in front of his work and does not apologize. I understand the some people might get offended by the language of his shows or the way the point is right in your face. But thats his job as a satirist...right up there with Carlin and Pryor, just to name a few.
People seem to forget how many in his own time thought of Dr.King as a traitor because before his death in 68 he was campaigning heavily against American involvement in Vietnam. He was considered public enemy no 1 by the FBI. There’s no way this man would’ve been for American interventionism in the Middle East, even in the face of the horrors of 911. Y’all saw what they did to the Dixie chicks, and they were just some country singers who had won some Grammies. Anyone who stood out from American jingoism from 2001-2005 was perceived a threat.
I am enamoured with Aaron M. Such an intelligent (and hot) man. I don't always agree with every point made on the Boondocks but I have to commend him for trying to stimulate discourse. He's clearly someone who is engaged and not ashamed to employ his brain cells which is more than can be said for many. I really like the way he holds his ground in this interview. He doesn't cower yet keeps his sense of humour throughout. And the MLK episode is 1 of the funniest from series 1.
The fact he's black doesn't do much for me. What strikes me is how brilliant of a satirist he is. I think the series of The Boondocks is picking up where All In The Family left off and I personally would rank Mr. McGruder up there with the likes of Richard Pryor and George Carlin.
I think your right to a point, But they are asking the question for those who don't know and wanna understand what's this about, that their job asking questions that the masses wanna know or should know about, some times they know what's what and some times they are as clueless and wanna know also.
" We don`t use the n word, we say nigga! " Aaron is funny as hell and that episode was one of the best on The Boondocks because even though it was just comedy, some of the points MLK was talking about was the truth!
McGruder is an extremely smart, well-spoken man, it's no wonder the TV news will only air him on the late-late shows. The only rolemodels and tutors of color available to viewers during daytime TV are Al Roker and Lil' Wayne, which is a total travesty.
Only a small percentage of African Americans cherished the old ways of Hard Work... Respecting our Families... Respecting and teaching our children.... Respecting our Communities...Respecting Each Other.... Respectin Women and Having a MORAL COMPASS. I think Dr. King would probably say something like this in real life. It's a satire or social commentary on how far down we've gone in 40 some odd years. It's no-ones fault but our own. Can't blame McGruder for pointing that out.
1:23 🤣in your face honesty 3:02 you gotta hate media these days 5:16 true respect, unlike bullshit accolades from sycophants, Aaron's satire is great because he really holds credence to people like MLK Best interview he ever did, wish he would come back with some crazy Verve!
@N1N4 I soooo agree with you! I'm an African-American and I know excately what he's talking about. He was saying "IF you are a nigga you WOULD do this or that" Not saying all black people are niggas. For example, he said "Niggas don't do nothing until it almost too late" or something like that. I knew people who were like that. So you are right. They focused on him saying nigga instead of realizing he was giving a definition of a nigga in his speech. Peace!
. If you use the word "nigga" in everyday speech but know it doesn't degrade you because in the end words are just that, then I think you're fine. I mean in the end only you can ever truly define yourself, I mean constantly getting angry when someone who isn't black says "nigger" only shows the person that you allow yourself to be demeaned so easily. And They'll just say it again to piss you off, because they know how much it affects you. The Boondocks is kinda like a Black South park to me.
Absolutely!! I think especially with this episode, some people( ie: the woman interviewing Mcgruder) missed the point. In my opinion, he was trying to show us(the blk communt.)instead of moving forward with all of the hardwork that MLK and his organization sacrificed for us, we have gone backwards for the most part. And he is probaly rolling around in his grave(MLK) as we speak. Thats why I like Mcgruder. He does not sugar coat anything and that helps 2 make him a great satirist.
Anyone else think that Aaron's trying to make a point in this whole episode he was so called "pushing the envelope" here? Sort of like to open our eyes at what's really happening. Sure it's a cartoon, but that doesn't change the fact that the content on the Boondocks can also be seen in real life. I like him because he's not afraid to express his opinions even on live television while that reporter is trying to put him down. This guy's a great role model
