Makeover: Traditional Home Gets A Bright Modern Update

- For Rhiannon Hageman's first design project, what started as a kitchen renovation snowballed into a first-floor revamp that swept away stuffy elements. Adding more windows and painting the frames black (and skipping the drapes), refinishing the dark floors, swapping a heavy stone chimney breast for porcelain, and new boho pendants freshen up a home so it feels modern.

She did a fantastic job and the home looks great. I’m glad the old kitchen was donated, but it’s hard to believe anyone felt it needed a full gut job.
Agree. Seemed changes could have been made to update the look (counters, hardware, etc) without removing the cabinetry. Becomes conspicuous consumption.

The old kitchen was so cold a sterile. This is so much more warm and inviting. If you really analyze them, everything about it is so much better.

Ya i mean is it so bad to say reuse? She “repurposed” the dining set but it’s still a dining set so it still serves the same purpose

It looks nice but ... The dinning table is tiny, the loyout is questionable, kitchen island is not wide enough for four stools etc.

Same here all the other spaces turned off nicely but the kitchen before is my preference
What I love about this project is that the design is simple and rather minimal without being sterile. A lot of designers use so many space fillers when styling the home.

This is a gorgeous home, absolutely light and bright! All the light fixtures are beautiful, but the kitchen pendants are stunning. My favorite room is the powder room, though. It is pure glam!!

Lovely job! Black as an accent is and has always been a favorite of mine. I do question a living or diningroom without some kind of window covering, however. Might look lovely during the day, but at night it becomes cold and stark with black glass and nothing but reflection. No need for heavy drapes, sheer fabric would cut the coldness of that reflection.
As a first project she has done a magnificent job!!! IT's modern yet everything is well thought and balanced with textures and different finishes.

Beautiful renovation. I like the combination of gold cabinet pulls and black faucets with the modern cabinets and touch of white oak. Adding windows with black framing makes a great statement. It is a bright and peaceful space.
It's a much improved design. A definite refresh and I have mad respect that they donated the cabinets. I like almost everything, except maybe too much white, especially going with all white are rugs- kind of boring.

While I prefer colour as a vibrant personality type, I do appreciate those overhead lights above the kitchen island. The home is an obvious upgrade to what it previously was.