That is what i meant Entropy. But it is all good. But anyways, i still love " The Boondocks " and Aaron is a real smart brotha. You can just tell from when he talks.
there's not a lot on the large scale of things. And sure everyone is entitled to their opinion. But action is what makes a difference. Which is clearly stated at the end of this episode.
Black people. We are our own worst enemies. That is what the message really was and still is and the comments on this board prove it. It actually saddens me a bit.
Damn. you hit the nail on the head. I hate how people like Oprah and Cosby stress how black people should stop using the word. And then people from other races for example white americans, want us to stop using it on the radio. All of them, Oprah, Cosby, white folks, want to say. oh that word hurts people I'm black and the last thing I want is to be offended by a word used to describe me. so I say "My nigga to my niggas!" Being offended by nigga only instills it's negative power.TAKEthePOWERaway
THANK YOU!! They missed the whole of the speech b/c of that word, it shows that they were never really listening at all, just like McGruder portrayed the news anchors within that particular episode.
I love the fact that he's speaking truth without apology and without fear of reprisal. You're right Turtleproof... Poverty is poverty and unfort there are far more people in this country experiencing extreme lack then popular culture would like us to believe. Most of us are not living the carefree life of Paris Hilton. This manufactured outrage is laughable. Who's offended by Boondocks?? Often we need to be offended so we say enough it enough and start brainstorming solutions.
for a lady who says that "he" is coming down hard on the black community she seems to be coming down hard on him when she doesn't seem to care about this black mans logic. cause honestly as black man we haven't progressed as much we could or should have. just cause there are some successful black people we are still fighting in ways to gain from what Dr. Martin Luther King already fought to progress
No way. Aaron doesnt care as much what people think like Dave did. He is too into what he says to worry about offending others. Like he says, it comes with the territory.
What you people need to realize is that Arron McGruder is your new Prophet! Listen to the man and pull yourselves up. What you need to understand is that without education you'll never be anything real. No amount of money can make up for being ignorant!
Yeah, she's critical all right. But that's the job of a journalist; to take everything that's said with a grain of salt, and to let the interviewee give their interpretation of a subject. At least they didn't turn off his mic and shout at him.
i know what arron is getting at i know bc i been reading his comics since i was 9 so i know how hard it is to hear the truth when others dont wanna hear but if that person not gunna tell who will its a wake up call for everyone in american not just blacks his show he made may go a lil over the top when it comes to dark tone for show but sometimes people need to hear the truth its like huey said the world is a cold and curl place
This guy is the man why must they always start some contraversial bullshyt on good shows, the Boondocks isn't an ignorant show you learn things on here.Look at family guy and south park they go in on celebrities and so on.The Boondocks does the same but at a different level.
I think it wasn't entirely his intention to put the "words" of the dead Martin Luther King Jr., but more to embody his ideals in a more modern context. I thought the episode was great.
I love Aaron and the show. I have to applaud the respectable debating thats going on here. My only problem was with Oprah being elected at the end of the show, and Aaron having that horrible excuse/reasoning for it! Oprah is the epitome of the de-cultured black community, and in a nutshell, all the Tom Dubois in America! If anyone is white, it's Oprah. The episode was truthful in some light, but that last part was just for comical relief, I hope to God I never see a day where Oprah run for pres!
Aaron MgGruder can't run for pres in 08...he will be 34 on Inaguration day in 2009. As we all know from government, you have to be 35 to run. I love this episode. MLK, Gandhi, Bayard Rustin and other peace activists would get marginalized in today's society.
not the case anymore.People nowadays are more open to equality and freedom that allows all races to exist together. There are still racists out there (and ur apparantly one of them)that will make moving on more difficult but we are still moving in the right direction. There is no one alive today whom we could blame for slavery, and you must learn to love everyone. I hope you bothered to read this and to use it to help open your mind and heart. :)

"Oh yeah! (laughs) Absolutely. Yep."
This is awesome, and so true.
Honestly, this guy is brave. Respect!!!
"Actually, We had him say NIGGA We don't use the" N-word "on my show"
lol

Got a laugh out of me
"I said Nigga...We dont use the N word on The Boondocks" lol....
Aaron McGruder is a extremely intelligent individual
nuff said
Best black comedy since The Chappelle Show.
Love him and the episode was genius and right on point! Learn blk ppl!

This guy, Aaron McGruder, is smart. I am very impressed and wow, I am suprised but I find myself agreeing with the guy.
"We carry the blame of our own apathy and inactivity"
I am enamoured with Aaron M. Such an intelligent (and hot) man. I don't always agree with every point made on the Boondocks but I have to commend him for trying to stimulate discourse. "Actually we had him say Nigga" love it

Why don't news presenters ever get satire? It's really not a difficult concept.
I think your right to a point, But they are asking the question for those who don't know and wanna understand what's this about, that their job asking questions that the masses wanna know or should know about, some times they know what's what and some times they are as clueless and wanna know also.

your desciption is perfect. this is my fav episode of boondocks. im glad i got the 1st season
that's funny because someone actually tried to nominate oprah in 2008
McGruder is an extremely smart, well-spoken man, it's no wonder the TV news will only air him on the late-late shows. The only rolemodels and tutors of color available to viewers during daytime TV are Al Roker and Lil' Wayne, which is a total travesty.
i love this show. i have all the eps. on dvd
"Dr. King wouldn't talk fast enough to be on TV nowadays" lol!!!!
McGruder still got some jokes.
He does look like Huey grown up! That's what I thought while watching it. Judging by the way he talks Huey is probably based on him as well.
I'm really starting to believe that Huey is the vehicle for his ideas. It's pretty awesome if you ask me.
1:23 🤣in your face honesty
3:02 you gotta hate media these days
5:16 true respect, unlike bullshit accolades from sycophants, Aaron's satire is great because he really holds credence to people like MLK
Best interview he ever did, wish he would come back with some crazy Verve!
Neeyguh
Aaron is awesome and he tells the truth the best way to reach young African Americans.
@N1N4 I soooo agree with you! I'm an African-American and I know excately what he's talking about. He was saying "IF you are a nigga you WOULD do this or that" Not saying all black people are niggas. My thoughts exactly

Hands up for Aaron!!
God Bless Aaron McGruder. The world needs more people like him.

Im so glad he mentioned John Henrik Clarke...that was a memorable & thought provoking quote about MLK.
I like how abc does not show the rest of the clip. He realy says it all about how we african americans have become as a whole in america.
I like Aaron, he's a very intelligent being who has ideals that are definitely worth listening to.
That is what i meant Entropy. But it is all good. But anyways, i still love " The Boondocks " and Aaron is a real smart brotha. You can just tell from when he talks.

if u look at the show carefully its showing a mirror to ourselfs.. uncle ruffus is 2 faced which is why his face looks like that... i love the show
Agreed I think they have succeeded in making Aaron's point....he appreciates it.
THANK YOU!! They missed the whole of the speech b/c of that word, it shows that they were never really listening at all, just like McGruder portrayed the news anchors within that particular episode.
Finally a young, HIGHLY EDUCATED Black man is getting the chance to introduce America to the real side of Blackness
because black people are creative and they dont wanna give us any power just like afro samurai took our show and more shows hopefully
I love the fact that he's speaking truth without apology and without fear of reprisal. You're right Turtleproof... HELL no Aaron is some kinda hard-ass and I bet he'll keep moving on no matter who he offends
No way. Aaron doesnt care as much what people think like Dave did. He is too into what he says to worry about offending others. Like he says, it comes with the territory.

i frickin LOVE aaron mcgruder
I 100% percent agree with Mr. McGruder about what he says about Dr. King
This man is a fucking genius
He is working on one now. Yessss
This guy is the man why must they always start some contraversial bullshyt on good shows, the Boondocks isn't an ignorant show you learn things on here.Look at family guy and south park they go in on celebrities and so on.The Boondocks does the same but at a different level.

no it's regina king she does both riley and huey
bravo bravo, aaron mcgruder knows his stuff. Season 3 is coming up, yeehaa!!
Aaron's the MAN and the boondocks is hilarious
Aaron MgGruder can't run for pres in 08...he will be 34 on Inaguration day in 2009. As we all know from government, you have to be 35 to run.

His voice reminds of Barack
I agree with you, PryorRip, but let's be real here--EVERYTHING 'Dr.King' said in th episode was the truth, not just some of it. And, more importantly, 'Dr.King's' speech needed to be said, no matter the medium.
I love aaron mcgruder
Hmmm, wonder why this is being recommended on my timeline | November 2, 2020.
It's 2020, the algorithm put this in my suggestions. The future is a scary place and there's no Oprah in sight.
but it's regina king watch the credits after the show is over she does both the voices
best show on earth
DID U NOTICE HOW OL GIRL AT THE END OF THE INTERVIEW FINISHED IT OFF WITH A NEGATIVE COMMENT..."A CONTROVERSIAL CARTOONIST FINDS A CONTROVERSIAL WAY TO HONOR M.L.K.JR".(THEY ALWAYS DO THAT S%#T TO BLACK PEOPLE WHO TELLS IT LIKE IT IS)
yup keep it 100.
@soulpimp Yeaah he does but I mean literally like his inflection and the halting way he speaks.
Man he handled that well
i dont see why blackman in the black community found it offensive...if anything it put things in perspective.what if martin luther king jr woke up and saw his black people demeaning themselves by being in gangs, creating a form of music that does nothing but exploits women terribly and the awful greed of money?it certainly made me think, and for that i give props to Aaron for that.
Lool alucti we made him say nigga.
I love that show. It's hilarious and, in some ways, very educational. Fight scenes are badass too!
Yes and there IS a difference, right!
DID U NOTICE HOW OL GIRL AT THE END OF THE INTERVIEW, HAD TO HAVE THE LAST WORDS AND FINISHED IT OFF WITH A NEGATIVE COMMENT..."A CONTROVERSIAL CARTOONIST FINDS A CONTROVERSIAL WAY TO HONOR M.L.K.JR".(THEY ALWAYS DO THAT S%#T TO BLACK PEOPLE WHO TELLS IT LIKE IT IS)
she attacks him... dats not fair!
McGruder is fine as hell.. And he has the same view that i have on black people
Shut up
man he told her
gosh lets stop talking about how the show is offensive and make some more boonocks , black people need to watch this show that reflect our sad and lame reality ..blacks used to get killed for going to school, i think we need to step up our game..Aaron you need to make more of boondocks for the sake of our people man
@fecoupefe I disagree. It's satire. The Boondocks started out as a comic strip and still runs in newspapers to this very day. I think it needs to be aired because it's a cautionary series. It shows the world how low we have sunk in our morals and mores our attitudes towards ourselves and others. Let's face it .. our problems as a group can no longer be blamed on others. We have to be responsible parents, citizens and people. Not McGruders fault that he's highlighting our shortcomings.
genius. pure genius.
*Le sigh* So hot and intelligent. I cannot choose between him and Seth MacFarlane for hottest animator (RIP Boondocks strip *sniff*). Hell, I'll take *both* please.
And Cynthia McFadden is *so* not an it-getter.
@pallfy20 This interview was from 2006.
@BongMonstar exactly i wish he did more interviews.
South park and boondocks the best. Comedy with a deep message behind it.
I'm not sure what you're getting at.
My point is as clear as day--Many negative stereotypes of blacks throughout history have involved money to some extent. As someone who 'grew up in the south,' it is expected that you would be more aware of this than someone who didn't grow up in that region.
tell that birch to shut up
boondocka ALL DAY!!!
season 3...FINAL SEASON!! MAY 2ND GET READY!!!!!
@lasoogneypubes Wrong!
Best AMERICAN comedy EVER.
Aaron Mcgruder is the greatest satirist since Thomas Nast. I am on the opposite spectrum of a lot of his political beliefs, but I hope to God Almighty that this man can save the country from itself.
He is probably one of the few people that see the essential problems and soullessness of our society.
